Trying to get a Debian Live USB working.

rufus-2.14.exe with debian-live-8.7.1-amd64-kde-desktop.iso.

I am using a Medion Akoya S2218 with windows 10.

I went into the BIOS and disabled boot security. Then I changed the boot device order so the USB was first.

Still just boots to windows as normal. Help?

Reposting from last thread

I recently upgraded my PC. From a GTX660 to a GTX1060 and from an old 1000:1 Monitor to a 3000:1.
Now My probel is: the contrast is way too high, slightly dark things are outright black.
But the problem doesn't exist on my Windows installation, I even confirmed it with comparisons between games that run on both systems, but I don't have any games that tax the system hard enough to confirm whether there are serious perfomance issues. But I did notice that Blender doesn't offer CUDA rendering on Linux, but on Windows and also, it crashes alot on linux. Since I use my Linux installation to edit photos and videos, it's a big deal breaker.
i suspected my New monitor to be the culprit but I ruled that out now.
So now I suspect my Graphics card.
I saw under "additional drivers" that my PC is using the open source xorg driver, so I switched to the proprietary. After being asked to input my password and confirming, the additional drivers window goes all gray and doesn't come back until a system error, pic related is a part of the Details
How do I resolve this to install the newest driver and get my graphics running properly (hopefully)?

Reminder to test source mage on a virtual machine at least, don't miss this experience

Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can also use flags.

as far as I can tell Debian should support UEFI boot, which you seem to be using.
https://wiki.debian.org/UEFI
do you have a fast boot option? Any keys to bring up a one-time boot menu during boot, so you can manually choose the usb?
do you get any messages flashing up before windows takes over?

I tried to set the "Partition Scheme and Target System Type" to "MBR partition Scheme for UEFI" in Rufus, but it said the ISO doesn't support that, so it defaulted to "MBR partition Scheme for BIOS or UEFI-CSM"

I couldn't find out about the fast boot, or how to bring up a one-time boot menu.

No messages, it just boots straight to windows as normal.

Thanks for the help.

It literally doesn't do anything at all, but the people at debian are too autistic to get rid of it because it's not really a problem to keep it around.

that wall of text was a bit much to read, maybe try being more precise next time.
it indeed sounds like a driver problem. What distribution are you using, Ubuntu? You can either install the driver through that tool, or download it from the nvidia website.
To troubleshoot why the additional drivers tool fails, you should look at the system logs. You can use a graphical log viewer tool for that.

i looked into it, it's a nickle script, an interpreted C-like language.
It uses cairo bindings found in cairo-5c.
Running it presents some kind of matrix math window geometry solver thing that lets you drag window geometry around and if you press the "doit" button, it fucks with your display like in the example and I just had to restart my computer to undo the effects because there's no way to undo it.

Yes, Ubuntu, 16.04 there's an image attached to to the original post in the old thread.
I now managed to install the proprietary driver, although I cant explain why.
The problem still persists. i tried using the "colors" tool to calibrate my Monitor, but it doesnt seem to help.

I use my old wallpaper I used before I made the switch as a reference. the bumps in the background were easily distinguished and grey, now with the new setup everything fades into almost-black with slightly gray bumps.

I also noticed that additional drivers lists my Graphics Card as "NVIDIA Corporation: unknown"
>>
>>60164136
>>60164265
I think I have narrowed the problem.

I found

Just mashing f12 on startup, I manually selected the USB and nothing happened. So I think it isn't formatted correctly but I don't know how.

When was the last time anyone actually proved that a proprietary product's source code was more well written than an open source project?

All I ever hear are horror stories from microsoft about their gigantic codebase that they no longer fully understand because too many people left the company and now they do insane workarounds just to add options to dialog boxes.

>>60165635
>le le

>>
>>60165606
The general argument is why do they need to hide it if there's nothing dodgy going on?
Nobody is suggesting they actually take public pull requests, just show people how things work and let them change things if they want to.

The only advantage of course is maintaining security through obscurity, which is the ultimate red flag.

Doesn't apply for paid-for software I guess, but then I'd just torrent everything anyway.
>>
>>60165128
Tried with mint same problem
>>
>>60165606
Again, no difference whether it's open or closed source, the thing that's important is the software you're looking at.

It may be true that proprietary software has uglier code on average, like niggers have lower IQ on generals, but you won't deny there are some smart niggers wandering around somewhere out there.

Download the .deb from packages.debian.org (https://packages.debian.org/jessie/all/firmware-iwlwifi/download)
Save to a flash drive or sd card
Copy to the x220

dpkg -i THEPACKAGENAME.deb

No. Different distros aren't like mac OS vs windows. More or less anything you can do on one distro you can do on any other. For example you could run ubuntu and compile everything as if it were gentoo if you really wanted, it's just that gentoo is designed to make doing that easier.

so, i have some bigger complications my computer isnt working properly so I need to post from my phone. Some System specs:
I have a 5 year old MSI motherboard with an i5 as well as a brand new GTX1060 and a few harddrives, most importantly a 120GB SSD which holds the partitions for my 2 OS, W10 and Ubuntu 16.04
background:
i tried fixing some issues with graphics on Linux. it ended up getting worse with finally the software updater greeting me with an error message. I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 16.04, but this time kubuntu
it didnt work out well. my windows also starts fucking up here are my current issues
Kubuntu:
>driver settings stuck in an eternal loop gathering information abou the system
>wont connect to online services like Discover in some instances
>stuck on the lowest graphical setting
>when starting from bootstick it says "nouveau: unknown chipset" i know this relates to the graphics card most likely
Windows:
>most programs wont start, chrome works fine, but UNETBOOTING wont start, steam will crash with "bootstrapper is not responding"
>wont shut down, will give error message along the lines of some memory being referenced and cant be rewritten. if I hot "shotdown anyways" it will just enter eternally showing the progress circle
>the basic UI crashes starting with the home menu no longer popping up when prompted and eventually the bottom bar disappearing completely

additionally, this has been an issue for longer now, whenever I boot up the Linux partition, it sets my MB clock to a timezone to one 2 hours earlier, which causes windows to display the same faulty time since it absolutely refuses to stick to any other time but system time, despite me setting to to individual time.
now my questions:
could it be my SSD breaking down? as I said it's only for OS partitions, no important data on there
Do I need to wipe and reinstall my system drive or get a new MB+Processor+Harddrive altogether?

>>
>>60173634
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Bear with me for a moment, I'm new to Linux. So each program on Linux must be installed via a script that is readable by apt. The purge command accesses the install script, so I must not delete the script after install?
Is the script readable by humans?
>>
>>60174168
pretty much
>>
>>60174230
>So each program on Linux must be installed via a script that is readable by apt.
No, apt is just a frontend for a package manager. You don't need to use a package manager at all.

What is installing, anyway? It's just copying the necessary files to your system and adding the appropriate directories to the environment so your shell knows where to find the program when you try to launch it. All this can be done with human-readable scripts, or manually, or with binary installers.

Say you want to install mpv on your system. Of course you could just
# apt install mpv
but that version is outdated. So you might instead download a binary installer (most commonly .deb files) and use dpkg (your package manager) to install it. You should be able to remove it with the package manager again with no need to know anything about the location where the software was installed. You can safely delete the .deb file after installation.
Or you might install the software from source. Download the source code, it comes with a configuration script. It's human-readable. Executing it will let you specify various options depending on what the dev wrote in it. Then you compile the program (you create executable files from the human-readable source) and finally you CAN "install" it by calling another script, or simply copying the binary files to a directory of your choosing
$ cp /binary/file/path /path/to/software/dir/
and adding that directory to your PATH environment variable using
$ export PATH="/path/to/software/dir/:$PATH"
. Afterwards you can safely delete the downloaded source code, makefiles, config scripts etc., however, you need to remember where you put the binaries if you ever want to delete them, and remember to remove that directory from the PATH after "uninstalling" (optional).

Great but that still doesn't explain how dpkg knows where all the files were scattered during installation in order to remove them, especially in the absence of the installation script.

By maintaining a database that contains precisely this information.

So there's this guy who makes pixelart (https://khaled482.tumblr.com/) and since it's pixelart, it should be possible to scale it to any size (like a wallpaper), right? How would I do this with imagemagick?
>>
>>60174444

So if an installation program doesn't go through dpkg and simply copy pastes the files, dpkg wouldn't know about it. It's not like it keeps track of all copied files on Linux.

This only works if I have the source code right? Can I force nonfree, 3rd party, binary-only software to install to a single folder?

No, you don't need the source for self contained folders because they are usually binaries that you put in opt and link to your bin path. You can use make with --prefix=pathtoyourfolder to build there, but I'm not sure if some problems appears. I don't know much about this though

It's basically nostalgia in DE form. If you liked GNOME2, MATE will be perfect for you. Otherwise, eh.

most modern cpus have such engines, thats basically why libreboot supports just pre 2008 cpus
these engines actually have a lot of control, read this: https://libreboot.org/faq.html#intel

Is that honestly what you think?
I mean if it were an Arch or Gentoo sticker, that would seem more try-hard to me unless you have a really high power level. What about a regular old Linux penguin?

I just want to invite conversation from fellow Linux users. I'm a university student.
>>
>>60177978
The penguin will do, it's a good thing halfway from ubuntu/mint faggotry and arch edgyness.
>>
>>60177978
Tux isn't a brand tho.

Putting a mint sticker on is like putting a vista sticker on a macbook.

Alright so I just did a fresh install of debian 8 and this is the process I had to go through to install the IDLE for Python 3.4:

- try to download and install idle-python3.4 package
- get told I need python3-tk package
- try to download and install python3-tk package
- get told I need blt_2.5.3 package
- try to download and install blt_2.5.3 package
get told I need tk8.6 package
- try to download and install tk8.6 package
- Success!
- Do all of the above in reverse order

Is this how it's going to be for every package I try to install? Is there an easier way?
