Seeding edition, EDITION

This thread is for the discussion of the possible replacements for Nyaa.se

News
>Thanks to the new Uk streaming laws nyaa is taken down by his founder. No database was left.
>Some anons in the last thread actually believed that you could put a bitcoin miner inside a .mkv or a magnet. Everyone went nuts. It was confirmed that it was just a stupid bait.

How do you plan to handle trusted and A+ status on torrents? Trusted status alone put some sub groups easily above the others.

Why don't you just write some simple scraping script to do your searches for you?
>>
>>60237991
not him, but making a terminal version first is excellent for a couple reasons
>allows valuable developer time to go more towards important features than looks
>very, VERY easy to make a gui wrapper when main features are implemented
>can separate the mainline developers from those who want to develop interfaces, and streamline the entire feature->gui process

Sure, this may not work best for a big company with an army of developers, but it's great for tiny projects.

Don't worry about using the terminal version as an end user, it's basically GUARANTEED that some autist will develop a frontend for whatever platform you use.

Remember tox? Yeah the project failed in the end, but we had great windows, mac, linux, ios, and android clients all maintained separately by different developers and kept in sync with the backend. This development scheme actually works.

To whenever IPFS guy I have been talking comes back (or anyone else knowledgeable), thinking back earlier another anon suggested using OpenPGP to verify data.

I haven't really touched PGP, but reading up on it would see viable to have to verify uploads, say if Commie uploaded and sent the pubsub out they could sign the data. Using PGP will also give us the web of trust where other nodes can trust uploaders for better verification. The only problem I can see with this is then having to rely on a keystore, which is not a decentralised thing, would there be a benefit to using this or not or does ipfs provide something similar?
>>
>>60239126

Yeah, I forgot how it applied to the software/games categories.
>>
I have to say these past couple days have been the most proud moments of /g/
>>
>>60239271
OpenPGP is okay, but there is no reason to assume people would use it now when they haven't used any *PGP for the > decade it could have been used.

Software wise, it's probably not entirely the right tool for the job anyhow.

> web of trust
Precisely this method has been what people DIDN'T want to do.

In general the thing that worked for most people was just and only "automatic" trust. Certificate from "authority" (even a ridiculously unverified one from the user's point of view, look at all the accepted certificates in an average OS) signs certificate of legal entity or domain, and then everyone trusts that without ever investing any effort.

More effort than no effort and people will not use it.

The other variant to this in use is "just" random persons inventing a signature key and signing their stuff without anyone else guaranteeing they're who they claim they are, which for reasons almost too evident works just as well in general.

IPNS is basically doing that variant for IPFS.

I know with IPFS we can just check their PeerID but if they their server happens to be taken down (assuming it's being hosted somewhere else) there isn't really a way to verify them anymore.

So far I have my program generate a key that the owner can save to his computer locally which works for publishing for IPNS (I believe), but with pubsub it will only send the PeerID along with the message of course there is no way to supply an additional key as far as I can tell.

EU law isn't everything. You know where modern international copyright started?

That said, the much more US-based push to make copyright worse than a murder-piracy gorillian dollar heavy robbery heist rape isn't carrying in Switzerland so far (and if law is somewhat sane, where is the fun for RIAA or anyone else to sue private people, they're not after $20 license fees) - but that doesn't mean you can strongly interfere with "the normal commercial exploitation of a work", I'm pretty sure.

I mean, everyone and their dog who get into fansubbing want to sub the popular series. Obviously they don't start there (I know, I've tried). But they actually manipulate which series get subbed and which don't? Isn't this done on a popular demand basis?

The fansub groups that make them up are huge and popular. Ever since CR came around, a lot of the smaller groups died so they pretty much have the say on how things get subbed. The fact that they have the similar opinions on how things get subbed and the fact that they have relatively close ties to each other pretty much helps in developing the suspicion that there is a cartel.

>And what does this controlling actually do in action?

Well for example, they control which shows get ratted A+ quality status and which don't.
In fact, more than this, if they dislike you as a fansubber for some reason, they will exclude you from hosting any of your subs and will label you as re-encoder, or in the worse scenario, ban you into obscurity.
Other aspects also include complete monopoly of most codec-packs and shilling the one they consider to be their favorite as the only one you should be using, such as CCCP.
And also, deciding on what is the best codecs themselves to encode and force their chosen standards onto the community, such as the Hi-10profile and soon the 2.65HEVC.
To complement all of this, they also have the direct control of the best quality and available RAW's possible for the shows they select, which they never share and always keep to themselves in their inner circles. And yes, this also includes the new way, which no one has found out yet, they have of getting FULL-HD quality Amazon rips for the current shows airing this Season.
As a side note, they are also notorious shitposters and take part in extreme combined cyclejerking private sessions.

Anime and manga is fiction, not some sort of academic literature or business documents. It's primary goal is to entertain, not to give Japanese linguistic lessons to foreigners. As such, it should be translated with functional equivalence in mind, period.

Like just consider for a moment something with a lot of jokes. Then consider the fact that nothing kills a joke faster than having to explain it. A comedy show where every single joke was translated "literally" and explained in notes would be basically taking a dump all over the whole idea of it being a comedy show.

People in general really underestimate the impact of script quality when it comes to actually enjoying a piece of media, and this very much applies to translations. A subpar translation can easily ruin a script that was very well written in its original language, especially when you're dealing with languages as distinct as Japanese and English.

That said, if anons like >>60240574 get the index / tracker itself working fine enough for "everyone" that would use something like nyaa entirely on IPFS, that would surely be great.

But regardless if that fancy stuff might happen or if it's just a conventional index like nyaa - a regular dump of the public index information does not have any complex prequisites or require any particularly huge efforts by anyone.

We really merely need to successfully lobby for the next chinese cartoon index to do it regularly, he can set up a five-ten line script, and it probably solves the biggest problem in this Nyaa disaster adequately. (Also, it'll make it even more pointless to try and take down his tracker).

The aim is to not make it complex. At the moment my plan is to have release groups have their own node that has a json file of all their releases (did a test before and added a bunch a junk 42,300 which is roughly the amount of files HS has on the pantsu site and the file ended up being about 32MB). The nodes will also use the pubsub feature of IPFS to notify anyone listening of new releases in real time rather than polling the 30MB database every couple of minutes.

The client application will be another series of nodes, separate from the release groups, where you can add specific groups from their IPNS hash that you find from somewhere. When you add a new group it'll request the releases.json and add all their releases to a local database (it also cross checks the json on every launch) and from then on it'll listen to pubsub for new releases.

We had talks of including a web ui (hosted in IPNS) that could query data using javascript and pubsub with a series of search bots which are basically the client apps but public. This saves people from having to download a massive database or having to keep up with different release groups, etc. If somebody wanted they could also put a site like Nyaa or Pantsu that is actually on a web server that can act as indexer too.
>>
>>60240792
Have you ever seen an ecchi show?

I think the recent EU ruling about concerning was about Kodi boxes being sold with some piracy software preinstalled. It didn't seem to have to do anything with torrenting at all. nyaa just became paranoid and shut it down voluntarily.

This is the original japanese:

>貴方は余計な事をしないの^がv仕事よ <threateningly holds knife>
(Your job is not doing anything stupid. <threateningly holds knife>)

(note: 仕事 is pronounced しごと)

Japanese has pitch accent. This is described by indicating which syllables have a downstep after them. I marked where the statement has relevant up- and down-steps in pitch with ^ and v.

Japanese particles like の and が generally don't have any downstep. So why the weird up and down step? Because prosody.

But this was exaggerated. It turns out you can make a very awful pun out of this:

>貴方は余計な事をしない逃しごとよ <threateningly holds knife>
(Grammatically bad, but "to set me loose to do unnecessary things" can be forced in there)

逃す is a verb basically meaning to make/let something run away/get away. It's pronounced のがす. 逃し is a form of it that can act as a noun or to link statements or verbs, basically an infinitive. The downstep is after the が.

Basically the character accidentally said something that can be construed as a pun, even though it's not a real pun and there's no room to interpret it that way. The english translation is basically a bad attempt to replicate that. Or it could have been an accident. The translator might not have known this was a possible interpretation of the scene. We don't know, since they didn't translate the original possible joke.

And this is only a possible joke, I have no idea whether it was intended or whether japanese viewers would pick up on it. But the <threateningly holds knife> still fits the translation, and there's no direct contradiction in meaning, with or without the original possible joke.

Again, I don't actually think this joke is intended or would even be picked up, but it's a very good example that you can know more than enough japanese to understand normal messages without knowing enough to understand jokes.

At the moment it's its own application and I'd imagine it always will be. The client application will have a webui for ease of use, which makes it entirely possible for one to expose this and create a site like Nyaa using IPFS as the backend, but then if that site had to go down the issues would be finding another indexer. The benefit to running the client yourself is that you will always be your own indexer.

>all it really does is concatenate these json with pubsub "diffs" and then presumably generate the actual transformed data
Basically. On initial load of the client app it'll scrape the releases.json for all releases where it'll check for new releases and add them to a database. It'll do the same thing when you add a new node to your database. After that it'll listen over pubsub for new realtime releases and add to your database. It's up to the user then to download whatever releases they want from their database.

Nyaa entirely on IPFS/Zeronet/Gnunet is trivially possible from a technical standpoint. There is one big problem though. Search only works if you download the entire database.

>>60238413

>>
>>60240802
How are you going to solve the problem when a bad node intentionally returns false results? Since we have the full titles verifying it by querying the index is possible but there is no way to detect missing entries and the bad node can still cause a DOS.
>>
>>60238932
or you can add a padding on non index pages
anyway I can't tell since the site is offline
>>
>>60241844
In the end product you should only add nodes to your database that you trust. It's the same issue as people putting false torrents onto TPB except here you'll be able to control which nodes will be sending you releases.

When a node sends data over pubsub it also sends that node's peerid which is unique to them, simply verify that the pubsub was from a node in your database and add the data.

>there is no way to detect missing entries
>bad node can still cause a DOS
What do you mean by these?

For the first one you can just get the subscribed nodes releases.json for data which could easily put into a timer every x minutes or something. Unless you mean something else.
>>
>>60241844
it happens in IRC quite frequently and they just kill the node
>>
>>60241919
Adding onto this, could also have a recent_releases.json or something like that has the most recent 50 releases or something like that so you don't have to grab the 30MB file every time you'd instead get a tiny file, basically RSS (which it already kinda is)
>>
>>60240802
Why aren't you creating an index that only contains the titles? The total size of HS titles plus an 8 byte identifier is only like 3MB without the "[HorribleSubs]" and "[720p]", "[1080p]" it's closer to 2MB.

If the shows themselves were tagged it could be even smaller because searching keywords doesn't even require an index.
>>
>>60241625
I do get the idea of using pubsub for diffs, I get the idea of designing an aggregator for these to work between services and handle updates.

What I don't really get is why it'd be an application that stores json into a local database that is then supposed to be queried by some final thing.

Wouldn't it be far more... redeployable and usable if this was just a script that just handled the fetching of JSON, and optionally directly produced JSON->HTML & RSS or whatever transformations directly for direct users of the data?

If someone in the end wanted the data in a db like thing to run more difficult queries fast they'll probably feed it into Spark, Cassandra or something else their super awesome cloud is internally running on, no?

They'd just want the appropriate JSONs thing handed to them - they'd then presumably feed the DB themselves.

Or I'm maybe very much misunderstanding something.
>>
>>60241919
If you let any untrusted node do the searching then you can stilly verify if the results exist and locally check whether the titles match your query.

When a bad node gives you garbage results you can ignore it and query another node but what if more than 50% of nodes are bad?

Database:
ABC1
ABC2
ABC3

Example: user searches for ABC

Bad node returns
ABC1
ABC2
ABC4

user checks ABC1 exists, good
user checks ABC2 exists, good
user checks ABC4 exists, bad

the user will now query a different node

Another bad node returns
ABC1
ABC3

user checks ABC1 exists, good
user checks ABC3 exists, good

The user can't know the results are incomplete.

You do realize >貴方は余計な事をしない逃しごとよ
makes no sense, right?
Like not just gramatically but nobody uses nogasu in that way ever.
Letting your emotions loose or whatever does not ever use the verb, that is an english expression.

1. you let something escape. set something free. (eg. a prisoner) (same as nigasu)
2. you fail to seize/catch something. (eg. opportunity)
3. (attached after renyoukei verb) should have done something but you did not, unintentionally or intentionally. (minogasu etc)
are the only uses of the verb.

I undestand it must be hard as fuck for english only people to differentiate between language-specific things but one way you can learn is by reading definitions for everything in japanese instead of english, because they cover all different uses of the word (you can safely assume any unlisted use you can think of is an english-only expression).

In general, anime will blatantly show you through visual or audio cues when there is some sort of pun. In particular, gabdrop is not a deep philosophical show aimed at adults-only, its very clearly all-ages so it will make sure even a braindead teenager can understand if there is a pun.

To be clear there was no pun there at all. I watched the episode before, she said it with emphasis because satania always does dumb shit. No secret hidden pun to make by jumbling words around.

Also outside of /jp/ not many people know shit about japanese so you should be wary of that. English communities in general etc. Anyone can feel good by showing off to people that don't know anything, but in the end that doesn't mean anything at all.

Nuances and language-unique things are something a lot of anime translators miss - which isn't surprising since they don't get paid shit (even with jobs), and translators with actual skill do much more advanced jobs. That's just a side statement but yeah good luck.

Yes, you may use your IPFS your aggregator client application (feels like it should be a script...) to make sure only differences are pulled as efficiently as possible & verify that the data is correctly formatted.

Sure, sure.

But why doesn't it then hand the actual consumers (which would be databases on websites or website generator scripts or whatever) the current diff.json or full.json for the service(s) queried. Or produce a usable HTML / RSS feed for subsequent consumption in a torrent client (maybe either or both on demand)?

Why is there a "db" it feeds into?

So you can query your data? What other reason would there be. While the client listens for new releases you can search your own database for releases via the web ui, if a new release gets added in the background you'll it popup in the webui under recent releases or something like that.

Honestly I think this is now moot. We should try to make a decentralized system that doesn't rape a centralized server with multiple RSS requests per client.

This should be the official Transmission DHT node. In torrent files, nodes can be added like this (see pic). There's probably a way to do it with magnet links too, but someone needs to find what is the syntax that needs to be used with magnets.
Imagine how faster DHT could become if every torrent from nyaa had embedded informations on DHT nodes.

I just didn't understand what that component was ultimately intended to do. I think I get the what you have planned better now.

> So you can query your data?
Technically, for a single user on localhost there is no problem running just about any query on JSON (the local up-to-date copy after the aggregator component has pulled them).

Anyhow, not that I object to you using a db, even one that you store persistently, in your end user client thing.

But you should really design the aggregation software functionality that keeps downloading the downloads JSON and diffs over pubsub and then verifies and provides the result (as merged JSON, just the current diff JSON, maybe a CSV or HTML or RSS or whatever) as easily reusable JavaScript or Python script or something that other entities can use on their web servers and everywhere.

Else good luck selling the idea that they should make an effort to publish JSON in your desired format on IPFS with pubsub in the first place.

("And if you run my desktop application as client and then go through its DB, you can even USE the data you and others provided!" <- interest by torrent site owner or release group probably zero at this point).
>>
>>60242503
Unless your torrent client is a virgin it should already be boostrapped in the network and have a cache of DHT peers.

That nodes thing is just an addition so the client can directly connect to a peer without the need for DHT or trackers.
>>
>>60242789
>Unless your torrent client is a virgin
Although it's rare, it can happen if you don't torrent stuff often (or have cleared the cache).
Still, I tried searching the syntax and looks like magnet URI don't have anything for nodes sadly.

In torrent files, the nodes' informations look like this:

5:nodesll12:123.45.67.89i1234 (EoF)

123.45.67.89:1234

With a regex script probably all torrents on a single site could be updated at once. Some bittorrent clients have few nodes so potentially it could help a lot adding more. I don't know if ut uses the transmission node for example, surely it uses the bittorrent inc and utorrent official nodes.
