So..... is it that bad?

I want a Ryzen, but need to be on Windows 10 to get full compatibility/support.

Wat do
>>
>>60174023
install gentoo
>>
>>60174031

But I want gay men
>>
>>60174023
Code your own drivers
>>
>>60174053

I have a stressful job and am doing a Master's degree. Learning to code is not happening right now.

So, Windows 10, is it really that bad?
>>
>>60174061
try it on a virtual machine and see for yourself
>>
>>60174051
there are plenty of gay men on gentoo
>>
>>60174091

I mean, I've tried it on other people's machines, but I'm looking to get some kind of theme so it's function and GUI is similar to Windows 7. I've heard alot about privacy concerns but found that most of those settings can be switched off in the settings. So I'm wondering what the main issues are with Windows 10 that others have experienced.
>>
>>60174121
Try LTSB enterprise version. It doesn't have any of the shitty tablet shit like xbox, cortana etc.
>>
>>60174121
You can't switch them over. If you really want windows just pick used 2011 (not v3) xeon and install win 7
>>
>>60174051
You can use ryzen on windows 7, just have to jump through some hoops, like having to reinstall to get usb drivers.
>>
>>60174124

Wow never heard of this before. Looks perfect.

>>60174138

And yeah I found the Anandtech work around but given that new drivers for the BIOS will be released presumably with only a Windows 10 version (as anything before is officially no longer supported) I thought it could cause me problems down the line. Ryzen and various games running on it are having updates quite frequently and I didn't want to miss out on those.
>>
>>60174154
if you're in the EU you can buy legit LTSB keys from resellers for little money.
>>
>>60174175

Yeah I'm in the UK. I was considering just getting a cracked version of Windows 10 but if this is cheaper I may aswell buy.
>>
>>60174023
My R7 1700 runs just fine in win7
>>
>>60174200

You just upgraded your components and it ran? Or did you have to do on of those workarounds?

I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, what was your system?
>>
>buy AMD CPU to avoid intel's hardware-level botnet
>forced to use windows 10

lmao
>>
>>60174234

I'm getting Ryzen 5 because for me it's a better CPU than the i5.

Windows botnet settings can be turned off but that obviously won't make a difference to your viewpoint
>>
Buy an i7 inatead fuck AMD
>>
>>60174023
Windows 10 is perfectly fine, don't listen to the shut-in autists on /g/. Half of them literally have paranoid schizophrenia, thinking that MS is actually spying on them watching chinese cartoons.
>>
>>60174061
No
>>
>>60174329

Nah son, I can't after looking at the benchmarks and general performance and the pricepoints I can't justify an i7 to myself at this time.

>>60174341

Yeah this is what I'm starting to think, I don't think theres any practical real-world disadvantage to Windows 10 that can't be turned off/deleted.

Had the same issue. Its not that bad. Get classic shell, hide cortana and notification bar (under system icons) disable a few services, one in particular which was some kind of update service for other network pcs that was hogging bandwidth.

There's a pastebin on the archives if you can find it that explains how to install and activate 10, dont fuck around with non official torrents or LTSB memes.

If you have relatively new hardware, it runs fine. 1600 w/ ab350 pro4 here
>>
>>60174402

Thanks for the info. I found out that apparently the free upgrade is still open to those who use assistive technologies, so I'm currently downloading Windows 10. I'll be looking to disable and delete all the bloating features and download a classic theme.

Did you find everything transferred over well in terms of files/settings etc?
>>
>>60174031
What's the state of Ryzen support in Linux?
>>
>>60174061
LTSB is comfy af sempai
>>
>>60174217
the only 2 components i took over from my old build where the gpu and the psu, so its basically a new system with a fresh windows install. the only problems i had during install where the missing usb drivers. And because i don't have a DVD drive that turned out to be a bit of a problem (flash drive was obviously no option). solution was to rip the flash driver cd to flash drive, boot to an embeddet linux, in there copy the drive flash drive to HDD, now boot from the windows install flash drive again, use old ibm PS/2 keyboard to tell windows where the drivers are and then finally install windows as normal.

R7 1700
Asus prime X370
16gb 2800 ram
R9 390
and a shittonne of drives

>Windows 10 botnet settings can be turned off

wrong
>>
>>60174545
no you can turn them off, it just doesn't help
>>
>>60174523

Ok thanks for the info, I'm hoping to upgrade to Windows 10 on my current hard drive and transfer that over to the new build. Wonder whether it'll just start up without an issue or if I'll have to reinstall Windows 10 via a USB stick.
>>
>>60174023
you don't actually need to be on Windows 10 mate

just install your drivers and everything will work fine
>>
>>60174586

But won't I miss out on any Ryzen-related patches and updates? They won't be releasing them for Windows 7 too as it's not supported right?
>>
>>60174595
Afaik that depends on you mobo manufacturer
>>
>>60174595
you'll miss out on any uarch-specific improvements to the kernel itself. those are peanuts though.

AMD claims not to support 7 but their chipset drivers do and install/work just fine.

>>60174641
that's plausible. best to check for that before you buy a motherboard OP. I can confirm Asus has driver support for 7
>>
>>60174051
Install Ubuntu
>>
>>60174641
>>60174652

I'm looking to get an Asus Prime B350-Plus so hopefully that should be supported too.

So would it be a case of just swapping out the motherboard, attaching my hard drive and installing the drivers via usb? Or will I need Win 7 re-install?
>>
>>60174359
The telemetry turns back on after you turn it off. That's why people complain about it so much.

Telemetry is an attack vector. It doesn't matter if you're a good little boy, an attacker can utilize the information leaked from your computer to case your joint, learn about your habits, etc.
>>
>>60174685
I built a system for a friend of mine with that motherboard and he's running 7

> So would it be a case of just swapping out the motherboard, attaching my hard drive and installing the drivers via usb? Or will I need Win 7 re-install?

that's exactly what I did when I upgraded from my old AM3+ system

I'd always recommend a fresh install though
>>
>>60174523
>>60174217
I was in the exact same situation, new build except for PSU and GPU. However, I had no luck with ols PS/2 keyboard.

https://pastebin.com/smjvLZN4

This guide helps. I created a DVD install from w7 ISO and then ran a Gigabyte (my MB) patch tool. It copied the install disk onto a flash drive with patched USB drivers.
>>
>>60174713

Ok thanks alot for the info man, I think fuck Windows 10 for the time being then. I'll just swap out for the new mobo and CPU and hope for the best.
>>
>>60174685
Depends on what you current system is. But i guess for most cases, you will probatly have to reinstall Windows 7, since ryzen is a new arcitecture
>>
>>60174741

I'm on an i5 3570K so I'll probably have to re-install Windows 7 then.

Need to find that clean install Win 7 CD I had lying around somewhere...
>>
>>60174051
Gay men are in abundance on gentoo
>>
>>60174695

You can turn it down to collect only the most basic information about your computer:

http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-telemetry-secrets/

So it's not all that bad in real terms.

Is an OS with tons of holes meant for datamining good?

Keep in mind these holes can be used to gain access to your PC
>>

You'll need 4.10 kernel to get all the ryzen-related performance patches.
>>

nah

they do support 7

Ok thanks for the help.

I'm reading alot of places saying that a clean install of Windows 10 is recommended on any new CPU/motherboard, unfortunately I wasn't planning on getting a new HD so that leaves me a little stuck. So here's my solution, tell me if it's a good idea:

1. Upgrade to Windows 10 now on my old PC
2. Create some kind of bootable USB with the Windows 10 install on it.
3. Re-install windows 10 on my old hard drive via USB after booting up new pc for first time
4. Install all new drivers etc.
5. Turn off/remove all botnet
6. Live the good life

How's that sounding?
>>
>>60176030
Yeah that'll work regarding usb boot drive see

https://pastebin.com/smjvLZN4
>>
>>60176088

Yeah thanks I've bookmarked that one. So is there any chance I'll end up with issues by not doing a clean install? Also im considering just getting an SSD and installing Windows 10 on that
>>
>>60174175
Don't do this OP, only fagets purchase Winblows. Just get an evaluation copy and activate it using an activator or a registry hack or something.
