Anyone ever fucked around with balloon radio probes?
I've read people have received signals from 10mW transmitters from over 500km away using pretty primitive data protocols.
Seems like a good way to transmit data over ridiculously long distances without needing any licenses.
I calculated that it would take about 10 regular-sized "carnival" balloons to carry a 100mW lora modem, the battery needed for an hour of air-time,and the rest of the tech. That's about 100$ tops.
I live too close to airports.

nobody's gonna see it if you do it at night
just don't put any lights on it
my local laws only ban rc crafts and kites near airports, they say nothing about balloons
Don't they eventually just pop from altitude? They don't last very long at all.
No idea how useful it would be.

Call it an overactive conscience, but I actually respect the expectation that I not play at altitude around passenger aircraft.

Ordinary latex and foil balloon make it to about 5 miles altitude before popping. That's a pretty decent height and the transmitter would be able to cover an area several hundred miles in diameter.

Ok but what's the point of doing this? What are you going to achieve?

It could be a fun experiment. I also heard stories of such balloons being used to send emergency messages by the military during the Yugo wars. Idk if it's true but it would make sense since a line-of-sight uhf link would be much more reliable for the purpose than hf radios.

I guess, don't spend that much money though.
