GOOGLE CHROMEBOOKS LITERALLY BTFO

Being on the Windows Store also means that the distros will be able to work on the education-focused Windows 10S. This could give Microsoft an extra edge in appealing to computer science and engineering students who may want access to the open-source operating system for developing code.

Someone spoonfeed me.
Assuming I was interested in one of those distros, what are the advantages and disadvantages of installing from the Windows Store vs installing natively?

You can trick /g/ into thinking that you use linux while still being a tech illiterate retard.

You won't be running actual Linux kernel. It's re branded cygwin so all the performance and low level benefits provided by Linux are lost.

I am still waiting for cron support
once that is done, I am done with installing a Linux distro, because I just use bash and play vidya

you can install whatever you want

so basically if you want crontab to work, you need to have bash open on startup

Windows Store appeals to no one, not even Developers.

As a first, it doesn't even have Microsoft's flagship of Visual Studio. Maybe that will change but let's not forget its severe lack of Eclipse, IntelliJ, SharpDevelop, Notepad++, Python, etc. I mentioned all these things because these are the bare minimum programs that computer science students would use and they are unable to get them on Windows Store.

As a second, Windows Store contains mostly shovelware. It has not been seen as a worthwhile place to develop for because of the severe lack of interest, plus the fact that Microsoft takes a significant portion of your freedom as a developer in this store.

The fact is, the Windows Subsystem for Linux is a mediocre project that yields very few fruits. Having used it myself, I found that it is impossible to install many applications that would work on an actual Ubuntu installation.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>too dumb to disable forced shutdowns

It's great if you want Linux but with ads and spyware and a whole other operating system as bloat.

Anyone who actually likes this is a literal cuckold who will no doubt make excuses to let Microsoft fuck their OS.

This might actually be a good thing for Linux though, Seeing as Windows is already at 90% market share and Linux is less than 2%, Linux has no where to go but up and Windows has no where to go but down. By allowing Windows users to easily test-drive Linux they're going to drive people to the better OS. It's highly unlikely they're going to steal back people who have already abandoned microsoft cuckware.
