What's your CPU & GPU history like /g/?

It's been years since I've upgraded so I think it's th perfect time to modernize my system.

I had severe coil whine on my R9 290X and I wanted CUDA again for media creation, plus I made around $250 cash in "down-grading" to the GTX 980.

>And downgrade a 4 GB Classified to a 2 GB card?
Yeah that was kinda dumb of me but I was forced to. The GTX 680 CLASSIFIED was physically too big for my NCASE M1. Though again, I did make around $200 for the downgrade. Bought the CLASSIFIED for $400, got the MSI for $200.

I'm running pic related now and it never goes above 3GB in the most memory intensive cases.

Was sad to see the R9 290X go because I got it for a bargain. It was a reviewer's test sample, used it for a couple of days then sold off for other GPUs to review. I also really got lucky with the GTX 980 too. Seller was desperate for money so offered him cold hard cash for decent discount.

this
the 980 still destroys most games unless you insist on using ultra everything in some of the more unoptimized games

I'm thinking about building a Ryzen + Vega build (1700 + fastest Vega), I'm tired of laptops.

CPU:
> Core 2 duo (Desktop)
> Core i3 3xxxM (Ultimate downgrade)
> Core i7 4770HQ (fucking beast)
I really want Ryzen tho

>Pentium + matrox
>P4 + ?
>Xeon gen 1 + some 0.5gb nvidia card

Since I started building my own machines?

So far it looks like this:
>CPU
>2011 - present: AMD Phenom II x6 1100T

>GPU
>2011 - 2017: AMD Radeon HD 6990
>2017 - present: AMD RX 480 (nitro)

That's it. Haven't needed to upgrade my CPU at all until now (price / performance finally makes sense). Planning on an AMD R7 1700x in a new build soon / now (looking into memory kits / configs for best perf).

did you stay on that athlon 64 2800+ all the way till that... that celeron sandy? did you stop gaming / carring about performance or something? you went from pretty gud processors to a large gap and then celeron and locked i5 ivy. similar with your gpu's.
