is linux mint a good place to start for a long time windows user?
I just want an OS that looks clean and gets the job done with no hassle (e.g. no "cute" assistant, no constant tips and tricks on screen, no updating without my permission, no tablet-esque squares for icons, etc) and Mint seems like it'll do the trick. what does /g/ think
Ubuntu, its flavours, and Mint are the best choices for a user who just wants to get shit done, despite /g/ memes. Mint is basically Ubuntu with a different DE and different defaults.

Yes, mint is what you're looking for. Choosing a DE is fun if you want to play with it.
Cinnamon is pretty, Xfce is simple, KDE is closest to windows 10 included suite, MATE is a middle ground.
You can install any later and uninstall others, don't fret the choice too much on any linux download page.

Yes mint with cinnamon is comfy as fuck
While Mint is pretty intuitive and comfy, especially with Cinnamon as the Desktop Environment, it is kinda buggy and the devs have fucked up pretty big on security a few times.
I would suggest using OpenSUSE or even Ubuntu over Mint for those reasons.

go fuck yourself, why would you even WANT an OS that isn't easy to use with no hassle?
>>60184183
openSUSE Leap 42.2
select KDE as DE when you install

Go for Linux Mint XFCE 18.1
The only thing you'll have to fix is screen tearing
Fix it by using:
compton --backend glx --paint-on-overlay --vsync opengl-swc
Put that in: Sessions and Startup > Application Autostart > Add > (paste above as command, name it whatever you want) > Restart Laptop/PC
Good luck

Linux Mint is all right. I first started with Ubuntu, then Mint, then Debian, but got extremely comfy with Xubuntu. Highly recommend it.

Let me suggest you Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS XX
