>Microbot push for activating dumb devices remotely Any

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

>Microbot push for activating dumb devices remotely

Any /g/ents tried this shit? Is it true you essentially need the 90$ hub to get any real effectiveness out of it?

So, it's a solenoid actuator for people who don't know how to build a solenoid actuator?

I could make this with a soda can, a nail, and some copper wire.
>>

I think it's more of the networking and phone app part rather than the chinkshit linear actuator that I'm sure is inside.

You gotta stick a battery, some sort of microcontroller, and the netorking components all in one package, then write an app for it.

All in all, dumber things have been sold.

nvm I just checked the price, 50 fucking dollars to push a fucking button what the hell are they thinking.

50 dollars to push a button using BLUETOOTH. You need the 90$ hub too for wifi and outside home connectivity. At least gen1 was like that.

Chip computer ($9) or Pi ZeroW ($10), I think there's a fairly cheap Intel single board computer as well, and a 9V battery.

Fantastic, now you got the device assembled, can you activate the switch remotely from your phone with timers and triggers as well?
>>
>>60352114
Absolutely! Even if you don't know a decent scripting language, it's not difficult to make your own app in gamesalad or a similar drag-and-drop to control everything from.
>>
>>60352171
and that's assuming that you want the app to be fully customized, there's plenty of existing apps that you can control a pi's GPIOs from.

Will the time and investment to find and learn all of this during my precious free time exceed 140 buckaroos worth of effort?

I think I earn it in about 1 day of work.
>>
I was just talking with my brother about this, and we think that, depending on the number of controllable GPIO pins, we could build the solenoids and the relays, and then set up a webcam with audio so people can play our piano over the internet.

>>60352322
If you'd rather buy it, then buy it; I'd rather build it.
>>
>>60352322
It took me exactly 2 hours of fucking around with an arduino with no knowledge of how it operated to get it activating 6 solenoids in a repeating pattern.
$140 a day isn't spectacular money, I wouldn't waste it on something so obscenely overpriced as this.

Of course but don't you acknowledge the difference? It sounds to me you got both the skills and the knowledge pretty much at hand to make it as soon as the parts are available to you. I'm not going to buy it and probably not build it.

>>60352414
Are you assuming your level of expertise is comparable just because you had "no knowledge of how it operated"? A person not even thinking about buying arduino or doesn't even know what it is would take far longer even when placed equally to you with "no knowledge of how it operated".

The mention of salary was just to compare time, obviously it's no where near anything someone would call good or even decent.
>>
>>60352561
You know how you get to where you have the skills and knowledge pretty much at hand?

Building it instead of buying it.
>>
>>60352618
Do you also say this when considering to get a new house? Building a home is an insanely useful skill yet few do it.
>>
>>60352561
>don't you acknowledge the difference?
I do.
> It sounds to me you got both the skills and the knowledge
Maybe, I probably fail at as many things as I succeed at, but those failures have taught me a great deal about how to do things that I may have never been able to do otherwise.
>>
>>60352661
Full new house? No, but I could do it.

Wiring, plumbing, all that other shit? I do it myself if it's a small job because it's faster and cheaper. Just paid someone to repaint my house though because it was worth it, and painting the full exterior of a house is not fun and very time consuming.

Let's use a car as an example, it would be impossible to build an equivalent for less, because it is a large and complex process. Industry allows us to repeatedly do complex processes by automating them, industrial revolution, economy of scale, etc.

This is a very simple, very niche product, and we are on a technology board. You should be able to build a working replica for less, in a short amount of time. If you don't want to, or think it's too time consuming fine, but don't say it's too hard, because unless you are a double digit IQ retard, it most definitely isn't.
