I am looking for a youtube channel I saw on /g/ a few months ago in /spg/

It was just this autist with a monotone voice taking apart new phones/tablets and then trying to put them back together afterwards but usually he would just take them completely apart while talking about the components.

>>
Okay boys, need help. Canadian here.

I'm on Rogers. Don't do much special with my phone. Take pictures, watch videos, listen to music, browse the internet, social media, email, etc.

I can get a G6 for $180, an S8 for $250, an S8+ for $320 or a Google Pixel XL 128GB for $480.

These are just the regular prices, and I intend on waiting for a sale on whichever one I choose, but they'll still be discounted the same, so the differences in the base prices are really the most important.

What do you guys think I should do? I'm weary of bootloops on the G6, weary of hardware failure, TouchWiz and Bixby autism on the S8/S8+, and I'm not sure the Pixel is the best value compared to the others.

The Pixel's hardware and software don't worry me in the slightest, it's just that it's pretty expensive compared to the others. If I wait for a sale I'll be able to afford it for sure, but then the sale prices for the others will be even cheaper...

Ideas?

Reposting from last thread for those who are curious about the S8/S8+
This is coming from an iPhone btw
Pros:
>That fucking screen
>camera is just right
>speedy, no stutters (yet)
>great for multimedia
>very fast wifi/cellular
>Face/Iris works well even if there's some sun directly on it
>RAM usage is good
>great battery

Minor gripes:
>fingerprint sensor, but it's actually pretty decent if you're a big guy
>no dual cameras, but those are kinda of a meme
>edge screen can sometimes take a couple of attempts to bring up
>samsung software (not lag, but minor regionalized things)

Cons:
>gyroscope for potrait/landscape is a bit oversensitive
>a bit taller than I would like
>No, i don't want bixby, I want to change the volume
>>
>>60041660
I got a HTC One M9 with 2 year contract through sprint for $1.00

no Im not leasing the phone, it was one of the last 2 year contract phones available before this leasing bullshit all providers use. I got pretty lucky.

This.

My dad has a corporate deal/offer from his job, so we get a discount on a sharing plan (it's a Rogers Share Everything plan, to be specific). Because of this, we not only get a good plan on a reliable, big carrier's network for relatively cheap, but we also get a shitload off of the phones for being on what is otherwise an astronomical plan (regular by Canadian standards). We also pay get a larger discount with each person that joins, so when I switch onto the plan we should get an even larger discount.

Basically, I'm lucky as fuck.

I recently found an iPhone 7.
I have an S8 so didn't think much of it and besides checking with my building's security haven't taken too many steps to return it.
I tried to do a factory reset so I can have it as a spare and now I am stuck on the iCloud activation lock screen. Is there any bypass to this?

I honestly didn't even realise this was an anti-theft protection.
I definetly didn't steal it and the police in my country won't take the phone all they'll do is report the IMEI and your contact information.
I have had my phone stolen before so wouldn't be passing on negative ju-ju if I could help it
>>
>>60041976
Just give it back to security. Unless my knowledge is outdated, iCloud activation is nearly impossible to get around without switching out the motherboard. Even so, if iCloud doesn't fuck you over, a IMEI carrier blacklist (which will mark the phone as stolen and prevent it from connecting to just any carrier) can and will.

Is there any apps/content that takes advantage of the HDR and/or neat resolution the S8 has?
>>
>>60042061
Yeah might just give to security to hang onto. I found it on a park bench that makes kind of a courtyard with four other blocks so not certain it is someone in my buildings
>>
>>60042062
Pirate some wide screen [>2:1 aspect ratio] movies.

HDR content is pretty slim pickings afaik. I mean, you could find some 10bit movies/shows online (10bit is most commonly found in anime).

In terms of actual, proper 10bit content, you're stuck with 4K/UHD BD rips, if you can find and fit one on your phone.

1440p media isn't really a thing, so you'll have to hope 4K will playback on there.

tl;dr Wait for Netflix/Amazon to update their apps to support HDR, it'll be difficult to find any real HDR content on torrents.
>>
>>60041975
Wow, same here basically.
>>
>>60042088
Yeah, the only method I know of is so expensive and difficult that you might as well just buy a new back up phone if you're that bothered about having one.

Phones aren't really hard to find tho, at least not to bother having a back up for. If you ever need a quick, cheap replacement, you can never go wrong with a Moto G.

My deal is through No Wires Direct. Yours?

I'm about to switch over from """"unlimited"""" $35 on Wind/Freedom. I would stay if they had better coverage. I live out in the sticks, about 20 minutes outside of a fairly large town. Wind told us they bought a plot and were expanding the network up to us nearly 5 years ago-- still nothing. I doubt they'll ever expand on their old network now they have their newer one, and only a small handful of phones work on it anyways, so I'm probably gonna give up my grandfathered """unlimited""" for Rogers.

Do you think I should keep the Wind plan? I get by just fine with it, it's just that it's kind of shitty value to pay $35 for what's essentially unlimited talk/text with 5GB data (they slow it after 5GB, plus I never use that much anyways) on a shitty network that doesn't even cover my house/neighborhood when I could pay about $60 for unlimited talk/text with maybe 3/4GB of data on the much better Rogers network that actually covers my house.
>>
>>60042267

(In regards to aicp on the zuk z2)
Awesome. This is all working *nearly* perfect. After messing around for an hour or so, my only complaints are the utouch button does not work with gestures anymore(liked sliding right/left to change the active app. The option is in the settings, but it does not work) and the phone can't mount as removable storage, only as a media device. Dunno why android does this, but it annoys me since you can't play files off the phones memory on the PC(it instead loads it into a temp folder on the PC first) and file transfers take like 4x longer.

Moto G4 (2gb RAM, 16gb) with 165€ or Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro (3gb RAM, 32gb) with 230€? Is the extra 65€ worth it?

I've had it for about 1.5 years, and now it's started having issues with rebooting when it gets overwhelmed, shitty battery life, can't connect to Wi-fi anymore, and screen flickering.
I've heard it's an issue with the soldering on the mobo so i'm going to try to apply thermal paste on the CPU, and Wi-fi chip to squeeze more time out of it

That's MTP. You can browse the files on your phone but it's slow. Transfers are slow too. Is there a single music player on Android that can compare to the original iPod touch interface? Everything I've come across is either bloated botnet shit that tries to do too much with a cluttered interface, or often buggy open-source apps that can't do enough. I currently have Vanilla Music on my Moto G4, since it was the most functional lightweight player I could find and had the fewest bugs. I would want something like that but with a more refined interface that includes the ability to sort stuff alphabetically. For the time being I still use the same iPod I had in high school 8 years ago.

>>60045094
They probably switched to it because of retards who fucked up their phones by unplugging them without first ejecting them. My sister had this complaint about her Galaxy S2 ages ago, said the phone was "fucked" and used it as an excuse to buy an iPhone 6. I found out the reason why it was acting wonky was because she just yanked the cord out of her computer whenever the phone was mounted. I took over it, installed CM 11 and it was perfectly fine for another 2 years. Google had people like my sister in mind when they decided to move to MTP.

All the networks are shit. Bell used to have dead zones near my house literally smack in the middle of London (off Oxford St. W) because there were no tower blocks nearby where they could build cell infrastructure cheaply. I switched to Telus and while the reception was better I would still run into random dead zones. In a city of 380,000 people, neither Bell nor Telus can keep their shit working. I went to visit friends in Waterloo and the same sort of shit happens there too. Haven't been to Toronto in a while but I imagine the story is much the same.

I could see an excuse for this in rural areas but not in two of the 10 largest cities in the country.

Only patches so far for it is using wake lock app. But at $160 for the price I paid for my note 4 coming in, idk if i should take the risk and use it or sell/ trade it when it comes in for a different phone. I never heard those problems from the note 3

Even if you're able to do so, "ripping" single parts of it it won't make much sense. And ripping the whole code will cause you trouble, yeah.

Success of an app is not about the code itself. It's about the idea, design, usability, UX, and how those pieces "work" together. Writing the code itself is the easiest part, actually.

Looking to replace my OPO, yes, the original one.
Willing to spent about $180-250, should have a good camera and custom rom support (def. planning on replacing the botnet OS it comes with, if it's not stock android). Android 7.0 support would be nice.

Get the fuck outta here) and don't come with a notification LED whereas your moto G and even the most basic sony phone does.

Don't overpay, the Z3C should be around 220-270 dollars new, the Z5C is dogshit because it shipped with the housefire 810 and the XC is just a 150 dollars chinese phone in a 4.6" body sold for almost 500 dollars, and for some stupid reason it has a glass back and isn't waterproof like the Z3C.

Redmeme

+ Best bang for your buck phone, it sometimes goes for as low as 130 dollars
+ Lots of third party support
+ SD650 on par with SD810 with none of the problems of the SD810
+- Most custom roms break fingerprint scanner completely unless you flash some other zip on top of your rom, freetards consider this a plus
- Chinese botnet, can be easily removed though
- Shittiest camera ever, records in 1080p
- Black borders around the screen
-Some chinkshit importers say the earphone jack broke after a few months of use

Lelnovo

+ Cheap
+ YUGE battery
+- SD625 may not be as powerful as the SD650 but it's more battery efficient
+ 4GB of ram
+ 4k recording
- Shit build quality typical of lenovo
- Shit software and no third party support outside of like 2 curry roms full of bugs
-Pajeet says it overheats

X Compact is plastic, but you're right it isn't waterproof. Still, it is more powerful than the Z3C and will get an official Nougat update. Z3C is old and the SoC doesn't have official drivers for Nougat so it won't be getting an official version, you'll have to rely on dodgy XDA ROMs, and even then you'll be sacrificing camera quality since unlocking the bootloader removes DRM required for optimal camera function especially in low light.

>>60056092
Is it blacklisted? If a phone is listed as lost or stolen it goes on a Canada wide blacklist and won't work with any carrier. Try entering your IMEI on this website:
https://www.devicecheck.ca/check-status-device-canada/

If it's blacklisted there's really nothing you can do besides use it as a wifi-only device.

W10 largely solved a lot of the issues facing functionality of big-name apps like Weather Channel or Facebook Messenger, as well as the most glaring flaw of Microsoft's own apps/services (Skype/GroupMe, Outlook, you name it) being monumentally WORSE on their own platform than on iOS or Android.

It did not however, fix the "lol no apps" issue from the inception. You won't have your banking app or the bus station app for anything of that sort

How much does encryption affect battery life?
>>
>>60058102

Oh okay, good to know. Shows how much I know about Apple phones.
Damn, tough decision.
I like the battery life of the SE. I plan on doing a lot of hiking & camping soon and the 1600mah battery can be recharged many times w/ a power bank.
I like the unofficial water resistance and 2-stage camera shutter button of the X compact.

The metal body of the SE feels awesome and the X compact doesn't feel that special at all. But the SE screen seems a bit small. I'm used to a 4.6" screen. SE screen does look great though. X Compact screen is also great. I think it gets a little bit brighter in sunlight though, which is important to me as I take a lot of photos outside.

Some people say iPhones last a long time with Apple's updates, while some others say that Apple does some planned obsolesence shit with their updates to older phones.

I like to keep my phones as long as possible so this stuff matters to me. I have an old LG Optimus F6 which only has 1gb internal storage and a pretty shitty camera...but with root, careful app management and deletion of everything unnecessary it actually runs pretty well for everything I do.

I just want an upgrade for the better camera, better battery life, and to get off Jelly Bean and onto something current.

No chink phone is even going to be close. The difference between "decent" and "really good" cameras in phones is astronomical. Low-light performance is really really hard to do and companies like Samsung and Google have it by the balls in the software department.

Anyone running a Le Meme 2? If so, what ROM are you using? All of the custom ones I see are laggy or have some kind of problems, and the official EUI is shit to use.
>>
>>60059647
The G5+ has better camera, fingerprint gestures (letting you do away with onscreen buttons and enjoy those 5 inches of screen), much better build quality and screen, OTA software and security updates (if the G4+ is anything to go by you'll get security updates for nearly 4 years, all the nougat updates and a buggy android O that drains the battery much quicker) and moto gestures like doing a chop motion for the flashlight, twisting for camera etc.

Both ARE chinkphones, but lenovorola is fucking everywhere so there's no need to worry about bands and warranty and even if motorola dropped the ball pretty hard in the past 3 years their G phones are still reliable.

Get the redmeme only if you're willing to put up with chinese botnet for at least a year or until pajeet, ahmed and gregor get to making stable official builds of lineageOS for it.

Just got the S8+ the other day and while I don't hate it, I really can't get comfortable with it. It has pros and cons but I feel like an $800 phone should feel better than this. I used an HTC one m9 before this and loved it but wanted to splurge and get something new. Is the HTC U Ultra really that bad?
>>
>>60066224
Honestly if you want a good HTC device just get the 10, seeing as it's probably pretty cheap now. I honestly believe it to be the best phone they have ever made.

The U Ultra is a step back, in that it's apparently fragile as hell, no waterproofing, relies too hard on the second screen meme that LG tried, and costs almost $800. HTC keeps making expensive ass phones that few people buy, then immediately wonder why everyone bought the iPhone, Galaxy, or OnePlus instead. The difference here being whereas the HTC10 was actually a good phone that suffered from being overpriced the U Ultra is just there seeing as it actually pales to its competition even without price as a factor

I wound't buy a 2GB/16GB phone in 2017. That's so last year.

I also think 230 EUR for a Redmeme Note 3 is way too much. I bought the Redmi 4 Prime 5" (wanted smaller manlet phone now that summer is coming and I won't have jacket pockets to put the phone in) for $149 a month ago, got it last week. I wouldn't pay the extra 65 EUR for the RN3P for the simple reason that you should be able to get one for 165 EUR or less if you really want that phone. Look around for better deals. The RN3P is rather old and outdated anyway, so either buy it a lot cheaper or get something newer.

Four out of eight S8's have broken screens but that's supposedly alright because you can manually adjust the settings so it doesn't look that broken?

Please. Samsung's phone division is bankrupt and finished. Luckily for Samsung that's actually (I know many are not aware of this) just a very tiny part of that rather gigantic corporation.
>>
>>60061563
Isn't that the Samsung GIO? I'm fairly sure it is and if I'm right I've got one a box somewhere.

If I remember correctly it's a single core 900MHz with 384MB RAM or something along those lines. And I wouldn't call it a piece of shit, it was actually a very nice phone when I got it.
>>
>>60065994
Yes, yes it is bullshit.

>>60066221
>>60066283
I am actually not sure what I could do to be honest. Because the way they said it would imply that you could send in a phone purchased from a non-official outlet for warranty repair if you were American, but not if you were Canadian. Because refusing to perform warranty work on any phone that was not purchased from an official Sony shop would be Apple-tier levels of draconian bullshit.

I do have old high school buddies who went to university in the US but I don't trust them entirely. I shouldn't even be subjected to this bullshit. I bought a Seiko watch from a gray market importer for $400 CAD and when it started developing issues, Seiko Canada honored the warranty on a watch that was never supposed to be sold outside of Japan, ie half a world away. Why this other Jap company can't do the same for a phone that was sold literally less than a hundred miles from where I live is beyond me.

First phone I bought unlocked. Paid $300 Canadabux for it in September 2015.

I felt it was a little overpriced compared to a similar Android phone, but the build quality is good, battery life is insane and it still gets OS updates. Also native FLAC support. The processor and screen are underwhelming at best but overall I've been pleased with it. It's a good phone for people who just need a phone - the lack of native BBOS apps and the extremely shit performance of sideloaded Android apps are both frustrating for when you want to do something more with it.
