>friend is going to build new computer
>starts talking about which CPU to get
>says he needs one with a high clock speed because if it is higher it means that it is better than any other CPU that has lower clock speed

How can I even explain to them how wrong that is if they actually believed that? Is there even any ground to start on?
>>
It is hopeless. Neck him.
>>
Show him AMD cpus.
>>
>>60239226
Tell him hes generally right but it also depends on the model. Newer is more effiecient generally. 3.5Ghz haswell is better than a 4.0Ghz sandy bridge.
Also tell him amd is shit.
>>
well you could start from your own dissection of the meme that

"clock speed is a measure of how fast the computer performs work"
>>
>>60239226
Higher numbers are better has been the state of computer parts marketing for > 1 decade now.

And sure enough, a good bunch of higher numbers WERE better, but actual context always was hopeless to bring to most people.

People do not understand computers. I mean, how would they, most don't even have the very basics of understanding computers covered.
>>
>>60239226
Tell him
Overall Speed = Speed * Clock Frequency
>>
>>60239226
tell him i have a 3.2GHz pentium 4 for sale. it cost me 300 bucks, but i could give it to him for 200
>>
>>60239273
Pfttt I have a Pentium that clocks to 5Ghz, he can have it for $50
>>
>>60239226
just let him buy a FX9590
>>
>>60239226
Show him a modern Xeon benched against a Pentium 3
>>
>>60239226
What does work on a CPU? Transistors, right?

Clockrate is how fast the transistors turn on and off, right?

So would you rather have 1 million transistors at 4 ghz, or 2 million transistors at 3.7 ghz?

Greater clock speed is only relevant when comparing about equal number of transistors and about equal configuration of transistors.
>>
>>60239712
also would you rather have 1 million transistors put together by a dumbass at 4ghz, or 1 million transistors put together by a genius at 3.7ghz?
>>
>>60239267
>Overall Speed = Speed * Clock Frequency
you mean IPC * Clock?
>>
Tell him that he is right and that Intel ME is basically antivirus built into the chip
