>out for over a year
>no price drop in sight

This is what will kill VR. Devs pouring money into the tech and nobody being able to afford it.

A small price drop will not determine what kills/saves VR.

People buy 1080s. VR being shit is what kills VR.

This.
Why play in VR when the games you want to play are just fine on a regular screen and don't require 2 housefires to play games?

Even if it became dirt cheap it would never replace regular gaymes or become commonplace

Every person I know that owns one say they love it but rarely ever use it for more than a few hours every week because its just exhausting to use and all the game devs know this so they make the games for it made to be played in short bursts for health concerns

For VR to take off it will have to do several things
1. Become affordable
2. Become more comfortable to use so you can play longer
3. Because less cumbersome and bulky. The weight and size of the headsets is the main reason they are uncomfortable
(Optional) 4. Some amazing new tech or some shit allows you to have VR without having to have a really high end computer

Unless atleast 2-3 of those conditions are met, VR will just be a shortlived fad

I own one, It's a lot of fun and I definitely got my money's worth of time out of it but shit has a lot of problems before it catches on.

>Resolution feels like ass sometimes
>Needs a 1070 at minimum (it feels barely passable with a 1070, fuck rx 480)
>costs a lot
>needs a lot of room
>most locomotion methods kind of suck
>little to no AAA media
>gets hot as fuck (though the rift is better for this)
>Wires are a pain

I do think VR is here to stay though, probably just won't really kick off until 2020-ish and definitely won't replace regular games.
>>
VR Gen 2 will be a much better indicator as to where the technology is heading.
>>
>>60423132
You are retarded. I've been playing Battlefield 1942 and BF Vietnam in VR. They are unbelievably awesome. It's almost like a whole different game. And you don't need a retardedly overpowered PC either. I've also played some other classics in VR like Far Cry or Jedi Outcast or Turok etc. They are fun games on their own, but in VR you get to experience them in a totally different way.

Today's VR specific games / exclusive titles are shit tier in comparison.

Also don't forget VR porn. I haven't jerked to anything else in years maybe.
>>
>>60423278
Apart from the headset being the cheap Chink "Put your phone in" kind of deal. I'm not trashing Nolo though, I'll be using the marker with a PSVR headset for goodtimes.
>>
IMHO my rift is just gathering dust, in part because I have no time but also because it requires effort to get situated. I'd say it is like how pc gamers are a niche of the gaming market so vr gaming is that much more so. Also, roomscale vr is stupid, you need an omni as if entry costs weren't enough as is. So even a 2 grand pc plus $800 headset is not quite enough you need a $1200 omni and that market looks still quite buggy to me

That said it won't ever die it will just stay niche
>>
Swap the occulus controllers form factor with the vive ones but keep the vive headset and basestation, reduce it all to £599 and give it a 4k screen and i will buy one.

Im absolutely not paying £750 for the vive when it basically has one game worth playing which is elite atm, fallout 4 vr is meant to be coming this year too, which isnt enough either.

Id literally just use it to watch vr porn, which is sad.

The occulus with its closed store, camera motion sensing bullshit and facebook can fuck off, aint buying it.
>>
Might be worth it for porn or watching movies while blazed, assuming that's possible?

Like can I pick up a VR headset and have it function as a normal monitor that I just wear on my head without all the gimmicky motion tracking bullshit?

If I were to plug it into my jewbuntu workstation would it show the desktop on the VR display, just as static full-FOV render I mean not full-360 tracking, because that alone sounds pretty dope.

SteamVR is available on linux at the moment, haven't tried it myself. Doubt there are any games supported yet.
For the time being to keep running linux as host OS and avoid dual booting I just run windows inside a VM and pass the dedicated GPU to it. Worked better then I expected even on demanding titles like arizona sunshine and raw data.
>>
VR has a lot of problems they haven't figured out yet. Especially movement. Point and teleport is retarded. Using analog stick movement apparently causes 1 in 10 people to turn into giant pussies. 360 degree treadmills are expensive as fuck and impractical for most users.
>>
>>60427302
you need special programs to output to the headset.

you would be better off with a non-VR HMD or something like the PiMax 4K.

you should wait a few years so the tech can mature, right now it is heavy and bulky and takes too long to set up.
>>
>>60427458
Honestly, I think eventually devs are just going to say fuck it and use standard analog movement and it'll be up to nausea-prone users to deal with it if they want to play. Once console-based VR becomes more common place you'll have a generation of gamers growing up on it and nausea won't be a problem.
>>
If they made VR kits affordable for people with 1000$ PCs it would probably kill virtual reality. Imagine all these people with mediocre PCs who get disappointed that these things run like shit with their specs.
>>
>>60423899
different anon,
>I've been playing Battlefield 1942 and BF Vietnam in VR
VorpX? been there done that.
I really hate using my head as aiming reticule and keyboard+mouse sucks in VR, defeats the whole purpose. I thought I'd be happy enough with HMD for sims only seated, but when I tried roomscale it was a fucking amazing experience when done right.
>Today's VR specific games / exclusive titles are shit tier in comparison
Combination of low budget and no quality control. I did enjoy what some had to offer but they were very short lived.
>Also don't forget VR porn. I haven't jerked to anything else in years maybe.
I found photorealistic porn using SBS to be shit. It's just a 2D video wrapped around an object the illusion is easily broken similar to 3D TVs except instead of looking at the edge all you have to do is move and the illusion is broekn. Hell it doesn't help that even after my best efforts of trying to make the image 1:1 it doesn't scale properly and looks like shit. Too many filmers think closeups are the best thing since sliced bread but it looks fucking awful.
The only good porn so far is rendered footage or games since they properly convey depth. Only Japanese games out there for now until a better method of making VR videos is adopted.

>foveated rendering will make VR games less demanding than non-VR
Only at extremely high resolutions, Can't give any exact figures because it can vary depending on level of other future optimizations specifically tailored for VR in software and hardware.
There is a region where the performance between foveated rendering and a monitor of equivalent resolution would overlap any lower and monitor would perform better, any higher and the VR HMD performs better.
What you have to be asking yourself though is how high a resolution do you expect monitors to achieve? 8K is overkill for a 27"~28" monitor which is a size many aren't while to go above, I can't even see the pixels at a typical viewing distance at 4K resolution.

On the positive side, in the future you'd be able to achieve far higher FOV with a VR HMD for cheaper with a lower performance penalty for equivalent pixels per degree to a monitor. They just need to work on making it more lightweight, wireless and compact. Already halfway there on PC with Vive's TP link wireless adapter.
End game for HMDs without tampering with the brain directly would likely be an all in one HMD with flawless NLOS body tracking, a lightfield display, eye tracking+foveated rendering, and FoV that encompasses your entire vision at retina ppd with no noticeable issues with the optics (be it display or lens related) whatsoever. Biggest barrier is the fucking hardware that will be driving it all even with foveated rendering Lightfield displays are far more demanding beast for now until effective optimization techniques are realized both on the hardware and software level.

seems like the markers would work pretty well with other HMDs. Never saw that before but I'm kinda interested to get it for my pimax

>CPU: i7 4790 (non k)
>Guest dedicated GPU: GTX980
>host OS GPU: HD4600 integrated GPU
>Motherboard: Asus H97M-E
>PCIE USB Controller: Innateck 5 port USB3.0 controller
You can pass the GPU back to host without restarting if you need it on linux, but you have to log out/login, hopefully wayland adds support for GPU hotswapping soon.

The PCIE usb is needed for the HTC vive because there is a 4USB device limit in QEMU currently, by passing a USB controller through you bypass this limitation and can hotplug any USB devices physically as you would bare metal on your host OS. Saves a lot of hassle.

VR won't take off until AAA studios start porting their games over to VR in some meaningful way.

And that's exactly why VR isn't taking off.

forgot to add, Vive has more than 4 USB devices despite occupying a single USB port. Think it was around 8~10 devices.

For porn I just watch standard 2D POV scenes in VaR's VR Video Player on Android. Basically it shows the same thing for both eyes. You also have to zoom in so that the sides of 16:9 video is cut off and you only see the middle part. But it's fucking great and there is literally endless material out there, compared to VR porn, which for the most part sucks. Also 2D POV porn in VR has better resolution. Only downside is that you don't have depth in the scenes.
>>
>>60428199
It is a catch 22 situation unfortunately, AAA studios will not invest heavily in VR unless there is a large enough target audience. The gap can be closed with lower cost hardware.
Not a good time to buy into VR until then, it is a niche market for now. For the smaller players there is a sea of garbage but eventually some titles will stand out and promote more sales. Someone will have to take the fall to make it marketable.
Valve is working on three titles, the Lab had good polish and was one of the more entertaining experiences out there so they haven't completely lost their touch.
>>
>>60428459
They should release Half Life 3 as a VR exclusive title or some shit. They'd sell a million devices in hours.
>>
>>60428492
And cop a lot of shit for it from fans, no I'd prefer they release an offshoot of it to minimize the butthurt of those who can't afford a VR HMD.
>>
I'm looking to make a VR game but its hard to figure out what people actually want at the moment. Plus you've gotta invest a lot in good assets otherwise it looks shit.
>>
>>60428642
I wouldn't have a clue what the majority would want but I would love to see a combined arms game in VR even if the art style is not realistic as long as it looks aesthetically pleasing with nice sound effects and satisfying weapon manipulation.
Something that allows you to crew emplacements like mortars/AT guns/Heavy MGs and vehicles, with good attention to detail when it comes to reloading or manually traversing a turret with a crank for vertical and horizontal.

Hell I'd settle for a COOP mech/tank/airship game were you play as a crewmember not just fullfilling all roles easily at twitch reflexes with mouse and keyboard. Doesn't have to be realistic, but have some semblance of reality and above all be a satisfying experience.
>>
>>60422874
VR is already dead.
>>
>>60422874
I do believe VR is the future of gaming, it's just that the future hasn't fully arrived yet.

It's not just the price, but the whole system required to run VR decently that is currently holding it back.
