only difference between remembering "select text and Control+C" and for example "v3Ey" is that you have to know more "shortcuts".

You can also do that in "normal" editor by Shift+Control+->(3times), as you can see it would be slower than in vim because you need to take your hands from home row to navigational keys and simultaneously pressing Ctrl+Shift with left hand. Even Emacs binds are better than this.

Vim's shortcuts are great mnemonics.
For example what the other anon wrote: "v3ey"

v - VISUAL mode (one of vim's modes)
3e - THREE times: goto the END of the next word
y - YANK the selected text
