Give an argument for linux without resorting to conspiracy theories about evil corporations like microsoft. Top tip: you can't.
>>
well it is good to have an alternative
>>
Linux is objectively better than Windows in every way except program compatibility, which has nothing to do with quality of OS.

Linux has objectively better file systems, objectively better performance, objectively better security, objectively better package management, the list could go on and on.
>>
Linux does not have to prove itself. You don't need N amount of arguments or reasons to use Linux.

Even "Linux as an alternative" is a sham, because it implies that Windows is the norm and Linux somehow needs to have good or even better reasons to use it.
>>

>except program compatibility
So it's better in every way except the way that matters most?
>>
>>60032020
Every Windows machine I have had has ended up grinding and slowing down at weird times because MS policy is to preload stuff to make the machine faster at some point in the future. Instability is another problem.

Macs look better than Linux but run slower on comparable hardware.
>>
>>60032020
>Conspiracy theories
You act as Snowden and Wikileaks don't exist.
>>
>>60032020
Using Linux on a daily basis will make you better suited to deal with Linux in a professional setting. Big companies pay big money for Linux and they need people with competence in Linux.

If you never pan on working with IT or tech, then fine, this argument doesn't apply to you.
>>
>>60032145
Like, how further away can you possibly get from a conspiracy theory than to have someone working for the NSA leak information and tell you what they're capable of?
>>
I like Windows and I like Linux. Linux is better for surfing the internet. You can go to a porn site and roll your face on the keyboard and you won't get any viruses. That's what I do on computers and when I used Windows I always got something
>>
>>60032163
The conspiracy is pretending that Snowden and Wikileaks aren't just russian ruses to make Russia seem more technologically advanced and threatening than they really are.
>>
It's free. It's private. It's secure. You have full control over it.

Good luck proving any of that.
>>
>>60032200
There is proof already, both the CIA and FBI have announced that Wikileaks is selectively releasing anti-US pro-Russia documents.

Snowden is given Russian asylum. Imagine what would happen to him if he spoke critically of the Russians, considering how Putin and his gang actively make journalists and reporters and political dissidents disappear or killed.

>Give an argument for linux
It has plenty of advantages compared to desktop-oriented OS.
It's light, better suited for a single purpose, not as complex which makes it much easier to completely set up and control.
It's also free, which makes it a great VM material.

If you're running a server and have necessary skills and knowledge, basing that server on a Unix distro (especially on stuff like FreeBSD) is objectively better than using, say, Windows Server for it. However, the latter is, obviously, much more efficient in terms of result/time+effort.

Linux distros are pretty shit as desktop machines, but the GUI they get is enough to make them viable dev machines. I still would prefer to run something like WSL for Unix software (RoR in my case) and Windows for the GUI, but were I to be required to use some functionality WSL doesn't yet have, I would rather spend some time learning the GUI of some mainstream Unix distro instead of going bac to Mac. Fuck Macs. They are better desktop machines than Linux, but that's not an achievement.

Linux lets you customize your computer to fit your needs much better than windows. The initial learning curve is steeper, but once you've mastered it you get a fully personalized experience.

And to expand on that, the notion that Russians are even remotely competent to somehow tip the power balance in the US is utterly ridiculous. But manipulating the press by having the FBI and CIA come out and say that "they had some influence" makes them seem more powerful than they really are.

For crying out loud, their flagship hangar carrier is running on some diesel/coal hybrid fuel and frequently breaks down, whereas the US has had nuclear-powered carriers for ages.

Pic related, does this seem like someone who's able to hack the planet?

Claiming that the FBI and CIA didn't go out and say that Russians and Wikileaks collaborated and that the media completely blew this out of proportions is just fucking ridiculous. Did you live under a rock the last year?

If you read any Russian history, that's basically how Russia has been for a long, long time.

Shit nation, shit military, shit economy, shit life, with an uncanny proficiency in espionage and long cons.
>>
>>60032020
Is it really a conspiracy when it's written right in to the EULA that they're logging everything you do?
>>
>>60032322
>with an uncanny proficiency in espionage
I honestly believe that their proficiency is because their opponents are outright incompetent. Soviet's espionage tactics weren't exactly cunning in anyway, they would go a long way by just having some hot chick hook up with their target and rely on pillow talk.

If you look at recent intelligence scandals, with the Secret Service for example, it's all about human incompetence. They would get drunk and blabber off to literal prostitutes.

>I thought linux users were supposed to be good with computers?

Maybe in 2004. I unironically believe Linux has been easier to use than Windows since 2010 or so

I also believe MOST of the Linux guys you see on /g/ aren't as "good" with computers as your typical hardcore PC gamer

i wouldn't be as good with computers now if I didn't get so much malware as a kid and have so much other shit go wrong with windows all the time
