Tinfoils of /g/ee, why do you use encryption? To or for what good reason and extent? What do you honestly have to hide?
>>

My nudes.
>>
>>60347546
Nice try FBI.
In all seriousness though, I'm just paranoid/overly concerned about most of the things I do, so i encrypt everything and backup weekly all my machines and home servers. Just... Because.
>>
>>60347546
ext4 is enough encryption for normies. too lazy to really encrypt everything and no one comes here anyway so it would just make using the files harder to me.
>>
>>60347546
It's enabled by default on uTorrent.
>>
>>60347546
>why do you use encryption?
To store my personal data in the "cloud".

If I had a laptop I would encrypt the drive because they are easy to steal. And if someone were to steal my hardware they would not get my personal documents.
>>
>>60347546
>Tinfoils of /g/ee, why do you use encryption?
So that if my equipment gets stolen/lost shit doesn't fall into hands it doesn't belong?
Or, so that I can easily throw my old drives away or sell them without having to worry about people recovering shit?

>To or for what good reason and extent?
Does there really need to be a good reason other than just because I want?

>What do you honestly have to hide?
I don't "have to hide" any of my personal documents, true. However it just makes perfect sense to do so from a security standpoint. Or do you buy shit from stores online who can't even be fucked to use SSL?
>>
>>60347546
I don't encrypt my desktop because that never goes anywhere but I use full disk encryption on my laptop for obvious reasons.
>>
>>60347764
>"cloud"
This is the only shit I encrypt, I just upload encrypted containers. The funny thing is, though, they don't really contain anything interesting. I guess it's just fun and makes me feel leet.

>Tinfoils of /g/ee, why do you use encryption?
It's natural in my line of work so I also naturally do it at home. All my devices have encrypted storage. My firewall runs from read only media and sends logs to another computer to make tampering and intrusion more difficult.

>To or for what good reason and extent?
I guess I'm overly paranoid but then at work we either rip out cameras and mics from our laptops at work. Cellphones and other personal electronic gadgets are not allowed inside the complex and are checked in at one of the guard stations.

Valid personal reasons are privacy really. My brother and his wife, my nieces and nephews borrow my condo regularly when I'm travelling for work. Considering I have on average 160 hotel nights a year I'm not home that much.

>What do you honestly have to hide?
Nothing except personal information and personal software repos I make money of. The personal information are revenue information from my side projects for taxes, bills, salary specifications, insurance info, other important job information and other similar documents

Password of my accounts. I also have scans of all my legal documents. Also this: >>60347641

Referring to disabling password login and use ssh key login? Otherwise encrypting the VPS image is kind of useless unless you want some protection against lazy VPS providers not wiping disks before selling them.

Because is funny. So we create a lot of conspiracy theories to our autism don't be so retarded. But if the government copy your theories, aren't our fault.

ssh itself is encrypted

i'm a tinfoil and don't bother with encryption

if i had to do something illegal no electronics would be involved

>What do you honestly have to hide?

None of your damn business! AM I BEING DETAINED?!

But seriously now, I do it for 2 reasons: 1) Ideological, my private life is my own and nobody else will have access to it, regardless of how insignificant it is and 2) our governments are becoming more totalitarian by the day. It won't take long until jail time will be given for trivial reasons. Keeping your life a black box reduces that risk.

Law in question right here:

"child pornography material" means:

(i) is engaged in, or appears to be engaged in, a sexual pose or sexual activity (whether or not in the presence of other persons); or

(ii) is in the presence of a person who is engaged in, or appears to be engaged in, a sexual pose or sexual activity;

and does this in a way that reasonable persons would regard as being, in all the circumstances, offensive; or

(b) material the dominant characteristic of which is the depiction, for a sexual purpose, of:

(i) a sexual organ or the anal region of a person who is, or appears to be, under 18 years of age; or

(ii) a representation of such a sexual organ or anal region; or

(iii) the breasts, or a representation of the breasts, of a female person who is, or appears to be, under 18 years of age;

in a way that reasonable persons would regard as being, in all the circumstances, offensive; or

(c) material that describes a person who is, or is implied to be, under 18 years of age and who:

(i) is engaged in, or is implied to be engaged in, a sexual pose or sexual activity (whether or not in the presence of other persons); or

(ii) is in the presence of a person who is engaged in, or is implied to be engaged in, a sexual pose or sexual activity;

and does this in a way that reasonable persons would regard as being, in all the circumstances, offensive; or

(d) material that describes:

(i) a sexual organ or the anal region of a person who is, or is implied to be, under 18 years of age; or

(ii) the breasts of a female person who is, or is implied to be, under 18 years of age;

and does this in a way that reasonable persons would regard as being, in all the circumstances, offensive.

What's the best way to encrypt? I use TrueCrypt for my Windows stuff, but I need to encrypt my linux boxes. Do I use LUKS?
>>
>>60347546
A typical system will have a BIOS password that prevents BIOS entry and boot order changes. Drives are encrypted.

It's not government level safe, necessarily, but it's enough to legally show a reasonable expectation of privacy and to prevent joe jackass from stealing and selling the machine.
