we've all heard about cyberpunk and cipherpunk, but here's something new:

textpunk.

That's right. Textpunk

Newspaper articles, BBSs (like this one), IRC, ASCII art, Kopipe, program source code, Novels, View HTML source, Google search engine, Mathematics, Hieroglyphics, The Rosetta Stone, Gutenberg Bible...

A textpunk doesn't sit there waiting for information to be slowly fed to him drip at a time by the gogglebox. A textpunk is thirsty for knowledge and 100% focused - they read old school hacker textfile zines. They don't waste their time with lame imageboarders: instead they're doing crazy abstract shitposting on /prog/ with thoughts and concepts twisted up so with many levels of irony that it becomes an art form.

Textpunks recognize and understand the true power of kopipe - how a well crafted piece of text can be so damn powerful that it alone can trigger thousands of replies with so much veracity within days. They see *through* things down into the core of what really counts, everything in the computer is built of text, ascii, strings of bits - They don't care about the latest 3D GUI environment fads. No, that's just a distraction. 7-bit clean ascii program source code. That's textpunk.

Look at how text has shaped humanity: The birth of writing systems was correlated with some of fastest advances of science and technology in early human history. Programming is text and it's the closest thing there is in the world to true wizardy and spell casting. Talking about real SICP-type programming here, not that modern garbage.

Today textpunks build up digital libraries of books and stick it to the copyright cartel. Schwarz, lib gen, the gentoomen library, and so many anonymous sources that tireless scan and collect books.. Textpunks are the people in tune with modern digital society of ultrafast cost-free transmission of text, they're the ones rethinking and revolutionizing publishing mixing it with open rights and making works available online.

forget saturday morning cartoons for a moment, this is nothing like that, these portrait deep themes and are a breed apart from popular anime you may see in /a/
>>
>>60264411
>everything in the computer is built of text, ascii, strings of bits

Strings of bits, that I'll agree with, because that's the lowest possible and simplest logical level - but saying "each eight bit chunk of the bit stream corresponds to one character, as per the ASCII table" is already a specific interpretation of these bits. You could just as well interpret the bit stream as 16-bit integers (signed or unsigned), floating point numbers, or just anything else by creating an n-bit table and assigning every bit pattern of length n to mean something specific. ASCII is probably the simplest while most useful, but saying that "all data is text" is just not right - open a binary file (such as an executable) in a hex editor and while there'll probably be some text strings embedded in side, many if not most of bits sequences show "garbage" when interpreted as ASCII character strings, because they actually mean something else, such as opcodes (i.e. processor instructions), numerical data, or data of yet some other kind.

Does cyberpunk have to be dystopian or can it be antiutopian?

I've recently heard people claiming that Psycho-Pass is not cyberpunk, because the society in it isn't actually dystopian.
>>
>>60266527
>>60266568
It's post-cyberpunk I'd say, as there's still questions about technology and how it changes our lifes, but the "fight" is about justice, not just punks vs the system.

>because the society in it isn't actually dystopian.
How so? The POV is elitist but we are given many hints of the states of those that do not conform to the rule. 3 of the main cast are people that fell from Heaven to Hell while still being mostly moralist.

I'm not discussing whether it's good or bad. Genocyber sucks even more, but people don't argue about it not being cyberpunk.
>>60266989
The point is that usually in a dystopia you have more of a stagnating society, with a weak, corrupt governement, corporations with too much power, people doing drugs and dying on the street etc. In Psycho-Pass the society seems more orwellian, sure it's all done by what most people would call imorral means but there's tight control and most people are unaware, but still happy.

I could only make it through a few episodes of the first season but holy shit was it bad. The main character thats supposed be a major autist but just happens to be banging hot chicks, every white guy is either a nu-male or fag, all the members of the hacking group were insufferable tropes, naming the bad company "Evil Corp". It's like the writers were making an effort to see just how bad of a show they could come up with.

>major autist but just happens to be banging hot chicks
one, whose a scag.

theres lots of numales and fags because theres lots of them in the real world. you think the things posted here about mozilla, STREAM, etc are lies? the world is gay.

ofc they were tropes, later on you find he picked them for that purpose.

e corp is turned to evil because they killed his dad. its the entire purpose for his vendetta.

Watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It ran for 2 seasons, the second one is called "2nd Gig".

If the hollywood movie was the third matrix movie, GitS: SAC is going to be like the first one, in terms of the writing, ideas presented, and cohesiveness. While I wouldn't say the hollywood movies is "bad" compared to SAC, I would say it lacks the substance of what makes ghost in the shell, truly ghost in the shell.

I actually envy you, if I could watch it for the first time again I would do it in a heartbeat :D Hope you enjoy it!

So how did you guys get fully pulled into the cyberpunk meme for good?

I've always been pretty fascinated, but it wasn't until the last year where I can finally say it's like giving my brain crack. Playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided triggered me to search for cyberpunk, and I've come to realize how it's not necessarily a genre that defines stories and aesthetics, but a whole way of life, a mindset, and ways of thinking about society, and technology. That's when I realized that /cyb/ was for me.

Basically the copycat chan thought they could force the user base to a new site because things were not going their way. They deleted the site and backups and linked to the new site from the old. This was done by mods at the time.
Now the community at lainchan org wants nothing to do with fakechan while fakechan tries desperately to generate traffic.

In essence they splintered the user base because of the egos of a few mods and everyone suffers.

Dumb nigger. If you say "wrong opinions" in Sweden with your identity not hidden, then say hello to police.
There was a story of one guy getting to jail when he posted some "wrong" ideas on facebook with his own name. If you guys have been following Tim Cast report on Sweden, people are afraid to speak out about the refugee issue. Some going as far as not showing their face and voice being mutilated so they can't be recognized.

This by itself, is why I have started to stockpile on old computers such as IBM thinkpads. In this brave new world, you can't be certain about what is going to happen next. There is no such thing as "free speech", if you declare "wrong" ideas and opinions as hatespeech which can take you to jail.

we live in a world where almost everyone carries a powerful, permanently-networked, computer in their pockets, which in turn are compromised and used for tracking and analytics by megacorps. the internet itself is increasingly compromised, and discussion of this is frequently in the mainstream media. it's generally accepted that our elections were tampered with by a foreign power's cyber-warfare unit. poor indians like, subscribe, and comment, on videos that they are paid to do this for, and then post on facebook pornography groups using their real names which is odd. pretty sure people could find something to talk about other than a youtube link to the drive soundtrack
>>

You absolutely don't want to move to Sweden, if anything you want to avoid it and those of us who live there are either considering moving or preparing to move.

10 years ago we didn't have gang-rapes and carfires and shootings and gangs openly selling drugs & throwing bricks at police if they try to interfere.

I live in the outskirts of a town that used to have about 20000 people. It's become a completely unsafe hell-hole after adding about 4000 immigrants.

Politicians and the Police have realized that they have lost control. So what are they trying to do about it? They are currently in the process of rolling out a national camera surveillance system tired to a national real-time face recognition and license plate system which is tied into a national database, you can read about it here:

http://www.dagensjuridik.se/2017/03/polisen-storsatsar-pa-kameraovervakning-med-ansiktsigenkanning-startar-i-var

That's big brother on steroids. You'll soon be unable to go anywhere but the woods without having your face scanned, recognized and your movements registered in a database. Forget about going to political rallies or anything like that, you'll be registered and flagged.
>>
>>60273164
It really is quite sad. And it won't help crime much, either. The total population was 9.5 million 3 years ago, it's now 10 after adding about half a million immigrants over those years. Immigration wouldn't have caused the very huge problems Sweden has if we were talking 0.05% or "just" 0.2% of the total population in brand new immigrants. Here we're talking 5%, which doesn't include all the immigrants who arrived in the 80s and the 90s (who mostly didn't cause problems, daily gangrapes and carfires and so on are a new thing).
>>
i dont think there are actually daily gangrapes in sweden. just saying

Years ago some people saw the future coming. I don't mean they were psychics or anything of that, I mean they new were the social and political landscape was aiming to.

These visionaries were knowledgeable people who understood the importance of technology, corporations and mass media. They came from many places like literature (William Gibson), politics (Noam Chomsky), or even videogames.

I just happen to consume the right media at the right time.

Take a look at this picture for example, to the white triangle to be more precise. When you read the contents of this RPG rulebook you understand that the authors were not seized because of futuristic credit card fraud.

Slightly disappointed in the Blade Runner 2049 aesthetic. It just doesn't seem as filthy as the first, I don't know why I feel this way. It just doesn't have the same feel of grunginess. Maybe it's because Blade Runner was like 99% props and set design and 2049 is probably CGI-fueled?

Then he launched .jp and apparently his people still inside lainchan redirected links on the site to point to .jp instead. Self study. Anyone that has any sort of aptitude for this and is/will be working in tech in the future can teach themselves faster than any college will.
Only reason to go would be for connections and if you lack self motivation.

lmao no
A degree is preferred for about any entry level IT position. If you had a connection to get into the field to begin with and gain years of experience, you may not need it. However, if you have no IT experience and no nepotism to take advantage of you need basic certs and a degree, or be seeking a degree.

Also, I will say that yes, you will learn most of what you need to know on your own and not in class.

However, unless you are taking steps like having major work to show for your time in the way of projects (git gud and develop for the Linux foundation for example), you will have nothing to show for your knowledge.

At the very least, get certs if you are in America.
>>
>>60296959
Do you have a degree? If not work on getting a degree. Some positions and some employers will care, but some will. School isn't that hard, and it's worth it in the long run. If you're a broke NEET and your parents don't file you as a dependent (or if your family is just poor), apply for the Pell Grant. All you have to do is maintain a GPA above 2.5.

I did 2 years at an affordable state college out of high school, then took 2 years off and filed as an independent once I turned 22. I then transferred to a decent University in my state with an Information Systems program, and Pell paid most of my tuition. I ended up only taking out about 2k in loans, which I paid back in a few months and already had mostly covered with savings.

Also, I got free money from Obama by the way of the American Opportunity act. Basically I got a $2k tax refund for going to school.

There is no reason to not go to school imo. It's a great experience either way, and the connections you make are invaluable.
>>
>>60297316
you've got fuark-ton of reading to do. that said, nothing can reach you more than getting your hands dirty. get nmap, and scan your own network for starters. also, scan the IP address of your own cable/DSL modem and save the results. see what you can do to improve your own security at home, and focus extra effort on your personal mobile devices.

I agree, this is information that could be missed that is actually important.

Just like the Human Trafficking Prevention Act. It sounds harmless and just, but when you read the actual act it can easily be twisted and misused by a politician.

To put it in laymen terms, in portion it talks about making child-porn, revenge porn and "obscene content" illegal. Again, sounds good and just, but the problem is, does not give details on what is considered "obscene". Leaving it up to who ever is in charge to declare whatever "obscene".

>>

Yeah, I guess so. Hopefully they wouldn't be weird about me having two accounts or anything, either, if that's the case.

Now the only question is, do I go for protonmail.com, or protonmail.ch?

New version of 9front is out: http://ninetimes.cat-v.org/

The small size leaves little room for back doors. The limited deployment makes it a low priority target.

So if you want to hone those /sec/ credentials, why don't you join and review code from a /sec/ point of view?

Maybe try a hackerspace instead?

im very glad i discovered this general. I love cyberpunk been listing to 2814's album all day today ever since seeing the blade runner 2049 trailer it sparked my flame and love of cyberpunk again
>>

That's a killer album to be fair, I keep forgetting it exists which is a shame.

yup

Estonia, cyberpunk country or not?
>>
>>60316680
imo cyb countries are the ones where a large divide between generations exists in terms of technical knowledge and where a large growth of modern infrastructure is taking place that is outpacing the society's ability to adapt
>>
>>60316720
so japan?
>>
>>60317048
I suppose Japan fits into that description but parts of Eastern Europe are what really fits the bill in my opinion:
-small corrupt governments that are completely disconnected from the sophistication of technology that is bringing sweeping changes to the newer generations
-modern infrastructure being laid out, cheap networking and computing without bureaucratic tape and heavily embedded industry taking away user freedom
-remnants of street culture from Soviet era combined with high tech lifestyle made possible by hardware that keeps getting cheaper
-access to opportunities in the global virtualspace that would otherwise never have been realized from your bleak apartment block
-interesting cityscape, ,large amount of old architecture being retrofitted and stylized due to modern needs

I always considered Hong Kong more cyberpunk, especially if we're talking aesthetics.
>>
>>60317242
true. Tokyo is too clean Hon Kong has that dirtyness
>>
>>60317259
Plus, Kowloon was in Hong Kong. You know how much inspiration cyb gets from Kowloon.
