A Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk. Although the seconds display and power reserve aren't digital, the hours and minutes are.

The FP Journe Vagabondage III has digital seconds, but the minutes are analog.

Disregarding the Lange Zeitwerk, I believe the cheapest non-chinkcrap digital display watch in say, the past decade was an orient.
It's long gone now, but it was cheap and had a dependable orient movement.

Anybody know of watches featuring an 8-hour clock face? Alternatively, although might be ugly as sin, 12-or 24-hour face divided into 3 sections via edges, that is, triangular symmetry?
>>
>>60393304
like making custom watches? some delusional idiots attempted it once or twice, but we're a very small community, mostly poor, and wouldn't ever be able to come to a consensus. That, and all those custom watches end up sucking ass, because design by committee doesn't work.
>>
>>60393033
This. What fucking morons.

>>
>>60393118
Search Orient Jump Hour. I forget the exact reference. They made a few of them over the years and since I've not seen one for a while I think they've been discontinued. Seriously Orient is fucking retarded; ever since they were bought out fully by seiko it's been a never ending reshuffle of shitty designs. I think even their highest line, Royal Orient, is gone too. They peaked in design with their orient stars about 7 years ago.

Anyway, this jump hour doesn't exactly look like the zeitwerk or that gruen posted above; it has digits instead of hands, but it's not an old timey flip board type clock radio style.

Once on the subway as a wee lad I'd seen a 12-hour rounded triangular face on a triangular body, ugly as sin, didn't catch brand.
Anyways googling doesn't bring up anything relevant.
Modding a clock face would be simpler figuring out how the mechanics to an single arrow spinning trice daily.

If I were you (then you'd be me! lel suck shit faggot have fun with my loser existence lmao) I would get the blue.

Why: the grey, imo doesn't provide enough legibility. Sure the indices and hands are polished etc., but it's such a dull color that's just another shade of the silver, really. It's not black, so the silver colored hands don't really pop, but it's not like the blue or even the grape either. A true null. The blue is vibrant and interesting. The grey is boring and sucks old penis in backalleys. But hey, it's your money. You have the option of just saving onwards and getting something better that you may want in a few months.

Zenith: I won't say that all their watches are horrible, as they should be approached by a case by case basis.

But the fact that Zenith is owned totally by LVMH, that shitshow that ruins brands by diluting design philosophy, cutting corners to cut costs and in doing so totally destroying the brand's image for the sake of a few extra cents to feed the shareholders, I find it very hard to recommend the brand as a whole. Look at some of the shit they've been pumping out. Fucking heinous. Good on Hermes for resisting LVMH's bullshit takeover strategies (and calling them out; hilarious corporate bitchfight) for so long. They'd totally tarnish that brand; horribly overpriced as it is, it's stuff is actually good, which is more than can be said for LVMH's slave companies which are both expensive (albeit not as much as Hermes) and crap (compared to what they used to be).

LVMH is the very last mass-luxury goods conglomerate I would ever even think about buying a watch from, or anything else for that matter:
Richemont>Swatch>Kering>LVMH. I'd prefer an independent, but a good independent is a rarity post-quartz crisis (Rolex and Patek notwithstanding), and since JLC, VC, and Lange are all Richemont owned, it makes the decision a hard one.

Also, service is also a shitshow, which is pretty much what can be expected from the likes of having a central Richemont or LVMH service centre. I wonder which one is worse? Heard horrific things about both.

Resale value sucks ass too if that's a worry for you, and that's understandable too considering all the stuff I've mentioned above. There's no trust in LVMH's goods amongst most collectors.

So I was thinking yesterday and I l realized that smart-watches and caios are in fact the biggest "tool watches" these days. Yes Rolex used to be tool watches, when we didn't have better technology, but point me to any modern diver who uses Rolex as a "tool". Rolexes are at most luxury watches with a tool like aesthetic and heritage. Now cheap casios like dw-5600 are best suited for any tool application, while smart-watches while lacking robustness are the best tool watches for the everyday - that is emails, messages and shit like that.
This is not bait, by the way. Personally I enjoy watches as art pieces or jewelry, with superfluous over-engineered obsolete technology. As that guy said: "you have to be a little autistic"

Main problem is the need to recharge daily unless it is a low resolution job with barely readable face.
However they are improving and if they could moderate the resource requirements (1 GHz CPU for a watch!?) battery lifetime would improve and make it usable.

By the time the 3000 series calibres came out, a time only watch like the airking already had sapphire instead of acrylic. Why are you so hung up on the 3000 series?

If you just want a simple, acrylic, time only rolex airking or whatever then get one; it'll have the movement it has. It won't be a 3000 series, but it'll still tell the time.

I'd worry about getting it repaired at an official RSC going forward though, as they're starting to refuse watches that are like 30 years old depending on which region, and even which RSC, you ask at. Independents, that have the spare parts, are fine, but how long are they going to be around? How long until finding a competent watchmaker with the know how (and parts) becomes so hard that you have to start mailing shit interstate or overseas? This alone turns me off getting say a 5513 over a 14060. It's this uncertainty that puts me off picking up rolex watches that are over 20 years old.

You can older get day-fucking-dates for like 10k now! But I just don't trust it. Rolex is not Patek, VC, JLC or even Zenith; they don't give a shit about their vintage models and just want you to buy the new stuff. So many horror stories of morons taking their redlines to the RSC and getting back new dials and hands.

With the others (apparently Omega now too) you can send in any model they've ever made and they will fix it, up to and including machining singular custom parts for just that watch if need be. Sure, you'll pay through the fucking nose for it and be waiting the better part of a year, or more, but that's "haute horologie" for you.

Rolex doesn't aspire to that. Buy their shit, enjoy it during your lifetime. Your kids and grand kids can fend for themselves when the time comes. Perhaps I paint too bleak a future, and there'll always be some independent watchmaker somewhere ready to capitalise on rolex's unwillingness to deal with vintage models properly. I doubt it. But, 3d printing's a fucking thing so you never know.

I really don't know what to feel about the new dials. It's finally addressed the whole multi-font shitfest, and they're trying to address the whole branding issue that's apparently such a thing in the west. But they feel off somehow, and it's not just the ugly font they now use for the supplementary text; shit, what were they thinking? That at least could've remained the same.
>>

I know that this multi-year calendar shit was a really popular design back in the day, at least on orients. Looks like orient tristar quality (like seiko 5's, marketed to the 3rd world market). If you like it, buy it. The one in the pic looks brand new. I think orient made these up until relatively recently (past 10-15 years).

I'd be more concerned with parts availability for older Rolex models than with finding a competent independent servicer, but perhaps I'm biased by living in Southern Ontario and having at least three watchmakers I'd trust to do a Rolex within driving distance of me.

Do you happen to know what the oldest movements are that Rolex still makes parts for? In any case, I assume something 313x powered would be safe from a lack of parts for quite some time.

>Do you happen to know what the oldest movements are that Rolex still makes parts for?
I'd assume they'd only still make parts for movements that are still in production. The cal.31XX.

If you get anything with a 31XX, you should be alright for a fair while. They made more and more of this shit as the years went by and there's, at the moment, no shortage of spares (the current sub's still using the 3130/3135, but with parachom and paraflex and there's likely still a mountain of bezels and dials and other crap that fits).

If you're really worried about longevity (I am) I'd avoid anything below 31XX. 31XX is still current. The 3000's in the later 5513 subs probably still have movement parts available, but it's dials and hands and who knows what else that are the issue.
>>
>>60406717
I don't know for how long they kept the machines spitting out parts for say, the cal.15XX's when they were replaced with the cal.3XXX we have today. I don't know what Rolex's policy was in the late 70's concerning future spare parts was. What's the official spiel today? Guarantee of 20 years after whatever it is has been discontinued? About a decade ago they'd reached the point where collectors were grumbling about the service of older, 15XX models and that it was verging on a case by case basis, so this 20 year thing probably isn't a new policy. They likely had a mountain of spare parts (not just for the movements) of which they they're now truly to running out.

I don't know on a movement by movement basis what parts are interchangeable between generations (15XX to 3XXX etc.). I mean, this stuff doesn't change so drastically, so there should be parts that can be retrofitted if need be (screws or whatever, maybe a generic gear that never changes). It's the stuff apart from the movement that are in trouble.

Within the 3XXX series too, I don't know how drastic the changes are. The new red sea dweller uses a cal.3235 that I believe is the same size as the 3135, and if they decide to update the sub they'd definitely use the 3235. How different the architecture is and what parts are actually compatible between the two? I don't know.

By say 1980, all 15XX models were well into using the cal.3XXX. Now they're running out of spare parts for those cal.15XX. It's definitely case by case basis, region by region for those models now if there were grumblings about it a decade ago. We're getting close to 40 years after ceasing production after watches that used them, after all.

The 15XX movements are reputed to be superb. A few weeks ago some anon explained that they were an over engineered marvel of a movement.

Anon I'm sorry.

Your father got you a Steinhart for your graduation. You loved it. You wore it everyday. It was your pride and joy. Finally you could show the world what you were made of, and that you, after all these years had earned the right to wear your first Swiss Made luxury watch.

Then, alas, you found /g/. You found /wt/ and anons were talking about all types of horological technology, forms and functions, complications and designs, reliability and value for money. You were home at last, among your fellow watch connoisseurs.

As you were scrolling away, you saw someone else posted their Steinhart.. and you knew it was time, time to share with the world your own timepiece for all to admire and adore!

So you did. And then the comments came in. But, something was wrong. They were.. Unexpected. They were.. cruel. Harsh. Demeaning and offensive.

What? Why? How can this be? After all this time and love you have shared with your watch you've just been told, that slab of metal around your wrist, is in fact a steaming pile of dogshit.

Ceramic or pre-ceramic?

Besides the bezel being different materials and the dots on the dial being larger on the ceramic version, are there any other differences between a 114060 & 14060 or 116610 & 16610?

I don't really care all that much about the beze material, but I think the smaller hour dots in the pre-ceramic are aesthetically superior...

Thoughts? Very much considering a no-date, preceramic 14060

Get a 14060 if you want something collectible. It will patina beautifully and it's the very last of the two-line Submariners. You get all of the advantages of a vintage + a modern high beat movement, white gold hands and applied indices, and a sapphire crystal.

My advise is by the seller not the watch. Don't just try and find whoever is selling it cheapest.
>>
>>60408507
If it's specifically the 14060 (and not the later variants and transitional shit) then the newer 114060 has rolex's inhouse mainspring and anti-shock system: parachom bleu and paraflex.

The 14060 uses a nivarox hairspring. Nivarox is owned by swatch, and they have basically a near monopoly on swiss hairspring production. Like with their movements and ebauches, they've been threatening to cease selling them outside the swatch group. Hence one of the reasons why rolex finally decided to invest in their own production and innovation.

KIF is a shock protection system, like incabloc, that's been around for ages. I don't know who owns the patent for the design, if anyone anymore, but rolex decided to create their own system, that, in theory, is now better.

Since the subs were great and survived shit before these in-house additions, so you're not missing out on much really. If you go for the very last 14060M's made, the ones with the fugly ROLEXROLEXROLEX rehaut and the cluttered 4liner COSC dial, you'll get the parachom blue hairspring and paraflex shock.

Oh, and the newer sub bracelets absolutely shit on the fucking shitty embarrassment that is the old one. It is a substantially different feeling, so much so that many people might write off the old subs purely because the bracelet it crap compared to the new one. If you don't plan on using the bracelet this is obviously a moot point.

Oh, and the case: The newer subs definitely look bigger on the wrist, so if you're a wristlet don't even consider it. Unless you're a mainland Chinese (or any other asian these days, really), in which case you'll disregard all advice on taste anyway and do that thing you do.

The newer subs overall seem very inelegant compared to the older ones. Perhaps you don't want elegance in what is nominally at any rate, a diver's tool watch. But it's not as if you can't have both, and the newer one definitely doesn't. To each his own on taste I guess, unless you're an arab, or a red chinese, or an arabchinese.

Disgusting.

Thank for this fellas

Now I'm a bit more confused and need to do some soul searching

It definitely seems that the bracelet is worth is just buy itself. I'm white btw and I don't think I'm a wristlet - 7inch so I figure that's average

I'm definitely one for a more 'muted' aesthetic and don't like loud breitling-esque shit. Which is why I like the smaller hour dos on the old version

Also - which is the true 14060? Which models are the transitional or models one should avoid

I think right now, based in your posts, the 114060 is probably better, but I need to think on this for another month at least

Some more thoughts:
The new sub feels expensive. It feels like it could cost how much it does. An older 14060 doesn't. It's costly, but that's because of vintage appeal, not due to actual feel in hand, imo anyway. Not that it's flimsy, but relative to the other one it almost sorta does. Bracelet really doesn't help in that regard.

The bezel is very fucking flashy, and I KNOW what watch someone is wearing if they've got a new sub or gmt, but with the older ones it's not as obvious at a distance (I mean, rolex designs are still damned obvious but the older ones don't draw as much attention to themselves.). They don't fit under a shirtcuff as well, either (at least for me).

>>60408845
This guy seems to be suggesting the earlier 14060's with the cal.3000 and tritium dials.

Okay, sure, tritium dials age in a certain distinctive way if you're into that, but I myself would prefer usable lume. The middle period 14060's replaced tritium with superluminova, which will never patina, but still actually glow.

14060's got a modified movement (and became the "Modified"), where the calibre received a full balance bridge instead of the balance cock (sorta half bridge thing) of before. I believe the sub date already had this modified movement for a good while and it was just a case of finally the 14060 catching up.

A balance bridge should be more sturdy and secure, at least in theory, and for a rugged sports watch that's kinda what you want. Still, a bridge is generally rarer than cock and it's not as if movements with cocks can't handle shit. All rolex movements now use bridges. They might have tidied up the movement a smidgen around the same time, not the full Lange treatment, just made it mildly nicer than before. Not that it matters as you'll never see it.

The last of the 14060M's (the last of the non-ceramic non-dates) got full COSC certification. So baibai 2line dial of brevity and simplicity and welcome the dial-novel >>60409132 , even later ones got the monstrous new repeating rehaut and that's when the parachom/flex were added. Then it was discontinued.
>>
>>60410777
My personal preference:
14060M, 2 liner (non-COSC).
Why? Because it represents the very last vestige, like, the final drop of "tool watchmaker" rolex may have had left. The newest subs are way, way into "rolex the wrist jewelry maker" territory. Make that "wrist jewelry maker that's sensibly jumping on the bandwagon and pandering to those asians that want to wear clocks on their wrists".

If I wanted a true rolex toolwatch, I'd go for a 5513/12. But something evocative of those times is enough for me, and I believe the upgraded movement and actually usable luminous compound of the 14060/M trump the premium paid for the real last toolwatch: an early 80's 5513's with matt dial, painted rather than applied indices (applied indices are white gold), and that scratcherific acrylic crystal.

But then that goes back to my spiel about getting shit that old serviced properly. I've looked into this and thought about it a lot since my semenmaster 2254 was stolen and the 14060M is the only dive watch I think I would consider to replace it, well, it's either that or the 16710 since the timezone feature would actually be more useful to me than time only watch.

Yet, you cannot deny that there's a beauty in the symmetry and simplicity of the 2liner submariner that seems to be such a rarity in the world of modern horology.

I will make my own choice within the next few weeks. (I think)

grrrr this is getting difficult

Appreciate all your replies btw

The 14060M is the one I think (and was set until today) was the most aesthetically pleasing, but some of these posts made me think the 114060 is superior, especially because of the bracelet.

I don't know anymore. By the way, do you have some of sort of literature you'd recommend? Seems like you have a wealth of knowledge on the subject - especially the no-date sub which is the piece I'm eye'ing

I'm not so familiar with DJ's, but I recall that something along the lines of that all rolex watches made after 2010, so after the serial numbers changed from the lettered series that was so easy to follow to a random series of numbers, should have the inhouse hairspring.

There's probably some transitional hybrid fuckery going on in the very last series before the randomised series, or in the early randomised series in 2010/2011 in the DJ line, but I don't know anything about that. I can only hazard to surmise that if you were to pick any DJ in the early V series and older, you'd not get the parachom blue. After that I don't think you can be certain.

Go try on the current model. Try the older one.

The newer sub is a better built watch, and superior in every material way. In fact, I think the "special" steel that rolex use may have been tweaked for the modern models as well. To what supposed benefit I don't recall. What it lacks it lacks in areas that are intangible. If the this immaterial shit doesn't stirr you as much as the thought of having the best and brightest, then get the modern model.

>By the way, do you have some of sort of literature you'd recommend? Seems like you have a wealth of knowledge on the subject - especially the no-date sub which is the piece I'm eye'ing
I'm sure that there's books out there that you could waste money on, but I've just trolled the usual watchforums for the past decade, on and off (off when I'm satisfied with what I have, on when I want to buy something new). There's enough information there, free. It's just a matter of wading through the shit, much like this place (though here's a whole different kind of shit).

You're not the only person whose had this dilemma; I'm sure if you do a search a million hits on rolexforums or watchuseek will come up.

I can only give you my own thoughts from my own journey. I prefer a degree of discretion, and will be wearing either the 14060M or 16710 on a nato. The newer models are too inconspicuous for me, too shiny. Besides, i don't want to encourage any more fucking thieves ffs.

Oh yeah, one last thing: the new sub cases have totally done away with the drilled lugs of the older 14060/M's. Drilled lugs make taking off the bracelet yourself infinitely easier, and are a remnant of the whole toolwatch heritage. If you like to change your shit up every so often, it's easier with drilled lugs. A small thing, but something I personally would miss.

Citizen BN0151. Solar quartz => accurate and low-maintenance. Lacks the cool factor present in mechanicals though. If I wanted something purely practical, I'd get a G-Shock. If I wanted something that looks nice, I'd get the SKX007/9. The Citizen is in the middle.

Where do you live that you're surrounded by thieves? I mean, I'm in NYC and never come across this shit, but I also stay away from nigtown and Chinatown

Also as for literature, I meant like a well reasearched and documented article or two somewhere, but it looks like you got your knowledge from lurking forever, which is what I thought. Fair enough

I'll probably try the new sub at some point but looking at one of the pics above, I didn't realise just how much larger the bezel was on the new one. It looks like 40-50% bigger then you add the maxi dial and...goddamn idk

My collection consists of a Mickey Mouse quartz watch from Aliexpress, 3 Vostok Komandirskie-Kadets, a dope Casio and a few thrifted vintage mechanicals that don't keep proper time. I have no craving for expensive watches but I appreciate how they look and how they're made. I bought myself a nice piece of land next to the sea that I will build a house on once I've saved enough. The cost of the land could have gotten me a few lovely Rolexes and maybe one day I will get those Rolexes after I'm sitting in my house.

Could some of yall post pics of your amphibias?
If you have the blue dial, is it really blue, or more teal?
And does your date window have a square around it or is it bare?
Are there fake vostoks, or are these differences just depending on when the watches were made?
Mine looks more blue in photos, but definitely looks more teal in natural sunlight.
Also how big is the face/crown, and what size strap does yours take.
IDK why I'm being paranoid about possibly getting a fake vostok, it really shouldn't matter, it's not a Rolex or anything but feel more comfortable if I could confirm it's not fake.

>>
>>60419576
Now, I agree with you that the guy you are replying too is underselling Rolex, as Rolex movements do feature functional decoration and their cases/dials/bracelets are quite nice.

On the other hand, Grand Seiko legitimately does do significantly more hand inspection, hand polishing and hand assembly work, does more decoration on their movements, and is generally regarded to have better case/dial/hands/bracelet finishing than Rolex, and actually better than any non haute horlogerie maker.

They do only make about 5,000 of them a year, after all. They can afford to lavish attention on them.
