I have this shitty laptop that overheats easily that I use when i'm away from my desktop, which OS and DE would you run on it? Currently with Mint MATE, as you can see
pretty much any distro + xfce

This, or Lubuntu

Isn't MATE almost as light as xfce?
Peppermint

I think Xfce might be a little lighter. But Lubuntu is the best choice, which is I why I mentioned it.

i have virtually same laptop, core2duo with 2 gigs. Don't really use it much.
I actually put Mint MATE 32 bit on it to replace the crusty Windows 7 it had. It worked fine, but since I already had an Ubuntu MATE desktop and a Mint Cinnamon laptop I put Manjaro Xfce on it to try a pacman distro on bare metal.
to be honest... it worked fine with Mint MATE, Windows 7 and Manjaro Xfce
I have used it for maybe 20 hours since I got my newer laptop and most of those 20 hours were just configuring and fucking around with the OS. just an emergency shitposting machine if I break my newer laptop or some nigger steals it

forgot to comment that the Manjaro Xfce uses less than 400 mb ram chilling so maybe try out Xfce, whether it's Xubuntu or Arch or whatever since you only have 2 gigs of ram it will free up some memory and probably perform a little better
>shitty laptop
Ubuntu/Antergos with i3
if you want to go as light as possible, you can do gentoo, arch, or ubuntu server. gentoo may be a pain with the compilation times, but programs run faster when you compile them from source. i don't know if that performance gain is enough to justify the compilation time though

also, forgot to mention slackware, that's a good minimalist distro

yes. If mate is too heavy for you, xfce will be as well. Get any distro with LMDE.
