Actually, Unix is indeed an old system, but UNIX is a trademark, you can get an UNIX cert to make your operating system - whatever it is - an UNIX cerified operating system. Afaik only two GNU/Linux systems and macOS got such a cert.

MacOS drivers are still stuck on OpenGL 4.1, and before that they were stuck at 3.3 for ages. Also, no support for Vulkan on OS X while GNU/Linux has had support from the start.
