There are other systems like openrc and runit, that way all processes run standalone and aren't controlled through the giant monster that systemd has become. Gentoo offers a nice systemd-free experience if you want it..

Yes! SysteMD was initially just an init system but it kept swallowing other components. This hasn't done anything to SystemD users because they're not autists, but I'm planning to use OpenRC myself.
