Vostoks increase in value over time, just like Rolex. They're literally the only two brands that do this.

TAG loses a fourth of its value the moment you take it out of the store and another third when the first scratch appears on the buckle.

Some people might argue that Al Archer has an even stronger reputation than Shane does, but does that mean Al is better? I have no idea, because I'm very happy with Shane's work and wouldn't take my stuff anywhere else.

It may just be that Al participates online more (e.g. on the Omega forums) whereas Shane barely does email.

>>
>>60296279
>Vostoks increase in value over time, just like Rolex. They're literally the only two brands that do this.
Not exactly.

It's more like Rolex and Patek are the two luxury watch brands that maintain their value the best on the second hand market. There are SOME rolex models and some patek models that have actually increased in value, but it's certainly not their whole range. Don't think you can go buy some random calatrava or oyster perpetual (or the old air king) and think you've got a sound investment for your retirement.

Rolex and Patek lose the least value, unlike virtually all other watch brands which depreciate by varying degrees as soon as you wear it out of the store.

I know nothing about vostoks, their collectability, and what models have actually appreciated in value accordingly.
>>
>>60296304
I'm just checking out Als site and its interesting that he makes and sells his own watches as well. I really want one now ... Now he's an hour and a half away from me but Shane is only 30-45 minutes and I need to spend a weekend in Toronto soon anyways so I'll probably see him. How much does he charge for a quote?

Basically the story is I dropped my Sinn and from running fast to running slow. It also appears to stop spookily close to the same time when it runs out of time. And now recently my crown stem makes a grinding noise when turning. Either way I'm pretty upset and worried I'll get rape pricing. Is he fair ?

Looking for recommendations: I am going to buy a friend a watch for his birthday- hard budget is $1300. Can be grey market new or very lightly used. Looking for a watch on the sportier side, between 36 and 40mm, on a bracelet, and mechanical. Preferably no day or date, but this is going to be very hard to find, so it's not that important.

So far my #1 choice is the Oris Sixty Five. Really well designed watch with one of the most neatly integrated date windows I've seen.

I've also considered a lightly used Tudor Oysterdate, Sinn 104 (just wish that this didn't have day/date, it ruins what would otherwise be a great design), and perhaps one of the new Tag Heuer Aquaracers with the textured dial. Any thoughts?

>TAG loses a fourth of its value the moment you take it out of the store and another third when the first scratch appears on the buckle.
I think it's even more than that.

Go on Chrono24,
>filter Tag Heuer
>filter Condition:0
That will show you all the grey market shit that tag dealers flood the grey market with for whatever reason (to maintain stock, due to slow sales or whatever). Compare these Condition:0 offerings with new, in-store pricing to see just how much of a shitter a TAG really is.
>>
>>60296576
Here's some TAG production data:

In 2013 they had 500 employees (unknown amount of watchmakers, I'd say very, very few and mostly sales and marketing people) and churned out 750,000.

By 2016 they had doubled their staff, and have no doubt increased production accordingly. LVMH only care about the bottom dollar, more so than other conglomerates and that's why they're so despised; LVMH buying a brand out signals the death knell for quality for that brand.

With numbers like these, one can only surmise that TAG outsources a fuck load of their production to elsewhere. Chinese bracelets and case blanks perhaps? What about dials, hands etc.,? Would not surprise me. If Omega does it, TAG definitely does it. Movements, well, that's obvious and widely known.

They're shit. Mallbait for morons. Either buy something cheaper that's actually better, or buy something actually better that'll cost more.

Unless of course you really have a hard on for something they make and can get one for a price that reflects their true value (very, very reduced from retail price), or you're just made of money and don't mind buying semi-disposable garbage for shits and giggles.

The only people I know and see with TAG are the grossly uninformed and discerning.

TAGs are for fags, and not the stylish, homofags, I mean your real garden variety faggot.

The bezel is 43 mm, and that's how large the watch is visually.

Here are my thoughts:

>accuracy isn't all that consistent, but very good nonetheless in general
>I want something a little bigger now
>the red in the little "north" triangle on the compass bezel has faded almost to grey

$1300 can get some very nice watches, some very understated pieces too. Some vintage omegas in very nice condition can be found for a lot less, with a budget like that, you could well get something very, very nice if you were so inclined to go vintage.

Check with local jewelers. always worth a shot.
I know at my local, one of their customers has just dropped in an Explorer II for servicing, but they have mentioned that he's not against the thought of selling it.
May get lucky and find some elderly gent selling some of his watches to fund a grandchild's car? Leave some money?
Always worth asking.
>>
>>60298369
If I recall correctly, Seiko only puts that label on watches ISO certified as divers.
>>
>>60298407
Omega should be one to look for in particular, as their vintage models are extremely nice.
But you should maybe go on the hunt for older Grand Seikos perhaps, or even perhaps hunt around for a rather nice PenisQuartz, though they have achieved somewhat of a meme status here, they are fantastic pieces with beautiful dials and case work.

I like how Damasko has integrated the day and date in their watches, and supposedly their bracelet is great. The whole hardened steel think is neat too.
DA38 and bracelet should be in budget.

The Oris is a great watch by the way. You may be able to find a used Longines Legend Diver for that price, the first gen didn't have a date.

I've questions for the watch gods:

How can there be a higher level of finish re polished stainless? a mirror polish is a mirror polish, no?

is the spring drive movement considered mecha-quartz?

Is Presage's level of finishing *really* better than Sarb-level?

What happens when you commit any act of fraud?

>>60299584
Someone could polish something better. Also, someone could polish something that's more difficult to polish, or use a finishing technique that is more difficult to accomplish. I mean, you do see the stuff on the image you posted, right?

>is the spring drive movement considered mecha-quartz?
No
>>
>>60299584
I'd hardly put the finish of the 3.96 behind that of the 240 in regards to what we see in these specific images.

"someone could polish something better". oh.

Since the spring drive is a hybrid of quartz and a mechanical movement, why isn't it referred to as a mecha quartz?
>>
>>60299704
Because mechaquartz refers to a specific thing, including the fact that it's regulated and driven by a battery and small electric motor. While a spring drive is driven by a.. you know, spring.

>How can there be a higher level of finish re polished stainless? a mirror polish is a mirror polish, no?
Apparently not.

Rook up Grand Seiko Zaratsu porishshing 1000 times porished and then folded croth 1000 times and porish agen with magic croth.

Consider the hands and applied indicies on any given grand seiko with a black dial. Consider for example a nomos orion with a black dial and applied steel indicies and hands.

100% the hands and indices are finished in such a way as to capture and reflect as much light as possible, so that unless you're in absolute darkness and not normal urban nighttime where there's at least some fucking light coming from somewhere, you're still going to be able to make out the time on this unlumed watch.

The nomos orion's hands and indicies, though also highly polished, are not finished in such a way as to properly reflect light. In fact I have trouble reading it when it's in the display case in store at certain angles, whereas the GS just sparkles at any angle of view.

Chopard and Patek's is just sloppy.

Also the market's inundated with Pateks, devaluing most of their references (and the name).

No. It shouldn't. Though I'm going to assume that if the owner of such a sloppily finished patek took it in for patek's take on it they'd get fed that tired old:
>"it's within our tolerated levels, so suck a dick you whore and keep buying our shit out of a misguided sense of self and identity because you live a life so shallow and empty of meaning that you start to pin your idenity to inanimate objects and brands belonging to massive corporate entities that don't give a shit about you and only care for profit and you'll defend said brand to the death from those nasty haters because any perceived slight to that brand casts aspersions on your own self worth because you no longer have your own identity and are simply empty"

That's not me you replied to. And while GS's attention to detail is great and I am aware of the things he's mentioned as I've mentioned it before, I mean -- I own one. While he demonstrates that the amount of thought that goes into the finishing and design of the overall watch can be very important and greatly varied he doesn't really talk about an individual surface finish.

The real answer to to the question
>a mirror polish is a mirror polish, no?
is no. Straight up, plain, simple, no.

I didn't even know about this line. To be honest when I visit the shops am am oogling seiko stuff I make a beeline for the GS counter. I'll have a look next time as they seem interesting. Did presage have a run with urushi dials like year ago?

>>60299860
>>60299798
>whereas the GS just sparkles at any angle of view.
And I really mean this; they sparkle like diamonds and the dials maintain ultimate visibility. Well, except the silver dial models because it's fucking dumb to have silver on fucking silver; have fun looking at that in harsh sunlight and making out the time at a glance.

So many makers neglect hands and indices, if they're applied. One thing I really admire about GS is that they spend so much attention to crafting and designing them so that they work "without lume" as it were.
>>
>>60299860
Presage is a line that covers a large price range, the top end stuff like my SARK005 is very nice looking but falls short of my Citizen grand classic in a number of areas. The lower end stuff though like SARX015 for example is handsome but not noteworthy.

Since the discussion's turned towards finishing, I'd like to steer the thread's attention to this little Austrian brand (the only austrian brand) called Habring2 (stupid name).

Pic related is one of their inhouse movements. It struck me that it's obviously finished to a high degree, meticulous as is expected of a master watchmaker. BUT IT'S SO BORING.

Anyway, weird company. Mastered the art of modularity and they oddly ship a spare mainspring with all their watches. Their designs are boring as fuck too imo.

I wear it a decent amount. Not as much as my GS or SKX, but I like it.

I just say "Habring" generally.

They make like 200 watches a year, it used to be more like 50. You may see one in the wild someday.

That being said any particular model might be hard to find. Like if you wanted to see another COS Chrono like mine -- he will only make 12 a year of them or less.

A mirror polish is most definitely not a mirror polish. The image your posted does a good job of showing some of the differences. The Patek and Chopard in that image have machine cut anglage (the beveled edges you see on all the parts in the image) and you can still see the machining marks on the anglange on those two because no further work was done to refine the polish of those after they were machined.

On the Lange you can see that the anglage was polished after being machined such that it is a fairly highly polished finish. However, you can also see that the finish on the anglage on the Lange has a somewhat hazy effect to it, probably because it was polished in only one or two steps.

Finally, the Doufour has clearly had far more work put into the polish, probably including hand polishing to achieve a true mirror polish. It is clearly in another league than even the Lange.

Now, as to why this is the case, the answer is that achieving a very clear, shiny, distortion free mirror takes many more steps and much more time than roughly approximating a mirror polish. This is because the finish on metals is, at the microscopic level, a series of ridges and valleys created by the abrasive used to shape or finish the metal. Polishing metal is ultimately about replacing larger peaks and valleys with smaller peaks and valleys using successively finer and finer abrasives.

As a result of this, there is a limit to how many steps you can skip and still achieve a true mirror polish because if you skip too to fine an abrasive too quickly, that abrasive simply won't be able to replace the large peaks and valleys with the much smaller peaks and valleys of the fine abrasive in the amount of time they are spending on it.

Continued from >>60301701

An extreme example of this seen in case/dial/hands and bracelet finishing, as >>60299798 pointed out, is seen with Grand Seiko who use several steps including literal hand polishing (i.e. manually without a powered wheel) to achieve a true, distortion free mirror polish. You can see some of the polishing work they do in this video about their Spring Drive models:

Can you even get a used Zenith Pilot for that price?

Assuming you cannot get a Zenith for that price, the only sensible answer I can think of is a vintage Lemania 5100 chronograph as I despise the Valjoux 7750 and Seiko doesn't make a pilot style 8rXX.

The Lemania 5100 is probably also the truest automatic pilot's chronograph ever made as the chronograph minute and second hand are directly driven and thus the chronograph function is much more shock and g-force resistant than on virtually any other mechanical chronograph.

Well, first off you should understand that the specifications for a mechanical movement are giving the absolute maximum amount of deviation in any position that are considered within spec and which will not require a warranty paid for regulation by the maker.

Those specifications are not typically representative of the kind of accuracy most examples of that given movement will achieve, and especially not indicative of what kind of accuracy will be achieved in regular wear (because wearing an automatic regularly keeps it wound and most movements deviate more at half-wind or less than at full wind.

Most movements can also be regulated by the owner or a watchmaker to run quite a bit closer to accurate than the specification for the movement would suggest. As an example, the fairly inexpensive Miyota 9015 movement can typically be regulated to gain or lose five seconds a day or less in regular wear, which is far better than the specified accuracy.

Higher end production movements which have been adjusted and regulated better at the factory (a labour intensive process of improving the accuracy of the movement at the factory) are typically have much less positional variation (i.e. different rates in different positions e.g. crown up vs. crown down), have less isochronism (change in rate as the mainspring loses power), and change in rate less when worn compared to not worn.

These smaller deviations from the set rate of the movement mean they both tend to be MUCH more accurate from the factory but also that they can be regulated to pretty impressive levels of accuracy for a machine literally made out of springs, gears, and levers. I have two automatic watches that run very close to +0 seconds per day when worn, another two that run close to +2 seconds a day when worn.

At those kinds of accuracy levels, there wouldn't really be much of a need to set the time on the watch more than once or twice a month, which isn't really that bad.

they can be decorated (some are museum-grade), and they're extremely accurate.

Honestly 90% of the success of a microbrand is drumming up support for you kickstarter and paying worn and wound to give you a good review and all sorts of social media bullshit hype.

I mean, I've thought about it, and I'm sure if I could hire the right marketing team it could be done. But.. eh.
>>
>>60303341
actually, looks more like a 924/911 of that era
>>
>>60303307
>>60303353
I definitely don't think it would work involving several of us since most of us have pretty different tastes in watches aesthetically. I don't see how you'd even get two of us to agree on a design.

Leaving that aside, i do think there is room in the market for a microbrand to focus on using the ETA 2892-A2 and its variants at a non-ludicrous price point, as the 2892 is quite a bit better than the ETA 2824-2 and is pretty rare to see in sub-$2,000 watches.
>>
>>60303353
I'm SURE you could find a watch-obsessed WIS marketer who'd join the team

the question is -- do you have a design that the masses would love?

I'm sure you do. Most kickstarters fail of course, so you'd have be smart enough to make it succeed.
>>
>>60303420
speaking for myself, it if were a semi-affordably priced 2892-A2, I'd be all over it, and even moderately attractive, I'd be all over it.

>no dinner plate monstrosities
>maybe following design cues from a 70's Seiko?
>>
>>60303463
>I'm SURE you could find a watch-obsessed WIS marketer who'd join the team
I'm not so sure. There's a lot of time and effort that goes into making a successful social media campaign that will push thru a fulfilled kickstarter.

>do you have a design that the masses would love?
I'm sure I could design a watch within the constraints of having a Chinese company assemble the thing, like all kickstarter watches, and present in an interesting way that people would go for. I really think the stumbling block would be marketing and social media presence.
>>
>>60303518
isn't the A2 a cosc movement?
>>
>>60303530
blech can't you find a machine shop in your country to make the cases for a reasonable price? that would be a pleasant selling point (EVERYTHING'S made in china now)

>>
>>60300277

A machine shop in the USA making cases would be expensive. So would assembly of the watch.

You could do it, but there are less expensive selling points out there.

>>

Brathwaite and dan wellington, too.
>>
>>60303676
Where, in the USA? Or China?

In the USA I'd ask Weiss watch company who he's been getting his cases from and if they're finishing them too. Otherwise if you're working with a local machine shop you're just going to have to figure out what they're capable of and see what can be done and how you can get what you want.

In china, I'm pretty sure the people making the case are the same people finishing it.

Non-betas (i.e. anyone who actually has a good chance of banging random sluts whenever they go out) don't stay with a single chick for sex. Even the hottest babe in the world won't stop them from eyeing other merchandise over time.

The sex isn't as frequent or varied as it was when we first got together, but it's still pretty regular and fun (we probably average twice a week or so, whereas for the first few years it was closer to every day). Other aspects of the relationship improved and got more comfy though, which more than compensates for a little less sex imo.
>>60305862
Do you really have that much trouble telling which hour mark is which? I've been wearing analog watches so long it's basically instant to tell what time it is, to the point I would have no problems with a watch without any markings (although I think such watches look bad aesthetically).

I swapped the strap on my Zeppelin GMT watch as the fake croc strap that it came with was a bit stiff. I have it on a brown vintage strap from Watch Gecko, I have one on my SARB & it's comfy as fuck.

The watch is much comfier now, looks better too.

As an aside does anyone know why the watch would have 2 sets of lug holes on each side? It's got the set the springbars were in for the standard strap and then a set slightly higher up.

>Okay kid, whatever you say
I'm not kidding.

You could be banging the hottest woman in the world, but after a while the thought of banging some random plain-looking chick with a decent butt becomes MUCH more exciting than mounting the same broad again.

The point is: women shouldn't be able to keep you with sex. That's not how high-functioning humans are wired.
The (promise of) sex is how they get you hooked, but making you breakfast and taking care of you is how they keep you.

What's keeping me with her is the fact that she keeps a clean house, and a stocked fridge.
