Why do you use gentoo, /g/?
I personally love the slot system and the ability to keep openrc. Portage is very good at keeping the system running and stable, the compile times for your average package is a few minutes.
What's not to love /g/?

It's not shitposting, I wanted a genuine discussion

I've been using Mint for a while and been getting into C programming, so I've been considering gentoo just to force myself to learn more about the underlying system.
Does gentoo actually force you to know about the init scripts, general startup, process management, etc. You know, all the stuff a normal OS would do for you?

Not if you choose to use systemd, but it's kinda more complicated with openrc, yes. Nothing too bad though, it's perfectly usable

I like that it builds everything from source. It has a lot of software options including overlays. Very configurable. Easily hardened with building everything with hardened profile. No systemd.
