What's the best laptop I can buy for $800 right now?

I'm getting kicked out of the house tomorrow and I need a new laptop for the apartment because the one I have is 12 years old and really slow now.

I'm going to use GIMP/Photoshop, Sony Vegas Pro, and regular web browsing a lot.

How did you keep your laptop working for 10 years?

Every laptop I have ever had since 1996 shits out 5 years nearly to the day. Usually processor overheating, despite internal cleaning.
