I currently own a Nomos Tangente 38 date. Can't really say anything bad about it. Movement is fucking superbly made and finished, and accurate too. And I don't even mind the fact that it's basically a Lange "ripoff".
I really like it, thing is though, it's getting fucking boring. That minimal bauhaus design may be nice, but shit, i want something more lively.
So I'm probably gonna flip the Nomos for something else. Recommend me a nice luxury watch, up to about 2k. Used or new, don't matter. I was thinking maybe something like a Girard Perregaux 7000, something El Primero or that one 90's Breitling with the reserve complication.
>>
>>60066305
It's a Bulang and Sons strap. Best quality leather strap I've ever used by quite some margin.

My dad gave me a Rolex last week and he told me that it's a "clone movement" but that everything else is genuine Rolex. He said it's identical to a real one but he "built it" himself and "only paid $300" in total, saving him "thousands of dollars". I thought this sounded a bit off, but he was really adamant and went on to say, "only idiots and people who care more about status symbols than actual horology care whether it's completely authentic or not." Is my dad right?
>>
>>60067001
a dragon dildo?
>>
>>60067396
why would someone who "cares about actual horology" buy anything but an in house movement?
>>
>>60067396
In other words it's a fake and the movement is nowhere near identical, if he doesn't care about a status symbol he could've just bought a cheap watch.
If you actually want it to say "rolex" obviously you care about status symbol, probably even more than people buying genuine ones, because at least their movements are actually something
>>
>>60067447
Well, it's a nice watch. It looks like the real deal to me, I wouldn't have even known if he hadn't told me himself.

>>60067449

>>
>>60067457
Well instead of buying hundreds of good watches at that price point he bought a fake Rolex, why exactly if not for it to say Rolex? And why if not for people to notice it? Sure, maybe he just really likes the sub aesthetic
And yes, seeing as it's the most copied watch, the fakes are actually pretty good, especially for the price point
>>
>>60066930
Make sure you post your thoughts, I'm always interested in another source for Chromexcel straps.
>>
>>60067492
Why are you acting like the only things that matter are the movement and the logo?
>>
>>60067531
Well I admit that there is a chance that he likes the way the sub looks, though personally I'd buy the Steinshit if that was the case

He could have bought a diver like >>60065831 or >>60065811 which is a bit like a Rolex, but has it's own stand out things about it

He could've bought something like pic related. It looks exactly like a Rolex bar the text on the face.

The man that claims "only idiots care about status symbols" has got a knock off of the most well known watch from the most well known luxury watch brand
>>
>>60067563
>>60067571
I personally wouldn't care if it didn't say Rolex on it, but the point is that everything else about the watch itself is very nice. Watches aren't limited to some kind of spiritual brand identity or their movement. There are other factors.

>>60067571
Personally, I think you come across as really defensive, and I wonder if you aren't one of those guys my dad called an idiot. Why do you care so much that you strawman this entire issue like that? I'm trying to have a civil discussion here.

No idea about the g-shock, but I use my F-91 alarm as a warning one about one minute before my real alarm, so I try to get up to shut off the actual alarm because it's loud as fuck and I hate it. it might be, but you have to admit it's actually uglier than the Omega.
Sure the moonwatch is over-represented in the watch "community", but so is the Sub and you don't see many people shitting on it.
And Seiko is worshiped way too much too, they're ok but they still have lots of ugly, gaudy designs and frankly their more expensive watches look like shit. I'm wouldn't shy away paying thousands for a Seiko if it actually looked good, but as it stands it's questionable to spend more than 500 on a Seiko, unless you want the spring drive for the technology

This is baby's first watch if I'm being honest. Only watches I've owned before this were the $6-$10 garbage no name nothing's from the impulse section of various stores. Not only did I find myself buying a new one every month or so (band would fall apart, overall shit quality) but they're embarrassing to wear. Im not rich, but I'm far from poor, so I don't mind spending a bit extra if need be.

This is of course assuming this watch is a good buy. Is Timex a good brand?

First of all, everyone was criticizing the illegibility of the model he posted, not the fact that it uses a quartz movement.

Second of all, the primary reason most people who are interested in watches dislike quartz watches is because basic quartz movements are so inexpensive to make that they highly incentivize cheapening the rest of the watch to match the low cost of the movement which ultimately leads to a race to the bottom and malls full of $0.20 quartz movements in $5 Chinkshit sold in malls to clueless normies for $200.

Because mechanical movements are so much more expensive to make, they incentivize watchmakers to at least make some pretense of an effort at quality in the case/dial/hands and in having the styling at least minimally conform to well established watch design conventions.

This is proven by well made quartz watches such as vintage Seiko quartz models, Grand Seiko quartz models, Citizen Chonomaster quartz models, and other high quality quartz watches being well regarded here.

Also, some of us have an abiding fascination with the micromechanical engineering and craftsmanship required to make a high quality mechanical movement.

even if you don't like the design, it's still perfectly polished, flawless, and with a decorated, in-house movement. I fail to see how it's any worse than a Rolex even though it's half the price.
>>
>>60075719
A rolex at least has something other than completely flat sides, flat lugs, flat bezel, flat hands, etc.
>>
>>60075741

design is just taste. I don't really like the Tangente/Tangomat either. But I do really like the Metro and Minimatik.

Rolex has some models I really like (Explorer I and Submariner, for instance), but others are garbage (Oyster perpetual, etc).

Sure, but there's an argument to be made about the complexity of a design, or the difficulty of achieving a given design.

The OP and explorer are almost the same watch, aside from the dial and hands. Also the thinner lugs and angled brushing on the older models was better than the maxi lugs to be honest.
>>
>>60075678
I like their designs but for that money that case finishing and edge work is pretty bad. You get more sharp case finish on 400 range Seiko watches.
