regular browser: usually less than 50. 10-20 per topic, close them when I'm done, not when I run out of memory.
porn browser: currently 15 tab groups with 50-150 tabs in each, some are open since last year.

It's eating my tabs, reordering them, drawing pinned tabs at the weirdest places and all kinds of stupid shit.

On average, about 8. And that's when I have a few interesting threads open or when I'm actively researching something.
When there's nothing going on, it's probably about 2 or so.

To answer OP's question, when I have to scroll to see any other tabs I might have opened, I bookmark them until I can work with them.

I like to work on one thing at a time, which is why I don't have a shitload of tabs open like most of you hyperactive motherfuckers with low attention spans and no organizing skills.

Usually 20-40. I have a separate window for every category of websites and 4chan boards. I'll need to reopen anything again when I reboot. This helps to prune unnecessary tabs if you can't even remember them.
