The internet brought too much hedonism and people care less and less every year.

We are actually not in 1984, I could argue we are rather in brave new world where we are controlled by what we love rather than what we fear. There is so much mindless entertainment and sex is everywhere everyone can be pacified easily and only start caring about the pursuit of self pleasure.

Just some boilerplate to keep people from accidentally posting botnet in this thread~
CC BY-SA is like the GPL but simpler.

If you spent the 5 minutes required to read the appendix to 1984, you'd realize how obvious it is that we're in both.

OP is a retard but kudos^999 to you, anon. Someone finally fucking understood that, it's what I think since I read that book in high school. Today's society's deceiving is not made with fear, but with giving everyone all the sex, mindless entertainment and pleasure they want. There's no moral restrain anymore about sexual promiscuity, if you can't get girls you have all the porn and hentai you want, there are social networks and cancer Netflix shows and other shit to mindless entertain you to death so that you'll ignore everything which could actually make you think a bit deeper about yourself and your life, and religion or other forms of spirituality are made fun of everywhere while also making you think that you're a special snowflake by doing so.
Sorry for the rant but sometimes one must say things as they are, at least where there's no retarded neckbeard to downvote you

I was considering putting that as well, but some would argue against that.

Think about Russia. Orwell is right and lately burgers have to taste 1984 too, not just the eternal "fun".

I noted a parallel between one piece of dystopian literature with our current situation in 2017, but I didn't say nor imply that we're living in 1984.
Naturally, neither it nor Brave New World predicted the exact state of the world, but some elements of both still came into our culture eventually.
While most people are definitely more preoccupied with pleasure and other trivial issues, there are still those that strive for something greater. People aren't actively discouraged from their ambitions to the extent they were in BNW. Both it and 1984 have predicted a cultural shift away from valuing privacy; though we're not quite at the point where people are considered "up to something" by the general population if we retire to our homes on our own a la BNW, the government takes great strides and leaps to figure out even our most miniscule thoughts a la 1984.
tl;dr writers aren't psychic, no one book has predicted 100% what'll happen, there are more than one threats to society, pay attention to everything.

They hadn't predicted it exactly but while control of population is something as old as the world, the idea that people would be distracted from living a significant life by giving them "what they want" is the real deal that most people ignore imho, and that's why I like to stress the Brave New World comparison.
An example of this is that every normie (I don't know on the US but in Europe this applies basically everywhere) will agree to something like "church/religions are made to control you" and ignore how they're absorbed in their mindless shits and pleasures, which religions generally tend to warn them about. Not because religions are all about prohibiting something, but because they tell you "hey, if you numb yourself in pleasures and stupid shit it will be harder to actually feel the real things in life". They say they have no gods, but let's see if you take the shit they base themselves on if they won't react as the fiercest of the crusaders to defend it.
