How much longer will 8gb suffice?
I'm concerned about buying a laptop with 8gb of ram (not upgradable). I'd like to get 5yrs good years out of it. I'm wondering how 8gb will do in 2 or 3yrs. It's certainly fine for me, currently. I seldom go over 4gb.

It's a key factor in me wanting the XPS 15 over the XPS 13.

What kind of shit laptop are you getting that has 8 GB of non-upgradeable RAM? Anything halfway decent has two slots.

I'm firm on the idea that 4GB is the bare minimum in 2017 if you want to use the internet comfortably.

Maybe I should max out my laptop
's DDR3 slots before it gets discontinued.

Yes, the time to upgrade your old shit with DDR3 was actually last year before the prices went insane.
>>
The question is wtf are you going to use it for?

I still have a 512mb RAM desktop that we use around here exclusively for printing jobs since we use a shitty old printer without networking capabilities.

On a laptop you probably won't be able to do much on it that would require 12/16 GB.

And so that's where you're wrong kiddo.

When was 8GB of DDR3 not $50?

That's how much I paid for it 2 years ago, it's still at that price.

I can easily tell you, most of the time, I'll be using well under 8gb currently. My question is really, how much is ram usage going to increase in non-professional software, over the next 3-5yrs.

I'm sure, 8gb will do me fine for the next 3yrs, but I don't want to buy a new computer in 3yrs. I expect ~5.

It seems, ram has been kind of stagnant for a while.

Me too.
For me, 5,5 GB are in use right now on Win8.1, another 9GB are used by cache. Windows 10 have a zRAM feature, that may help. I think 8GB are fine for the next 3 years, 5 - not so sure, but again, a T420 on Win10 with just 4GB works as fast as that one with 16GB. If you're not a heavy user who keep his browser open 24/7 for weeks, you'll be fine.

What's your ram usage like?
This is like 15 chrome tabs open.
