So after a few months of deliberating, checking requirements and using a live operating system to make sure everything was water tight I've not successfully moved to lubuntu.

fedora is a community distribution of gnu+linux with support from red hat. it gets the newest red hat software (rawhide), which later goes into rhel, a commercial distribution (with tech support)

For NixOS

are the hashes used to basically say:
"If you don't produce this exact hash from your current runtime environment then you won't even be able to locate this program"
Basically meaning that it's a way to guarantee you're using the same environment every time you run something or it fails?

Or do you just execute a program and the hashes somehow allow the program to locate exact versions of every dependency it needs?

The Arch wiki is made specifically for arch and arch is made specifically to be build like that.

The learning curve will be much smoother if you are not trying to adapt the arch wiki to, say, debian.

There is no other distro with documentation as good as arch's. The second bests are ubuntu/rhel and they don't even come close.

I'm not an Arch user.

>Debian is the same shit if you use a netinst, for example.
It's not. Netinst is not made to build a complex system upon. It's made for people that only need a basic set of software. Such as most servers.

>You also know arch's docs are mostly applicable to any other distro, too.
As long as the other distro has somewhat the same packages, versions of the packages and the same package structure/nomenclature.

>You're also ignoring the gentoo wiki, which is where alot of archwiki was taken from.

Again, bullshit
None of these things being "specifically made for x" matter. Make an actual argument about the practical reality of whatever you're talking about if you're going to say its better for something. Don't appeal to some vague notion of it 'being specifically designed to work with [whatever]' with no further explanation.
Debians normal install is a complex system. Debian stable is literally the same fucking system, just with only the barebones. Debian netinst is exactly the fucking same as arch, gentoo, void, etc in regards to the DIY start with a minimal syystem and set up your own enviornment shit. In my experience with all of those afformentioned distros, at least.
As well, I've only ever rarely had problems with archwikis documentation using void or debian. Most of the time its just as applicable. The hypothetical notion that there could potentially end up being incompatability if it used a different software version or shipped a different configuration never fucking manifested.

I dont hate arch by the way. Ive used and liked it too. But literally nothing about it makes it "good for learning" compared to any other 'diy' distro, and when people constantly say 'arch helps you learn' it seems like they think those are features of arch, not just features of minimal distributions/minimal installations. Its like fucking calling Ubuntu "Linux," as though there were no other distros and you didnt need to be any more specific.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Gnome devs are irredeemable faggots who want to pretend there is no enviornment other than gnome. They dont like themes because they undermine the gnome "brand."
The KDE filepicker is great and theres a version of firefox that uses it maintained by opensuse I think.
You're supposed to just use a compositor to stop tearing though, arent you, like compton? I dont know if it doesnt totally fix it since I dont use it, since I dont care much about tearing, but thats what I Hear people say.

Fedora is pretty fucking bare bones ootb. And Arch doesn't split packages, if you install all of the same programs on both, Arch will be more bloated even though it will show fewer packages. Okay, let's start slowly. Did you actually install it or do you use a live version? Can you tell the difference?
Did you install it alongside your fresh windows 7 installation or did you replace one with the other?
Did the installation process ask you about SWAP? What did you choose?
Can you tell what GPU driver you're running with? If you changed nothing, you're probably running with nouveau (the other guys called it nouvideou/nouvideo4u as a joke) which might be a bit slower than a proprietary driver. You might have to replace that one to speed it up.

> so they can feel better about themselves
Yeah, but you're making up their motivation for your own explanation, don't you? But I'm with you, so let's roll with that assumption. Where you see need for confirmation as a bad thing, I see it as a good one. This guy has something he wants you to use in order to confirm his own "right" choice and feel good about it. If he himself thought it's hot garbage, he wouldn't offer it to you unironically. He'd have to hide it instead, like a dirty secret.

Sure, the offer can be annoying to you, but that's your response. Unless proven otherwise, the offer didn't happen out of malice. He wants you to use the not shit stuff he uses too and offers it. So my question is what's bugging you so much about this process that you can't blend it out? Should he restrain himself more? Should he not mention it at all? Under what circumstances is it okay to advertise the free stuff he didn't even make himself?

I work at a language centre and have been trying to get the mgmt to allow me to install a lite distro like linux on all the PCs. These generic Dell PCs are slow as it is on Winblows, and the tech illiterate teachers get viruses on 'em all the fucking time. I don't see why it'd be a bad idea considering they only use the PCs to open audio/video files and surf the internet.

Distro like xubuntu*
>>
>>60210251
I think it's a great idea. I like suggesting GNU/Linux to my apex normie friends and family, because if literally all they do is use a browser and play movies or something, and literally never install new programs, gnu/linux works much better than windows. Plus, they have freedom and no more windows botnet.
>>
>>60210300
Except for maximum normie conformity they also need Flash Player, access to Netflix etc which take away their freedoms again.
Also normies play video games now, what about that? It's what's keeping my sister from switching to Xubuntu right now.

Anyone tried Manjaro i3? Is it worth it or should I just go for Arch?

GNU/linux is pretty bad for mainstream games like GTA, ubisoft games and other "AAA" $60 games with good graphics, but they're all shit now anyway. It has a ton of games on steam and gog, as well as a huge array of emulators allowing you to play basically any game from older consoles.

GNU+Linux has many fully libre/free games, such as Tux Racer!
>>
>>60210364
Hey, *I* don't need it, but normies "need" it badly enough that for them, it's a dealbreaker when they consider switching to GNU/Linux. It's stupid but hey, we're talking about normies here.

>>60210392
>>>>>>>>consoles
If you're into older PC games like my sister is, you're stuck with either Windows or Wine (just as cancerous and too inconvenient for normies). Game bugs out in Windows? Oh well, the game is just badly programmed. Game bugs out in Wine? LINUX IS BAD AND ANON SHOULD FEEL BAD FOR RECOMMENDING ME THIS JUNK.

>>60210452
Hey, I'm fully content with Nethack, Anonymine, 2048, supertuxkart and OpenMW. But normies want to play [mainstream game only available on Windows here].

I have a script named myscript that does
exec myprogram $@

How do I prevent
./myscript "hello world"

from doing
exec myprogram "hello" "world"

instead of
 exec myprogram "hello world"
?
>>
>>60210999
a) >>60210739
b) use quotes "$@"
c) alway use quotes
d) whatever happens, even when you're just using numbers, use quotes
e) use quotes, always
>>
>>60211023
Wouldn't using
exec myprogram "$@"

turn
./myscript hello world

into
exec myprogram "hello world"
?
>>
>>60211044
Yes, and that's precisely what you want right?
>>
>>60211073
Nope. I want
./myscript hello world
to be
 exec myprogram hello world

and
./myscript "hello world"
to be
exec myprogram "hello world"
.
I can't seem to find the right keywords to find what I want on searx.

how do i make gnome behave like windows?

How about you start with the basics of shell scripting and what arguments are.
>>
>>60211211

>>
>>60211198
Install KDE
>>
>>60211253
no i dont want to install x
>>
>>60211243
$ cd /tmp
$ echo '#!/bin/bash
#myscript
exec touch /tmp/"$@"' >> myscript
$ cat myscript
#!/bin/bash
#myscript
exec touch /tmp/"$@"
$ chmod u+x myscript
$ ./myscript "hello world"
$ ls -l hello*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 anon anon 0 Mai 4 16:25 hello world
$ rm "hello world"
$ ./myscript hello world
$ ls -l hello* && ls -l world*$ ls -l hello* && ls -l world*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 anon anon 0 Mai 4 16:27 hello
-rw-rw-r-- 1 anon anon 0 Mai 4 16:27 world

Use quotes.
Why? When you call
$ ./myscript "hello world"
the shell substitutes hello world (as a single word) for "$@" which gets passed to (in this case) touch. When you call
./myscript hello world
the shell substitutes hello world (as two words) for "$@" which get passed to touch.
>>
>>60211515
Thanks anon. It doesn't make sense to me but I'll try to remember this behavior.
>>
>>60211590
I recommend reading up on the basics of substitution on http://wiki.bash-hackers.org.
Also I just realized that my script here >>60211515 will actually only create the first file in /tmp, and all following files in the current working directory. In the example it didn't matter because /tmp WAS the pwd but it would make a difference in other directories.
