What does /g/ think of federated social networks? Is it the future of our communication?
Links for three btw:
GNU social: https://gnu.io/social/
Mastodon: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon
Friendica: http://friendi.ca/
The drill is that they can communicate with with each other regardless of the software you use.
I only heard about diaspora, I'm really thinking about joining it, running and joining a social media which you/your friend have control on seems like a good idea

Is there a difference between all of these? You said they can "communicate with each other" can they do the same thing with diaspora?

Mastodon is the only one with actual users and an usable interface.

These three can interconnect with each other because they implement the same protocol, OStatus. By default they can't connect with diaspora since the latter's protocol is different. It can be achieved via plugins on GNU social and friendica but you'll not be able to delete your posts, so it's not recommended.
Also, I didn't enjoy using diaspora at all; its interface is unintuitive and in general it feels like a shitty mix of Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

There are plenty of good GNU social instances, though lots of them are blocked on some big mastodon instances because the admins are SJW cucks.

It's definitely a step in the right direction. We need to move away from centralization.
