I came to 4chan (via /b/) in Spring of 2009 in college and then /g/ in the Fall of that same year.

To be honest, I think a lot of the shitposters lost interest, a lot of people probably lose interest after getting jobs/careers. The general board attitude changed towards some of the most prolific posters and the demographics changed as a whole.

I think it's a tiny bit more complicated than that. Anyone can setup an imageboard, true. Userbase size is important, also true. However userbase quality isn't magical, and I believe that proper moderation is the only way to enforce a quality userbase. The approach will be to let everyone and anyone get on the site, and to ban quickly and en masse to trim the herd of undesirables.
When I look at other imageboards, all the ones with non-0 userbase end up dead because of either under- or over-moderation. Other imageboards nevertheless "often" manage to get enough users to be said to be alive (be it kraut, 420, or 8 to give popular examples) unless shit hits the fans (like for kraut).

I think the first time I used /g/ was 2006 and I once wrote a rap parody about 2008-2009 era /g/ memes like Gentoo and MarshViperX. I didn't use 4chan from 2010. Something reminded me that 4chan existed and I started lurking here by and by late last year.

I feel that instinctual drive to be a self-righteous oldfag and bitch about a decline in quality, but it would be a bit of a lie. This whole idea of "general" threads is definitely new to me, and I like it. For one, seems like now people actually discuss software and programming more often, at least in those threads. Combining "general" threads and the catalog (when was that added?) makes for a LOT less fewer people simply jumping into every thread on page 0 and shitting it up just because they're already there.

Having code blocks are an improvement, for sure.

Maybe that's just my perception, but while it may be equally shit quality here, it's definitely not worse. Back in 2009 and before it was not only loads of shitty trolling, I seem to remember the tech support threads being 10x more numerous. Japanese birds feeding woodscrews to trolls, even. No time for love threads hit page 10 and were remade every 3-6 hours, and even as someone who posted all the time in them, that shit got stale.

Hell, I recall threads on /g/ whose only text was "You fags will argue about anything" next to a picture of something that was not necessarily tech related. Of course, endless arguing would follow.
