I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Because of how easy it is to completely break linux.
I tried installing Lubuntu on my old x41t. Ran great except that I got two popup messages every time I hit the desktop that said "System problem detected." and gave me literally no details as to what was broken.
Supposedly its just an issue with 32 bit Ubuntu not liking some hardware. Oh well.
I find you can install the unity desktop which I quite like, and I think its great for a tablet pc.
Install it, it comes with bloat and it defaulted to unity8 which is absolute trash and lags like no other compared to literally anything else.
Fuck it, uninstall it.
Logout, go to log back in, lightdm greeter looks like the unity theme, oh boy.
Can't log in, it just flashes black and then back to the login screen every time.
Fucking toasted, fine
Turn it off, back on again, this time i have no greeter, can't get into the terminal, but it loaded something because I have 3 new system problem messages again with no details.
I promptly beat my x41t to death, its in the trash now, along with the usb of Lubuntu

Id rather use shitty fucked up windows 10 with its forced updates and telemetry than ever use linux again.
I'm fucking tired of it, I have tried so many times, and so many machines, so many different distros and they're all shit and break randomly after installing shit.
Trying to install java, whoops, java doesn't work and neither does flash anymore, good luck faggot
Go to install xfce, guess what, now unity has xfce elements all over it and xfce has a bunch of black spots, better install compliz (hint, good luck)

I'm putting windows 8.1 on my shitbox, that never gave me any problems whatsoever

They won't support alternative systems if those don't have enough users. That's why it's counter-productive when people say "nobody should use Linux since they have no programs". It should be the other way around, everyone should be using it unless they need some professional software that isn't available. Then we would see more software support in the near future.

I'll have to check it again, last time I gave it a run it wasn't so great. The primary things for me are playback control and library layout. I like a nice cursor follows playback, playback follows cursor and a tree style library layout that auto adds to the current playlist.

>>60374167

I'd wager that almost everyone on the planet that owns a personal computer plays music on it, I highly doubt I'm the odd one out. Maybe you think audio playback is trivial but I'd rather not be without a proper player.

>>
>>60374620
>Use "freetard" OS
>call the maintainers and developers "mouthbreathing autists"

Go back to Windows or cuckOS. You don't score any coolguy points here for using GNU/Linux.
>>
Because:

1) Quite a few of my steam games don't have native Linux support and don't work properly with Wine

2) I use Adobe products like Photoshop, and I can't just use something like Gimp because Photoshop is pretty much the industry standard.

Once those two problems are out of the way, I'll probably make the switch.
>>
>>60374657
The task is not "play an audio file" it is "manage my entire audio library", yes I can find anything to replace playing a single file, I have yet to find something that handles everything foobar already does, even basic features like "stop after current" are missing in a lot of players, forget about library managment, searching, auto playlists, extensible via sdk, and more. For someone that listens to audio a majority of the day, it's an important aspect of my desktop and I'm not willing to settle for less.

The idea of just replicating all I need myself has crossed my mind but I haven't had the time to implement it yet and I don't see it happening anytime soon unless I absolutely have to.

>>
>>60375889
You're right but its a better option than buy a console to play games
>>
This is pretty simple.

Most people who still use Windows and don't want to switch to Linux use it because:

-They need an office suite worth a shit
-They need audio/video production software
-They need graphic design software
-They want to enjoy AAA games and console ports to PC
-They don't want to deal with anything else they're not too familiar with, like the folder structure from linux
-They can't deal with shit not being installed with installation wizards or to have to google why suddenly programs like Steam will download libraries they have to delete in order to make the client work properly
-They don't want issues with tearing, multimonitor support or specific hardware support (like certain graphic tablets, sound cards or gamepads)
-They use a tablet or a device in which installing linux is fairly hard because of how fucking backwards it is (also a device that should be thrown away, but still, I have one of those)
-They're afraid of terminals (I met some people that fit this description)

Most people who use macOS and don't want to switch to Linux use it because:

-They need some of the software described on Windows as well
-With some extra software that's not even available on Windows for production
-They need to have the whole experience of something that just works in most cases, with shit breaking as a rare exception and a system that's not exactly secure but still doesn't get attacked as often
-They simply do not want to deal with the system from the same perspective: they see it more as a secondary tool to get what they want done
-They'd rather pay for software that does what they want than just wait until some good samaritan does it for free, or program such software themselves
-They don't want issues with tearing or multimonitor support

What do you mean by "get a life"? A life when your OS is destroying itself every month? Or a life where you instead of playing games are compiling your own Linux kernel?

Maybe try Arch or something else less hostile to customization than ubuntu.

Just do yourself a huge favor and switch to Linux. Do you really want corporations like Microsoft to be the ones in control of your devices? Wouldn't you rather be the master? You can always keep Windows on a partition and dual boot for when you feel like playing video games or using whatever awful software your job forces you to use while keeping your documents, nay, your entire digital life on a secure platform that works for you and only you.

This is really one of the most cancerous thing about IDEs. Since they infest the build process, everyone has to use the same thing.

The same thing has been possible to say about OpenGL for many years, though, and yet devs still choose Direct3D. I don't know what kind of marketing Khronos would have to do for retards not to choose whatever Microsoft jams down their throats.

It's not really the fact that Microsoft specifically is bad at making operating systems, that's beside the point. It's the disproportionately large amount of malware for Windows compared to other operating systems.

So Windows being at the top with 52.2% means it's almost finished?
>>
Because my computer field / hobby / passion is to optimize, customize Windows and being very good at shortcuts. I have achieved quite a lot over the last couple of years. I can safely say my setup (keybindings, how things are set up etc) is of very high quality, and there is a lot work behind it.

I've used Linux a little bit, many concepts, ideas and design used in Windows are from Linux. A little bit mac too.

I admire Linux, but as an advanced Windows-users, I use the potential of Windows because of its tremendous software-capabillity. And no, I'm not talking about gaming and all that kind of things. But you can say, my keybinding system is somewhat similar.

It's simply not the same with Linux.
Linux works a little bit different.

If you are normal/standard/casual windows users, I recommend Linux. Linux does much more, open source and is more comfy as a programming environment for many developers. Alternative, start to learn how to use Windows better.

If you are a gamer I recommend Windows.

If you are an advanced users of Windows like me, it can be for the best to stick to Windows. For me, I honestly don't have a choice.

Windows is more advance and more productive (in everything but programming) than Linux, prove me wrong
>>
>>60383196
1. It's not a bait. There is no reason for you to be angry.
2. This can be difficult for many users to see, but Windows is capable of many things thanks to third-party software. If someone have optimized it, it's good for him.
3. People have different needs, interests, understanding and all OS have flaws.
>>
>>60383437
Partly right.
The more correct term is user-friendly. Windows is made for end-users. But thanks to IDEs and the popularity, it's normally okay to program on it.
>>
>>60379172
>secure

Do you really think Linux is safe from the CIA/NSA? Using Linux simply gets rid the of the middleman of either Microsoft or Apple.
>>
>>60383583
There were some Linux exploits evident in the Wikileaks files, but not nearly as many as there were for Windows. Shadow Brokers stuff has been largely for Windows.

Linux is more secure than Windows.

Because I don't want to keep fighting my pc and having to struggle to make basic shit work. My pc is a tool, it's means to an end, not the other way around. Linux is for neets whose time isn't worth anything.
