I learned alt+d a long time ago. It's super convenient but some websites don't let it work, or flash or something. I don't know - I've encountered circumstances where it didn't work and I was super pissed.

ctrl+shift+escape opens task manager directly instead of that intermediary screen.
In all web browsers you can middle click a tab to close it, and middle click a link to open that link in a new tab.
In windows you can middle click a program on the taskbar to open an additional instance of that program

In windows 8 the usual point and click path to system information has changed but on every version of windows you can press win+pause/break to pull it up.

clicking on a link with your mousewheel (middle button) opens it in a new tab
clicking anywhere in a tab with middle button closes the tab, so you don't have to click that tiny X
