>C++ master race API
>Kit system allows for fast development of things
>translation system allows for developers to get shit done instead of reinventing the wheel and supporting every format for you (i.e, if i'm making an Audio editor, i don't need to write a million importers so files can go in, the OS can do it for me, i just work on my fucking Audio software)
>Clean and consistant everything (You can't even do this with lunix)
>No need for shitty 1GB UI Toolkits like GTK, QT, KDE
>UI easier to code for than Winforms in C
>File system that's Queryable
>File system that basically allows for 0B files because the data's stored on the file system DB
>Comfy, Efficient UI
>UI system\design that's easy to use, but better if you want to master it
>Mastering it's not even that hard, just RTFM.
>Multiple Desktops
>Smart design choices like the Server thing (similar to plan9) and OOTB Multithreading support
>UI and System overall promote productivity over autism and spying on people.
>I can do my e-mail without some shitty mail client or web interface

Shit most of this was done 20 years ago by Be... the Haiku team just did it FOSS and supporting modern hardware.

/g/ you have like 10m to tell me why you aren't using or supporting the superior OS.
>>
There's more software and compatibility for GNU/Linux now than it is for Haiku.
The OS has to be supported by hardware producers and software developers, Haiku is too niche and starts from where GNU/Linux was many years ago.
>>
>>60307626
Do you think it could surpass linux as the desktop OS of the future if any support miraculously came to it (granted i know it took 20 some years to get Linux to be where it's at)
>>
>>60307626
ReactOS was never going to be a stable platform with the potential for replacing NT environment yet here we are.
>>
>>60307578
>/g/ you have like 10m to tell me why you aren't using or supporting the superior OS.

i don't care
>>
>>60307655
I don't think it will change, Linux will be the main open source OS, because there's no need for anything else - it does it's job well.

>>60307666
People still will use Windows when they want NT compatibility, React OS is nice, but not really needed by majority of computer users.

Niche OS are cool, I like them as well, but I don't see anything taking place of GNU/Linux in the future. I have to go now, enjoy the thread guys.
>>
No stability.
>>
>>60307879
This. Good luck mixing modern code with compilation under g++ 2.95 just to stay compatible with the C++ ABI of BeOS R5.
>>
>>60307578
>Shit most of this was done 20 years ago by Be
Yes it was, but it was nothing special.
Literary nothing MacOS or AmigaOS couldn't do already at that point and Windows was just around the corner of getting usable.

Kek, are you implying that the OS that just got printing support a few weeks ago is somehow a potential for replacing NT development? You crack me up.

Nice blanket cover statement to hide the fact you have nothing to actually say. I think Plan 9 or something even more obscure has more of a chance of being a widely used consumer OS. Just face it, Windows, macOS and maybe Chrome OS have seized it all. Linux is around too, Linux is more than good enough.

Rude desu senpai.

I'm trying to get an "old" IBM R/S 6000 up and running but i dont have the maintenance key. Think its feasable to force it with a flat head screwdriver without breaking the switch?
>>
>>60308731
Can you open the case?
If so the lock comes apart real easy and you can remove the pins and put it back together, after that you can use any key or screwdriver with the lock.

What model is it? Pics?

>>60308684

Also, it's RS/6000.

>>60308747
It's a RISC System / 6000 250. I don't have it available right now but here's a pic from google.

The key both enables maintenance mode and also unlocks the case itself.

The 7-segment display gives me a failed to mount HDD error. So I'm guessing the drive is dead. But it uses regular SCSI drives IIRC.

I don't have a GPU but i have an old IBM serial terminal.
>>
>>60308777
What are you implying?
AIX is fun.
>>
>>60308808
If you can get the case open somehow the better idea would be to remove the pins from the key, else I guess breaking the lock would destroy less than forcing open the case.
Take it to a locksmith and let them open it up, the locks aren't anything special, after that it's easy to remove the lock pins and you would have a working switch that you can use with anything.

It's standard 50pin SCSI yeah, you won't have a problem replacing the drive, the drive itself might be fine also and just requires a reinstall.
You can get MCA graphics cards that work in the System/6000 for 30 bucks on eBay also.

>>60308822
He said R/S 6000, but it's RS/6000 or System/6000.
Yes, AIX is fun.
>>
>>60308875

What happened to muh aesthetics, what are you doing IBM!?
>>
>>60308875
Can you recommend a specific GPU if you know any. I'm having problems finding them.

I think i might actually just do that, take it to a locksmith. No point in breaking it more than necessary.

Also know if theses any good place to get AIX from? Do i have to contact IBM directly?

>>60308962
I guess it's hard to make creative pizza boxes.
>>
>>60308962
Why didn't you turn the IBM logo to match the case orientation?
>>
>>60308997
Here, offer 30 bucks, he will probably accept, you can try even lower.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271232827926

Also yeah, locksmith would probably be the best for keeping the system intact as much as possible.
You might find older versions of AIX with a lot of heavy Googling.

>I guess it's hard to make creative pizza boxes.
This one's a desktop machine too actually.

>>60309011
It's a desktop machine with a tower stand, also the logo is fine and tandy, don't want to risk fucking it up, it's really well on there.
>>
>>60309050
I might be wring but i thought both the logo and 7 segment display was rotateable.
>>
>>60309068
Yeah, the display is, the front red plastic flaps open and you can just rotate it, but the logo is just a transparent plastic slab and apparently very well glued on. It might have been rotatable on some models or even revisions, but not on this one.
>>
>>60307578
>killer documentaion
thats just false, no offense to the haiku people, they're doing great given the resources but the documentation is lacking a lot
>>
>>60307578
Linux does just about everything but muh smallness better.

And muh smallness isn't really a concern on a machine that has got like 50x more storage and processing power than it needs (from a modern smartphone up). It's more about features.
>>
>>60309118
>Linux does just about everything but muh smallness better.
Linux wasn't really a thing back then though.
>>
>>60309050
Offered him 30, i had one competing bid so we'll see.
>>
>>60309149
Certainly. And it was worse at handling desktop type multitasking workloads until like 10 years after initial publication.

I'm only thinking of now, not back then.
>>
>>60309183
One competing bid? It shows just your bid there though.
I once bought one from that seller for 30 bucks and someone else did before me too for 30 bucks, so probably will sell you the last one for 30 bucks too.
>>
>>60309216
i dunno, maybe the one competing bid was referencing me.

What was the name of the 3x mini-bnc sub d interface. they use on these.
>>
>>60307578
Here, I found the problem
>Haiku OS
>>
>>60309311
It's 3W3
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350587926258

You now need also either female-female BNC adapters and a BNC to VGA cable or a BNC female to VGA cable.
Unless you just cut up the cable and put a random VGA connector to it, nothing wrong with that to save some bucks if done well.

You also need a monitor that supports sync-on-green, refer to the PS2 Linux database http://ps2linux.no-ip.info/playstation2-linux.com/sog.html for finding one.
The LCDs monitors that support it are not that hard to find, CRTs are harder to source.
Some of them also might have RGB BNC inputs already that you only need the 3W3 to BNC cable to use.
>>
>>60309375
Fuck, i used to have an old EIZO BNC screen. But i think we threw it out ;_;
>>
>>60309458
What a bummer.
Well, not all monitors with BNCs automatically support Sync-on-Green anyways, it might have been one of those.

You could also build an adapter to extract the sync signal from the green channel and use any standard VGA monitor, with off the shelf parts, but I don't think finding a monitor that supports it natively would be that hard though. Just fire up some local ads of people selling/giving away LCDs/CRTs and check the list until you find one that's confirmed to work with it.
>>
>>60309508
Aight, thanks for the help man. Appreciate it.
>>
>>60309667
No problem, have fun.
>>
>>60307578
Haiku beta is comming out soon I'll install it on my laptop
>>
>>60309847
Do that, hopefully it won't have networking support for your chipset so we won't be seeing your ass around here anymore
>>
>>60307655
It already has a wide variety of wifi support(not as wide as linux though)
>>
>>60309872
It does i have already tried a nightly image

You know for a much newer OS it sure has good hardware support especially wireless
>>
>>60308332
Yeah you can
>>
>>60308423
>Yeah I don't care. Nobody cares. Nobody ever will care.

Is this why linux got davinci 14?
>>
>>60309090
I think part of it is that they rely on the Be Book instead of rewriting it because of how similar it is...

>>60309918
part of it is because they're doing like compatability layers so that like all the BSD drivers can get ported over for networking... the porting of the i915 drivers would be awesome as shit for most people
>>
>>60307578
It's actually pretty nice
