How come we can't just create a file from a torrent hash instead of downloading it? We already know what the expected values are going to be. You would think this would be great for archiving - just make a hash of your hard drive contents and it's better than any compression technique ever.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm not OP BTW.

because, the human eye can't see more than 1 md5 cycle per year

How is it better than compression when the file size of the hash is bigger than the data itself?
>>60046336
Uh sweetie you mustn't have torrented anything before. The hash file is far smaller than the actual file.

Youre even worse than the "EGGSECUTIVE LOONIX" poster

Yes something like this would be awesome and is totally within the realm of possibility.
The problem with using bittorrent for this is that you need to have a tracker.
bittorrent sync (which has since been renamed) is great for this but only on machines you control
if you want to have a globally accessible, decentralized, fully encrypted and secure universal filesystem share look into ipfs: https://ipfs.io
don't get your hopes up though it's still got a LONG ways to go and might end up being just a pump+dump sv startup meme
as long as capitalism exists file sharing will not be easy

Because a hash has a many files to one hash relation. Now, What would be nice to have is enough redundancy in the downloaded torrent such that we could repair partially downloaded files.
