wtf is that?
>>
>>60260817
For many years dominos pizza had an internal policy of awarding a rolex to office staff who had either been there 25 years or had completed a certain amount of deals. I forget which.
Either way, it's an award.

You see them for sale. Don't know who buys them.

Someone who worked hard to get the award I guess.
They litter the net, and are (or should be) cheaper than an unmarked dial because, like I said, who would want to buy one of these 2nd hand? On the stores I look at, these things sit there for years and years in inventory, same with those gulf arab crest rolexes.
>>
>>60260910
I just looked on ebay and they only have the Domino's logo on the bracelet and case back. Are those fake?

The article anon linked shows that they abandoned the dial decal for bracelet icons. Dunno about casebacks.

my daily work watch
I use the chronograph to time how long i take a dump for at the office. I try to finish before the 5 min mark. anything over 5 mins people start to get suspicious and know you are taking a dump.

anyway, all of my watches are timex. I love timex. Eventually I want to get a nicer more expensive watch, but for now my small timex collection are my dependable buddies.

As other anon said, people who earned it.

But even I would wear one as I don't think there's any "shame" in having a Domino's logo on the watch considering it's a factory Rolex dial, and I think it would be a fun conversation piece.

Yeah it's a little tacky but I view it more on the side of interesting and unique.

The watches were awarded to general managers if their stores mainained very high sales and 5 star inspection rating for 3 months straight. I forget the dollar amount, it was high but obtainable.higher volume store managers got theirs if they really put their mind to in, lower volume stores had a tough time with it.

>>60260871
Nobody really wore them in public, they are tacky. But corporate level management wore them when they visited stores and performed the inspections. They are also worn at some business functions. Its a status symbol.

That's common; the pointing hand of the second hand is often too skinny (for precision purposes) for any good lume, and if you're in the dark you typically won't be reading time to the second anyways, since in the second indices aren't lumed.

Have a gander at the usual BWC sites and you'll see some very unhappy chappies, and a plethora of collector oldfags who have seen the decline firsthand and know what their talking about argue against thirsty nouveau riche whores who have latched on to the brand recently and will defend it to the death.

Fact: over the past 7 or 8 years Patek's production has doubled. They did this to keep up with the chinese market (but uh oh! that gravy trains slowing down! better lower them prices in slow markets! - they did in North America, last year).

Comparisons between patek's most basic movements (215/240's) shows very sloppy (relatively speaking; still miles ahead of the lower tiers of horology) finishing that doesn't compare with competitors in the high end.
There was a time when Patek didn't cheap out on their basic stuff. Apparently now they only put really effort into high end complicated models and the like.

In 2009 PP decided to no longer bother with the Geneva Seal, something they've adhered to and trumped up for like 120 years.

The seal was a mark of excellence awarded by the Canton of Geneva to watches made in the canton. The seal had to do with attaining fabtabulous levels of finishing mainly, and didn't really worry about performance.

The purpose of a lumed seconds hand on a diver is to tell in underwater darkness if the watch is running or not. I believe it's even required for the ISO diver rating.
>>
>>60264974
I'm not even surprised. They strike me as far to worried about their image and not worried enough about the underlying horologically by which that image should be earned.

Notwithstanding VC's lack of a brand identity, I do respect the concerted effort they've been making to reaffirm their horological credentials in the last 10 years.

It serves to quickly demonstrate the watch is working in dark environments but that doesn't mean you can't also measure with it. Seiko's design is fine for field watches but it makes sense less on other models.

Abandoning the Seal:

Basically, it was Patek, Vacheron and a few smaller others that had this seal for ages and ages. Along comes Roger Dubuis to fuck all of that up. Their watches got the seal too, not a problem in itself, but they basically caused its decay into worthlessness. When Dubuis was suffering in the mid 00's, they started pumping utter shit that was PRETTY, just to maintain cashflow and stay alive. Basically, watches they KNEW would fuck up pretty soon, but were finished well enough to get the seal because the seal doesn't account for performance (because it's a fucking given, isn't it?).

This degraded the reputation of the seal, and by association cheapened the other makers that did live up to the spirit of things.

Dubuis was "rescued" by Richemont at the verge of death. Apparently the final straw for Patek was when Cartier got the seal for their Ballon Bleu movement (made for them by Dubuis, a true manufacture).

Patek decided that it was powerful enough to institute its own seal, said fuck you to the canton and left.

After this the Canton decided to tighten up requirements for the seal and actually make it less prone to abuse: now not only about finishing of the movement, it included the whole watch and performance, better than COSC standards I think.

Anyway, why I mention the seal is because Patek now have no independent authority giving their shit a once over before it gets sent to the customer. Advice I keep seeing is that, if you can get a pre-patek seal variant, get that one because it's less likely to fuck up. Don't know how much credence to give that.

But now Patek apparently does all the extra QC the seal givers used to give the movements.

There are so many accounts of horrible screw ups that this cannot be the case. This is not fucking JLC we're talking about, this is Patek fucking Philippe. There shouldn't be this kind of fuckup, consistently!
>>
>>60265146
So, they double production since the abandoned any independent scrutiny of their production, but where are they going to get all these extra watchmakers from?

They don't get trained in a fortnight. People speculate that they've scavenged from their repair staff which would explain the horrific service times of months and months (and then, if you read the accounts, shit STILL comes back fucked, or worse).

So, making more watches, too many for them to handle, at worse standard so there's more service calls and because all the repairers are off busy making shit the service ques get backlogged to fuck and back.

They announced recently that they're scaling down production a bit. Hmm, could that be because that faggot CEO sees the light and that he's ruining the name of a company that's been a hallmark of horological excellence for nigh on a century? Nope, just because fewer chinks are buying them and shit just ain't moving.

I was reading a conversation between some HK collectors that were surprised that a recent Patek model (usually in demand) was so easily attained by one of their members. "Sign of the times" they called it (watch sales down in HK for 2016 by 30%, and asia as a whole is 53% of all luxury watch sales worldwide in 2016).

These accounts (and there are many more) do not inspire much confidence, in my opinion, not when such large amounts of money are being asked.

I mean, this is just online, talking with oldfags in person who are into watches and they've noticed a real drop.

JLC is worse, but then again JLC aren't asking the very highest of prices and not as much is expected of them.

I advise any anons interested in JLC to look at some of the bullshit that has occurred with them before making any substantial purchases.

Do your research, asses the risks. How many of these guys are coasting along on old reputations?

I've been lurking here for the last few weeks trying to decide on a nice dress/business watch and I've narrowed it down to these two. The look/aesthetic is most important to me but the materials and fit and finish are important, too. Anyone have any thoughts on which of these I should go with, or any recommendations otherwise? I really like the Seiko Dolce on the right but the Tissot on the left is also nice and is about 1/3 the price.

One suggested for me to look at Lange instead of Patek. I'm reading this more and more, but it's hard to see through the usual fanboism (on both sides) any enthusiast's discussion forum generates.

Indeed. I've been looking a lot closer at VC (and Lange) after reading about all this BS.

It really makes me think that haute horology really is a fool's game.

why are these shitty watches so expensive? a $10 clock will work better than these and does not require maintenance that costs thousands. theres no reason to buy a $100k clock that needs to be adjusted every month when there are much cheaper alternatives that can keep right time as long as the battery is not dead.

I've heard that, though there were problems like 15 years ago, they're better at it now, and apparently (at least in most markets) Richemont don't lump ALS together with their other brands under the same service centre. That's a plus in my eyes (do some reading on richemont service centres).

>How are VC in the QC and servicing departments these days by comparison to ALS, PP, and JLC?
I have been looking. But it's actually kinda hard because they're just not as popular and there's not as much talk about them. I've read about horrible service repuation, but that's at least a decade or more old. I can't find any more reliable info on them in the last say, 5 years. I see gripes about service times (that's not unique in the slightest) and bitching about richemont service centres (in some markets), but as for general QC? I don't see the same kind of out-of-the-box/only-one-week-of-ownership fuckery I've been seeing when looking at JLC and PP screwups.

In person: VC isn't very popular where I live, and the collector oldfags I talk to don't really care for them, so no anecdotes from that front either.

Very nice. And way, way out of range for me.

I like the way he brings a lot of information to the face without clutter. In this case, however, I don't like the date indicator (311). Using such a ring for a true cyclical feature such as GMT and lunar position would be more to my tastes.

Look up polish jobs for more expensive watches and the many problems people have had.
When getting something costly serviced, depending on condition of course, it's usually better not to request polish as there's just too many certified monkeys working at service centers these days. A bad polish job will lower the value of a nice watch, and is something to keep an eye out for when looking at 2nd hand pieces.

Here's a thread I stumbled across, and, though it's not as bad as some others I remember reading from other brands, I too would be pissed.

>a) automatics are fine for daily use and

Depends on who you are and what you do, doesn't it?

If you're posting on an inuit basketweaving whisper station and asking this question at all it's likely that you live a casual enough existence that a generally sporty watch will do you well enough 95% of your life, and for the other % it would depend on the kind of diver and the occasion in question.

Just wear whatever, nobody gives a shit anymore about anything.

Many watch collectors, especially but not limited to vintage collectors, really have an investigative and learning hobby.

People know quite a bit about history, technologies and production methods. They 'posses' more knowledge than actual watches.
>>

This is precisely why I am generally more interested in vintage watches than new watches. So I'm sort of new to this. What do I do about the servicing of a <=$150 automatic? I hear it's just not worth it and to just wear it until it dies. Is self servicing an unwise thing to attempt? What if the watch needs "regulated" when I get it, can I at least do that myself? I've always hated the idea of having to have my technology fixed or worked on by someone other than me and watches would be no exception.
I just need to know what I'm getting into before I buy an automatic watch.
>>
>>60269832
You can regulate your watch yourself without too much trouble. Having the tools to service your watch is not cheap or straightforward (particularly when it comes to lubricating the movement).
>>
>>60269832
You would have to spend quite a lot more than $150 in tools and quite a bit of time to learn how to service an automatic movement.

It simply is not practical for someone to learn solely for the purposes of servicing their own watch(es).

Are Seiko Spring Drives made to last as long as Swiss mechanical watches?
>>
>>60270059
A well-constructed, well-serviced mechanical watch will easily last a hundred years, quite possibly significantly longer.

Seiko spring drives have a longer service interval than traditional mechanical watches. Their long-term viability is at this point frankly untested, as they've only really been around thirty years. There are also concerns about future parts availability and difficulty to service - any decent watchmaker can service a basic traditional mechanical watch, whereas spring drive likely need to go back to Seiko in Japan for service.

I'd say that I expect my spring drive to last at least 30-50 years and I would not be at all surprised for it to last 100, but if I had a watch that absolutely had to work for 100 years, a traditional mechanical watch would be the way to go.
>>
>>60270059
Why wouldn't they be?
>>
>>60269880
>>60269920
Ok I didn't know the tools were that expensive. I guess I'd just decide if I want to keep it when the first service time comes. Will I probably need to regulate it when I get it. Will it ever need regulated again?
>>
>>60270227
What watch is it, and how sensitive will you be to its accuracy?

Making some wild assumptions about what watch it is, you can regulate these down to 5 or 10 seconds per day with some work (and MAYBE better than that, if you get lucky and get a better-than-average movement by chance) compared to maybe the 10 to 20 seconds per day they come stock.

I'd suggesting wearing it for a month or so before regulating it for two reasons: one, to allow anything that needs to break in to break in (this is probably a fake reason but pretend it's the real reason), and two, to allow yourself to figure out if you really need to regulate it or can live with it the way it is (this is probably the real reason, but pretend it's a fake reason).
>>
>>60270154
Thanks. Great info.

Considering Spring Drive is available mostly on Grand Seikos, which are priced comparable to Rolex, it's definitely concerning if they don't last as long since that's one of the reasons to buy luxury Swiss mechanicals. If you're going to trade permanence for accuracy, why not just go full quartz? And Spring Drives are still less accurate than full quartz watches.
>>
>>60270440
They're not as accurate as the thermo-compensated 9F movements, but many people report better than 15s/month accuracy with their spring drives. That's well within 'good accurate quartz' range.
>>
>>60270343
Well I'm not what watch yet exactly, just that it probably won't be over $150. Let's just say an snk809, since that's what it might be if and when I figure it's not too small for me. Whatever it might be I'll follow your suggestion.

Currently I have this Leijona watch (my first watch ever) and a Skagen watch. I'm planning to get a proper watch that's not too expensive. Is a Seiko SKX009 a good choice?
>>
>>60270680
It's a decent pick, just be aware that the 7S26 movement doesn't have hacking or handwinding. So if that'd bother you take a look at other pieces.

>>
>>60270788
they look like your average kickstarter brand. NH35 is a good movement. Sapphire, 100m, NH35, I would think of as a 300$-400$ watch at most, but if you like the style, hard to find anything really disqualifying about the watch.
>>
>>60270904
>they look like your average kickstarter brand

From what I've read of the guy who owns the brand, Nick, he's still in watch school. He's selling manufactured movements in custom cases, coming from a background of modifying Seiko watches, so he's got some chops.

Prices start at $400 and he does a lot of artsy stuff. Engraved cases like the one above goes for $1000. I think it's better value than a lot of German mid-range brands.

How much should you pay for a mint condition King Quartz penisquartz?

It is literally a requirement for ISO certification to have lume on the second hand. You're not actually reading the second hand, but you need to quickly, even in relative darkness, confirm that the watch is operating even just at a glance.

Also, a second hand generally has a tail, it wasn't added just for that. Have you seen many watches? They're generally not lumed though except dive watches.

On one hand each color is limited to only 2000 pieces. On the other hand it uses a shitty, entry level quartz movement, the 7N36 (the original had a way better quartz movement) and plastic case parts.

I hope Seiko realizes they dun goofed and make like a mass produced Prospex quartz model. But probably not, seeing how every Giugiaro reissue is inferior in some way to the 80's original.

Pros of using the wiki:

- Is searchable, and in a wiki full of other useful information on tech
- Has super clear formatting
- Doesn't track you
- Has page and edit history, with diff functionality
- Is a familiar interface to anyone who has used Wikipedia
- Users can find the page outside of the watch general

>>
so what do those "jewels" do in watches? not even one manufacturer explains that but everyone will always say how many jewels their watch has.
>>
>>60275271
They're used on the pivots of moving parts, due to their low coefficient of friction. Basically they make the watch last longer.
>>
>>60275258
Old alpinist looks better. That and it had a 6R15 instead of a 4R35.
>>
>>60275288
Are there less jewels on quartzes because they have less moving parts?
>>
>>60275271
A jewel is a ruby jewel. They're cut and polished, and then lubricated to provide a nearly 0-friction contact surface for pivots.
A "jewel" can only be stated if it serves a function within the watch. As dictated by swiss laws, and just accepted by others as it makes sense.
During the 1920s there was quite the explosion of watches with "56 Jewels", which just had ruby jewels splattered all over the dial.
>>
>>60275338
Generally yes.
>>
>>60275338
There can be, and tend to be in higher end quartz movements. But not in cheaper, "throwaway" quartz movements, which is 80% of them.
>>
>>60275338
yes, but a good quartz would still have a few jewels. most quartz movements have no or very few jewels.
>>
>>60269920
Is this true, though? How much time are we talking? With as much derping as you (we) tend to do about watches as a hobby, it seems plausible to me that it it could be worth it for some.
>>
>>60275326
It's not an alpinist though.
The green version just looks like the SARB017 a bit.

The SARB017 was also more expensive when it came out I think.
>>
Is there a watch that looks like this with similar materials/fit/finish to the Seiko in this pic but without the 10SPY premium? Just curious before I take the plunge ($400 shipped from Japan and doesn't really hold its value well from what I see). If I can pick up an older Seiko with a similar aesthetic I'll probably do that instead, but I'm having a hard time sorting through their older quartzes. So far I see some King Seiko and "Seiko SQ" models which look nice enough but most of them have hooded lugs which is not really to my taste. Anyone have any recommendations?
>>
>>60271717
It's an ETA 2824-2 with the best rate lowered to 21,600bph and with the balance wheel cut by laser at the factory to crudely adjust and regulate the mechanism without the usual human labor necessary.

ETA themselves regard the movement as disposable and would likely replace it in its entirety if you brought one for service. I'm not even sure if they sell parts to independents for those movements.
>>
>>60275184
This year's Baselworld was the formal global launch of Seiko's Presage line, so it is no longer a JDM line.
>>
>>60275258
A lot better than the green version.
>>
>>60275574
Just buy the Dolce. It is of far better quality than anything quartz you will get for less than $400 new and doesn't require you to learn enough about or have enough patience to find a vintage Seiko quartz in decent condition.

Well, I'm not unwilling to do this, and it's a bit fun. I'm not in a rush—just figured someone here might be able to give me a jump start. I'll probably get the Dolce, but it's fun to learn and window shop.

Will it look stupid? I think the seconds hand looks shitty and cheap. It's also a bit too prominent compared to the minute hand which makes quick glances harder.
>>
>>60275903
i have no idea if it's real or fake, but if i bought a solid gold watch with diamonds and the end links didn't fit the case i'd be pretty mad
>>
>>60275903
Magnification looks right. I also don't see any steel showing through the gold indicating it's plated.

However if you look the bezel looks notably off center which is something Rolex would never allow. Also the luminova dots look wrong. Could just be a shit custom job though, and not factory Rolex.
>>
>>60275398
If you're truly interested, look up the timezone watch school and then scrutinise their parts and tool kits for their courses supplied by Otto Frei.

When I was looking into this shit years back, it was commonly suggested that if you wanted to bother paying for one of their courses, then it would be cheaper to source to parts on a piece by piece basis from elsewhere to save some dosh.

I don't know if it's a case of the Frei part actually being quality tools etc., and just being expensive, or it's then ripping course takers off or whatever.

If you do subscribe, be sure to upload the docs and instructions here :D

Sharing is caring. I'm going to look back into it ;there may be a better alternative these days to learning a crash course on simple movement service that I don't know about (been like a decade since I bothered).
>>
>>60275903
First off, the cyclops is misaligned. Second, I don't think Rolex ever released any Presidents with diamonds on the bezel.
>>
>>60275903

>>
>>60276024
You can find similar Rolex bezels on president daydates. They are not misaligned like this one though.

The owner claims that this one is from 1992, if that helps.
>>
>>60275814
Oh, if you are actually willing to learn that's a different story. I'll see if I can dig up some useful reading material on vintage Seiko quartz watches for you later.
>>
>>60276094
>The owner claims that this one is from 1992, if that helps.

Yeah because that's definitely not an original dial. Until 1997 lumed Rolex dials read "Swiss T<25" to indicate they had a radioactive material. "Swiss Made" did not appear until the early 2000's when they switched to glow-in-the-dark Superluminova dials.

This just looks like either a fake or an incredibly shitty custom job.

Up until there early 90s I believe, faddy for jewelers to supply modded diamond dials in wacko colors to datejust/daydate models (esp ladies stuff) . That may have extended to bezels and bracelets too.

Rolex decided to tighten up their brand (no more Bond product placements etc.) in the early 90s and this is when they started coming down hard on ADs tried to pull a De Beers and strictly control retailer pricing and discounts. To help maintain brand image they also effectively disallowed these modded monstrosities by absolutely declining service to any watch that did not come to them as it left the factory. This policy stands today and many a dumbfag has been turned away because of nonstandard parts being present on their watch due to unscrupulous sellers, independent repairers or whatever (Might be Rolex parts, but if they're on the wrong model, e.g. hands, bezel, dial or whatever, then you SOL and have to go to an independent). Jewelers promptly stopped adding these decorations to the new models they sold and they're now confined to the dustbin of horological history.
>>
>>60276505
I dunno about that watch in particular, but I will just add that I think that it looks like shit.

Remember: "diamonds are a girl's best friend" . I don't care if standard models still come with diamonds "for men", the only people I see wearing them besides grills (and those are bought for them) are old gay queens: flaming homos whose halcyon days of buttfucking are long over. Crinkly and dry with gross old balls you see in the county club changing rooms, swinging by a single tendon, and festooned with liverspots, all the while the miasma of corruption and decay from having lived a life of excess surrounds them, figuratively that is; these guys usually wear really nice cologne at least.

Some of these can be cool dudes, but I dunno if you'd want to ape them.

Unless you're in that demographic, or want to be associated with it, avoid diamonds on your watch. Unless you're mainland Chinese or Arab, because you have no taste anyway and dgaf what others think.
