They can be nice to have if your onboard is noisy as fuck or doesnt have the power to drive your shit. I've got a pair of K701's that sound about as good as inears from apple without an amp.

My headset is much louder when connected to my phone then my PC, like by a lot. I suspect it has to do with power, because the front ports are loud also.
Would a USB soundcard help? I have one that I bought a while ago.
