The most computationally expensive aspect of an imageboard script is displaying threads.
The index pages aren't even that big of a deal, since you only show 15 threads at a time.

No, they're updated every time a new post submission is pushed to the database.
To bump a thread, you just update the "last_updated" timestamp of a particular thread on the thread table and to get the board index, just sort by time descending.
Requesting the actual threads from the global posts table takes longer.

Is there any web API for thread updating yet? Instead of having to refresh or w/e the site just sends events?

The threads are all cached; moot can't program for shit but someone would have to be retarded have the site hit the DB whenever someone browses a thread.
