I'm going by the "recognised professions" list which lists airline pilot, bank official, etc. I do see that it lists "a person of good standing in their community" but if they accept anyone like that then what's the point of listing the professions?

In a lot of countries if you still physically have the old passport and it's not expired you can personally go into the passport office and trade it in for a replacement

A renewal does not need signed and strictly speaking the old one does not need to be expired to renew it.
it's still valid for many years though so they would find it suspicious. Maybe I could claim I just want to change the photo or something.
But I don't know if just doing that without reporting the old one lost would be enough to properly block it?
