I get that when people use windows because they need it for their work. They need it for testing their software, they depend on it because Adobe Photoshop for example only runs on this pile of shit.

BUT FOR A FUCKING SCREEN
WHICH ONLY NEEDS TO RUN 24/7 AND DISPLAY FUCKING TEXT,

why the fuck would you not use an OS which basically cannot be infected? why not use an AVR even? or some embedded ARM shit?

why the fuck do you need windows 7, 2 gigs of ram, an x86 cpu and at least 40 gigs hard drive?

tell me whyyy?
>>
windows has a wide base of compatibility on a wide variety of hardware. you can easily buy a computer and reflash it to run whatever.

most airport monitors used windows because a lot of the relevant commercial off the shelf software used it
http://www.fids.com/flight-information-display-system/
>The FIDS screens are usually professional, intelligent monitors in portrait or landscape orientation with a build-in or attached appliance. To maximize possibilities airports often use a Microsoft Windows based PC for this. To reduce costs some airports nowadays choose for Android devices with an HTML5 solution as an alternative.

train stations use similar system and that's probably why.

i know that the airport monitors in PHL Terminal F actually run on Macs (saw a kernel panic on them once, "Please restart your Mac", etc.)...

Because people need to play solitaire on their train timetables

I miss the old style timetables, now I get to see ads (or now ransomware) on a shitty burnt in screen instead of an aesthetic flipping

Businesses never learn, if you keep warning them and suggest anything besides windows you will probably get fired.
>>
>>60385843
I don't really think it has anything to do with OS - even if they used Linux they would still get infected with something due to shitty security practices.
>>
>>60385989
>Elon Musk was kicked out from Paypal for wanting to use Windows server
still funny
>>
>>60386026
They could use something more embedded, like a BSD for example. So the attack surface would be even smaller.

>>60385989

It's funny because my boss recently proposed to "just drop" this Active Directory stuff because "lol it's cheaper" and we could "probably handle the policies some way else"
>>
>>60386066
You can get security updates for embedded software too. But I doubt they update those things at all.
>>
>>60386066
Now this is true.
>>
Compatibility for the most part. And bosses not wanting to part with additional funding for something they'd see as a risk. They'd rather keep the status quo than have to spend additional money on changing operating systems and training.
>>
>>60386066

That would be nice.

It is nice

>Install a standard Debian stable on a standard embedded x86 PC (probably with an Intel CPU and iGPU)
>everything works
>install a light display manager and simply use a full-screen firefox or some shit
>setup a custom internal Debian mirror so every machine can be kept offline
>use a configuration management software to control update deployments
There you go. Literally $0 spent on software and you get 5 years of security update.
Repeat when the next Debian gets released.

You could, with OpenLDAP

>because it's open source it's 1000x easier to find exploits and vulnerabilities

sure because there are so many distros its hard to get a wide scale infection going but if lincucks are delusional enough to think their OS is secure they need medication
>>
>>60386274

I could also replace it with slapd.
Doesn't change the fact that you really shouldn't replace an established AD environment with a couple 10k users over night "because cheaper".
>>
>>60385843
yep, they deserve it desu. everyone knows you only use with does for what you're prepared to lose. there's no actual way these people thought their hospitals, train stations, etc were secure with Windows, absolutely no way; they have not cared when they chose a compromised OS to run everything and said it was worth the risk.

You are all a bunch of unemployable morons. This is how big guys do it:
>buy 100 identical dell workstations at bulk prices
>install 30 as cash registers, 20 in offices, 10 for other employess and 3 as screen drivers
>throw rest into storage
>hire a pajeet to take care of it
>5 years later three video cards and one disk dies
>pajeet just replaces it with storage parts
>10 years later big screen gets infected
>hire a security contractor to fix it
>>
>>60386239
>implying windows has drivers
Windows has 0 ootb driver support. If you want drivers you either have to install them via CD/DVD or internet, which is retarded for anything other than desktop computers. Meanwhile Linux has the best ootb driver support across all architectures. You have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>60387408
in my business we had a budget for a 100 dell workstations and 5 spares.
Dell business warranty is great though. They dispatch someone to replace broken part within 24h with pretty much no questions asked. That's a total opposite of their normal customer support through.
>>
>>60385843
to give it the benefit of the doubt, it could be a single computer handling it all somewhere and it just outputs to the public monitor

Are they very expensive compared to monitors or just monitors are seen as more modern? In terms of readability they seem to beat screens, at least in terms of sheer size

no need for airgaps in a server rack. If fact, gaps in this case will make air circulation worse.
