What do we learn from this video?
1. Linus is made of fucking money
2. RED cameras are highway robbery, proprietary hardware is garbage

That guy is fucking retarded. He doesn't even seem to realize what he spent 100k dollarinos on. What the fuck.

RED cameras are not highway robbery, they are professional cinema cameras with a ton if features and very high quality sensors.
Something you don't need at all to make youtube trash.

>>

"There are just a few IMAX cameras available. Camera rental is about $12,000 – $16,000 a week. Film stock will run $2 to $3 a foot to buy, process and reduce for viewing/editing. You will likely shoot 150,000 to 250,000 feet (double that for 3D)."

A millions-viewed video, even over the course of a year, will make about 1% of that. Maybe a few more percent if every single viewer disables adblock, watches an ad in its entirety and then clicks on it at the end.
>>

>>60181028
Bayer sensor means "8K" really only gives you a 4K red channel, a 4K blue channel and two 4K green channels.
Rest gets interpolated.
So to make pixel perfect 4K video without any blurring you need an 8K camera.

Shooting at a higher resolution also allows you to crop in post without losing too much quality.

But that's only important when you shoot something interesting, obviously - LTT works just as well in 320p
>>
>>60181152
As if any of the shit they do are supposed to be coherent.
>>
>>60181138
1000 views generally earns you between $1 and $5 on clicks alone.

So a million views is between $1k and $5k, way more if you do product placement.
>>
>>60181214
14bit 2K > 8bit 8K any day of the week
>>
>>60181214
But video is in YUV420 not RGB so the 8K sensor will give you real YUV420 8K video.
>>
How about the Canon C500?

http://cinemaeos.usa.canon.com/products/eos-c500-eos-c500-pl/
>>
I'd imagine that if you're actually in a field that requires cameras like that, you can recoup the cost in no time.
>>
>>60181253
Between $1K and $5K is about 1% of the total bill, especially since the first few months for this video are not during a hot marketing season.

>product placement
That might well be a separate and substantial payoff, but the original claim was "ad revenue from views." Point is he's not going to make anywhere near $138K from that, and certainly not more.
>>
>>60181300
There is no field that *requires* a camera like that.

>>

And, yes, they are overpriced as fuck with their 8k meme technology

Even if the cameras do cost $65k a pop, it's not like they'll suddenly be worth $0 in a year.

If you think a camera is an investment you're a fucking moron, it's a production tool.

Considering how many views his videos get, he wouldn't even need to use these cameras all that much in the next 5 years to make that money back.

The argument can be made he could make the same money with less spent on cameras, but this way he has 8k RAWs that can be uploaded in 2025 or whenever people can actually watch it.

>>
>>60179893
Retard here.
I can understand the camera itself costing that much because I'm sure it's technologically amazing.
But paying several hundred dollars for a handle? Or a cable? Or a hard drive?

You'd think with how many people/youtubers are willing to pay for that quality camera, there could easily be a competitor that doesn't overcharge or use proprietary versions of basic, non-tech accessories.

Why isn't there a store-brand alternative to Red's Apple practices?

>>
>>60181028
Linus has a thing where you pay $3 per month and get to watch their videos a week before they are uploaded to youtube, 8k video downloads are (or will be) part of that.
Also, having a higher resolution is convenient cause you can zoom in by cropping without losing quality if needed.
>>
>>60184001
The market for them is very small.

its a horrible waste of money for youtubers to buy RED cameras for their shit (after shitting on 4K mind you)

>But paying several hundred dollars for a handle? Or a cable? Or a hard drive?
When you are filming a movie that has a budget in the hundreds of millions what is a $200 handle ? nothing. Catering costs more than that on daily basis.
You don't have the time to waste hacking together a handle, your time and the time on the film set is more valuable than to try and piece together some makeshift display that works with the RED camera.

This video is akin to some car "enthusiast" buying formula 1 tires and then whining about the cost of them
>>
>>60184001
They're intentionally pricing them that high so that plebs don't buy their cameras. These accessories cost nothing to the people who actually need this level of quality for their videos.
>>
>>60184171
>>60184286
But there isn't any genuine reason for these accessories to cost that much. Who cares if it's targeted towards multi-million dollar movie budgets? At this point I wouldn't be surprised if those budgets were overinflated by what's basically exploitation by companies like Red.

The argument falls further apart when we have youtubers buying the camera for tech review videos of all things.

Wouldn't anyone, whether they be a million-dollar movie studio or some kids unboxing video cards, much rather save several thousand dollars on an identical competitor that doesn't overcharge? It seems like a pretty open market, especially when considering the thread has led me to believe Red is the CHEAPER alternative for this quality of hardware.

>They're intentionally pricing them that high so that plebs don't buy their cameras
>Let's make sure as few people as possible can buy our product. Why? No reason! We just hate money.
I'm sure more people would be willing to buy these cameras if they didn't have to pay the camera's price twice over just for cables and plastic handles.
>>
>>60184078
he just put out an Intel optane vid in the time between this thread starting and this comment. what a fucking shill.
>>
>>60184381
many of these cameras are purpose built for certain directors, not just movie studios. why bother with a piecemeal camera setup when the industry answers to your every beck and call?
>>
>>60180600
It's how RED makes back the cost for making the "brain" so inexpensive compared to competitors. This isn't new or exclusive to RED. Plenty of companies do it. RED at least doesn't rape you on both the camera AND accessories like Sony and Arri.

Linus is literally barking up the wrong tree from his ignorance. You find the same sort of shit in other professions too ffs. Just look at medical supplies. I guess this shouldn't be surprising from some dipshit that made all his money from youtube.
>>
>>60179893
So if he hates it so much, why did they buy it?
>>
>>60184381
Apple and beats price their crap really high and they're doing fine financially, maybe there's more to products than their price and the utility you get out of them.
>>
He is no aiming towards the film production fan, he is aiming to the tech fan who says
>hurrr durrr specs 8k video lololol lmao
If Linus aims for the film production guy, he will be showing a pro camera like the Arri Alexa, but he is a goy-sponsored who prefers resolution over quality.
I mean, the RED cameras are good, but they aren't top notch
>>
Idk, I like his personality and even though he's obviously shilling on occasion, he seems like an equal opportunity shiller for the most part.

>>
>>60184001
This camera, like most professional production cameras, is not meant to be bought or owned. It's meant to be rented or leased. The prices are all Fantasyland, the outfit you are leasing the camera from will pay nothing like that.

>>60184965
It's funny, these pointless upgrade are how he makes content and now he's gone so far as to spend 100k to complain about buying a cinema camera that makes no sense for any youtube production. Plenty of other channels do just fucking dandy with a DSLR and not a petabyte of storage.
>>
lmao brandon the asian just said we need 8k cameras and gets linus to buy them

he can't even color grade correctly

linus is yellow in all the tech quickie videos

Not only jewtube, his team can't process decently the video. And that's not a camera issue, Linus' personal sucks balls at editing, they can't juice their equipment.

I thought that one was a given with all the memes they throw into the video. Especially the Channel Super Fun ones.

The RED is just over exposed. Probably didn't calculate the required exposure properly. It could be that the Leica mount for the RED is letting more light through than the one for the Alexa.

RED doesn't offer a filter pack without an OLPF, but I'm pretty sure the OLPF is significantly blurring the image, especially on the new 8K sensors. Do you have any thoughts based on your experience in QA there?

>>60187632
The equipment is rated for medical use and undergoes a lot of testing to get this rating. I'm sure they are insured as well. If the hospital didn't buy the rated stuff, they would be up against lawsuits if something failed. Buying the expensive stuff shows the hospital was being responsible and doing its best. Any investigation into failed equipment, seeing that it was used and installed and maintained properly, would then turn to the equipment supplier and manufacture to see if negligence was involved there.

This, is the part of the medical profession I respect, the hospitals where they are trying to save your ass. The physicians that peddle long term use of short term symptom suppression...not so much. I have to add that having been diagnosed as 'fine' and yet needing some medication only to find I had food allergies and nutrient deficiences that fixed my shit so I wasn't fine was I? Fuckers...

I'd get it if this was coming from some kind of independent cinematography study youtube channel, but not from Linus
>>
So much autism ITT. It was a cool video.
Go back to watching a nigger literally holding a phone in his hand and reading the specs.
>>
>>60188880
For youtube the 8K camera is pretty much useless. Or at least, he gets diminishing returns when compared to a cheaper 4K camera.

However, they are setting up their own video platform thing for themselves, and people they invite, with significantly higher bitrates and the option to download the videos in 8K. I think it's called "Floatplane" or some shit. So they'll have a use for it.

But spending 250k on two cameras is still retarded unless they plan on expanding their business to include something more.

yes. seems he delegated the task of purchasing equipment to his camera crew or something and he didn't buy it himself but apparently they really will need a camera like that (see >>60189050)
>>
>>60189019
Not all reviews become obsolete. Headphones and headsets in particular are relevant for years and years after they're uploaded. Also phones come to mind since a lot of people would rather buy an old flagship from 2+ years ago than a modern budget phone.
Look at stuff like the HD600/650 that have been out for like over a decade and are still consistently recommended.
>>
>>60188933
It's pretty short sighted to think that we will ever need to see his shit in 8k.

>>60179893

>>
16K video when?
>>
>>60189265
Probably before 8k TVs hit the market proper.
>>
>>60188933
By the time 8k may be largely available;
1. He could have bought this camera for significantly less money
2. Most people won't really care about his legacy content

He really ought to have bought something else, the RED camera is pretty good but for specific reasons, non of which he is ever likely to take advantage of.
>>
>>60179893

I'm trying to wrap my head around this video.

Is he sponsored by the camera company, and making it look like he's raging over it's expensive cost, as some form of advertising?

Or, did he buy this camera and pay for it out-of-pocket, to rage over it as some sort of way to get viewers?

I guess if he bought it, he could probably sell it and recover 90% of the expense. So, if it cost him $150K, after reselling, he's only out $15K.
>>
>>60190185
Why do you want to be a manlet?
>>
>>60191783
One theory I have, is he needed an excuse to use the Petabyte of Hard Drives Seagate (his sponsor) sent him. So, he conjured up this little expensive 8K camera demo.

>spends $150K for 8K camera
>has excuse to use 1 petatbyte of Seagate sponsored drives
>shows off Seagate drives for next 10 videos
>bashes expensive camera for entertainment value
>sells camera when vids are done
>makes $50K from Seagate sponsorship
>only loses $10K from camera purchase after resale
>vids get 5 million views
>profit
>>
>>60188629
Knowing people like him, he probably doesn't even take out a salary, instead keeping that money in the company & living off his wife's income.
>>
>>60179893

>Implying he paid the full price.
Considering how popular he is and how much he shills for absolutely everyone, he most likely got a hefty discount for it.
And even if that wasn't the case, this thing is most probably tax deductible as a business expense.

Also get ready for 8k youtube content becoming more of a standard.

>>60189050

Basically a place where their paying subscribers can watch videos early in much greater detail, and in the future they might want to invite other youtubers/creators to upload videos on the platform.
>>
>>60194119
You forget that they aren't really trying to compete with youtube or anything like that.

Currently it's just a place for them to upload their videos in greater detail and for paying customers to see those videos earlier.
Later it might become some invite-only platform
And then from there it might become something bigger.

But it's not like they are funneling all their money into the thing. They don't lose out on much.

>>
>>60194119
The video streaming already works, so suggesting that they just have "idea guys and a logo" is completely inaccurate. They need programmers to add the features everyone expects, work out bugs, and make everything work as efficiently as possible. I'd say they're putting a particular emphasis on efficiency, since I doubt they'll be able to pay for a lot of network bandwidth and server hardware.
