However, 8 is good enough if you're already on it. You can fuck it into shape enough to not need 7. But if you're already on 10 and want to save yourself, there's no reason to not go 7.

If you use any kind of registry edit or third party tool to disable the Wintrash 10 botnet, the automatic updates just enable it again. If you shut the updates off, you're vulnerable to malware like WannaCry that will lock your computer. It's not like the spying would be new to you, since it has been backported to Windows 7 and 8 through updates, and you have it if you've updated in the last two years.
