I want to ditch forever Windows for Ubuntu GNOME (because Unity is dead) but I feel pretty worried about how my life can be without it.
Most of my software is open source and avaiable for Linux too, I'm only afraid of data loss on my external hard drive.
Do someone experienced some data loss or some weird shit? I've got a custom Intel build from 2014 and an X230, so I think it will be good for compatibility.
I'll miss this software if i switch to Linux:
Musicbee
Office suite, but I only use it for simple things.
mp3tag
sharex
afterburner
tpfancontrol
"Muh" games, but I want to stop gaming so it's good.
Can someone help me to make this jump? I used Ubuntu since 12.04 LTS so i'm a little experienced.
TL;DR: I want to ditch Windows to Ubuntu Gnome.

I assume Clementine will be a fine replacement.
>office suite
WPS and Libre are just fine. I used those even when I was on Windows.

25% of steam's library is available on Linux, you'll be fine. Out of all the games I play only Warcraft 3, WoW and UT04 are windows exclusive. Use Humblebundle, GOG and Steam as your gaymin sources.
Data loss is easy to prevent. Move all your shit onto a seperate HDD or partition and leave it be when installing your OS. Linux installation will make it's own partitions and leave yours intact.

1. back your shit up
2. disconnect external drive
3. install ubuntu
4. plug drive back in
5. ????
6. profit

for the fancontrol, write your own script then echo it to /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1

I'm not afraid about data loss while installing Ubuntu, but when I using it.
I heard a lot of people on 4chan said all their external hard drive was wiped after a ubuntu/fedora crash.

big piece of bullshit
always keep backups regardless of OS

The curent iteration of ubuntu gnome isn't up to how it should be: like on Fedora.

The most reddit desktop I've ever seen.

No, that doesn't happen.
What happens a lot is windows 10 destroying partitions with Linux operating systems for no reason, but this was fixed sometime last year.
