The router reroutes packets to the correct LAN address
So what is port forwarding needed for? Why do you need to port forward anything?
>>
To reroute ports, not just packets, obviously.
>>
>>60173509
Think of the router as your receptionist and the port being your room number.
>>
So when a computer off somewhere asks for <routerIP>:><Port> it gets redirected to your computer instead of handled by the router. Which is usually some form of blocking.

Why would you need to reroute ports when the port number is part of the packet?

w8, so your computer is identified by a port? What if two different nodes are using the same port number?
>>
>>60173594
>>60173619

Dont know if its bait, but... You should read about sockets and managing networks.

You need to do a lot of load balancing and packet control among other things on heavily populated nets.
>>
IP address tells you which PC, port tells you which program, right ?

I know more about sockets than you bud, I was just seeing if this board is full of LAPERS who have no idea what they're talking about

Which I've pretty much confirmed

Britan is FUCKED lmao

port forwarding is when you need express delivery no questions asked.

A router reroutes packets to the correct Network.

Next question.
>>
Is this the /deliciousbrown/ thread?
>>
I will explain with the aid of this excellent illustration.

Your router is the bridge between your home network and the Internet. It has two addresses on it, an Internet facing address and a network facing address.

When your computer wants to talk to a computer on the Internet it opens a connection targeted to that computer's IP address. Your router logs this connection attempt and the port you are making it on so that it can forward the return packets back to your computer automagically.

HOWEVER, if a computer on the Internet side wants to connect to YOUR computer it cannot because it doesn't know your NETWORK ADDRESS, which it could be a part of locally anyway. This is why you need to set up a forwarded port, so that it can connect to your ROUTER's Internet facing address and have the packets FORWARDED to your computer's network address.
>>
A router routes packets yes.
But the forwarding part is due to something called "Security" it was developed and is being developed till this current day.

Thanks anon. I wanted to explain it too but am too lazy and tired.

You're an idiot if you honestly believe NAT is a security feature.

>LAPERS
What's a LAPER?
>>
>>60174518
NAT garbage was developed out of necessity because everybody totally missed adopting IPv6 when they should have. So they just sat there watching the IPv4 space run out but instead of realizing that now it's really time for IPv6 they came up with that trash only to avoid v6 even longer.

How would lying on /g/ about your capabilities be 'live action role play' though?
/g/ isn't real life...
It's a shitposting board that used to have better shitposting.

Sometimes I miss the InElite.

A router connects two networks, A and B. With NAT, all computers in the network A are seen as with the same IP address by computers in network B. Port forwarding is needed to help router distinguish which computer on the network A should accept the incoming packet.

Your home computer has local IP address 192.168.1.100, and your mother's has 192.168.1.101. Your router has local IP address 192.168.1.1. Your router also has address on the Internet, say 8.8.8.7. When you send a request from your computer 192.168.1.100 to connect to the machine on the Internet with address of 8.8.8.8, the packet that arrives there has a return address of 8.8.8.7 - back to your router. Since your router established that connection, it knows that when a response from 8.8.8.8 arrives, it should be sent to your computer, 192.168.1.100, and not your mothers, 192.168.1.101. No configuration is needed to make this kind of request work with NAT.

But when a packet from the internet arrives on your router that's not associated with a previously established connection, your router doesn't know whether to send it to your computer 192.168.1.100, or your mother's 192.168.1.101. You need to configure NAT: specify port range and a local IP, and all packets coming to router from outside to those ports will be sent to a machine in the local network with the specified IP address. Optionally you can configure the router to rewrite the port of the packet to something else.

>i already knew this
anon pls you're not fooling anyone.

It's just a meme word like cuck and mactard.
calling someone a larper is just easier than typing out "you're a fucking retard who's lying on the internet about your capabilities and employment"
