How can H.265/HEVC even DREAM of competing against this? Practically all the main players in the tech industry are backing AV1, save for Apple and Facebook.

Me encoding 1080p with default AV1 settings back in April of this year. 50 frames in and I was encoding 1.5 frames per minute and ended up just quitting.
AV1 has a ways to go.

AV1 will be a codec mostly used for streaming though and it's main purpose is to serve low bitstream quality videos at the smallest size.
UHD BDs will keep using HEVC since the japs are backing it and it's purpose isn't just streaming the most horrendous quality like netflix wants, though H264 is still superior at higher presets at least for now.
