this wanacry shit got me scared

I don't care it can be patched, there will be more vulnerabilities in the future. yeah linux has vulns too but they never bother making virus for linux because it isn't worth it.

what's a good distro, or should I just go ubuntu?

Don't let the Arch memes get you, Ubuntu is more or less as close as you can get to Linux without having to do anything.

I say get it, run it as a live distro and try it out for a few minutes. If you can handle it consider installing it.

In a couple months to a year, THEN consider looking at Arch and other things.

What's important is that you get comfortable with it first instead of being thrown head-first into the Arch wiki. It's informative, even for beginners, but it isn't helpful for someone who's just curious.

Ubuntu MATE because its Ubuntu with a sane DE

Gentoo GNU/Linux.

Wannacry is just a meme made up by /g/ to hide how vulnerable Linux is and laugh at winbabies. Don't take the bait.
>>
>>60465682
Different Anon but is there a reason you're recommending Mate over XFCE?

>WannaCry
As a sysadmin in charge of company backups, this was just one of many nails in the coffin for a few of our clients. Our sales guys weren't very pushy, and the clients rejected our proposals numerous times. Meanwhile, I'm just sitting here in my ivory tower laughing my big fat ass off. Anyone who got WannaCry and didn't have backups was literally asking for it.

this.

nice try satan. he's asking for an out-of-the-box wintoddler option, not muh bleeding edge packages.

>>60465770
It's not nearly as serious as everyone is making it out to be, but it's certainly not a meme. There were several hospitals that had to postpone hundreds of surgeries on day 0 because they couldn't readily access patient records.

Slackware was more helpful to understand Linux as a system, than Gentoo.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>60465814
Also a different anon. Mate has more of a Windows feel for me without being Windows. It's solid as fuck and will literally walk beginners through how to use it. I run it on an older system and can't tell any difference in speed compared to xfce.
>>
>>60466013
Quit the fucking bullshit. You know it's true. Nine times out of ten, if you throw Arch at a non-linux user, you'll frustrate the hell out of them. And what does that get us? Another anon saying "LINUX IS SHIT!DONT INSTALL!". People are afraid of leaving windows an unfortunately they sometimes need to be eased into a new OS.

Yes. Autists will try to convince you otherwise, but there is very very very little you cant do in ubuntu that you can do elsewhere.
>>
Ubuntu is great. Debian is nice too if you want to work and be productive. Just apt install anything you need and get on with it. Software might be a little outdated but seriously, it works wonders. Up-to-date software is a meme, everything just gets progressively worse with updates.

The only two distributions I'd seriously consider instead of Debian are Slackware and Gentoo but stay away from those, they are a pain to install and run.

I'm not disagreeing with you m9. Throw someone inexperienced into anything and they'll say they don't know what they're doing.
My point is that OP wasn't asking for an escalation path or some way to deep dive into Linux, he was asking for an oob fix to his Windows/WannaCry paranoia.

Easing into Ubuntu MATE is a cakewalk, any drooling retard could figure it out. OP doesn't need to then proceed to harder distros just because they exist.

It's important to explore other distros, other DEs and other software to find out what you like.

The only reason I said "arch in a few months" is because everyone would've gotten butt-finger-blasted otherwise.

My distro of choice is bunsenlabs which is basically debain anyway.

Ubuntu is a good choice, but depending on how used to windows you are you might just want to use mint instead.

Personally I didn't like mint because of how much it reminds me of windows. But for a babies first Linux you may like the windows feel, plus they are both based on Debian so if you later decide to try Ubuntu most of what you learned on mint will carry over.

Mate tweak will let you change the theme, Redmond theme will feel like windows, Cupertino will give you a Mac feel with a dock, and there is one that looks like Ubuntu proper but I forget the name right now.

redmond theme. mutiny looks like ubuntu proper.

mate tweak is under system, preferences, look and feel, then click on panel.

You fell for the MATE meme. It's the best DE out there but it requires a bit of tweaking. You should have just went with GNOME or KDE for out-of-the-box usability.
