Is using WebView to create mobile apps a bad idea?

I'm talking about hybrid applications which are written in HTML, CSS and JS and work on both iOS and Android with access to hardware such a g-scope and camera etc. Basically a mobile website wrapped inside an app.

I hate working with huge, clunky environments such as Eclipse. Being able to create apps with simple text editors would make things a lot more comfy.

Of course, its noticably slower than native applications, but.. it still works :^)
Thoughts?

It's fine, Cordova has plugins for basically everything.

Just don't write your app in javascript, use a decent language that compiles to JS like Typescript, Kotlin, Scala or Clojure.

In the current year you should pick Xamarin or React Naive before Cordova. It won't annoy the user with a thousand small uncanny valley differences from native and performs better. It is not significantly slower to develop. It works consistently on older Android.

Thanks for the bumb stranger.

-But... but, I love javascript :( it is so easy.

Both of these require clunky shit like Eclipse

You can still use JavaScript for everything in Cordova.

Also, looks for Ionic, its a Cordova frameworks with Angular

The tradeoff is a huge clunky app

Great for prototyping though

I worked on some app written in JS with SenchaTouch 1 as the framework that would provide the "native like" behaviour.

It was a limited (you cant a few things in JS) and buggy piece of shit. Probably due to the technology being crap and the developers (including myself) being incompetent. Also ExtJS (which SenchaTouch is built over) is aweful.

Well yeah, but don't forget the advantages:
-easily provide server side updates
-quick development
-no android emulator required for testing/debugging, no mac required for iOS apps
-all platforms are compatible, even blackberry os
-web devs can use their existing skills for app development without getting into java and the android sdk etc. (me)

WebView may be clunky, but using some fancy js and css animations one atleast can make it feel a bit more fluid and native.
