Can someone explain to me why everyone and their dog is talking about AI right now?
Because employers eventually want to replace all people with computers.

Haven't we done that already.
>>60018624
because people are dumb and look forward to scifi apocalypse

fuck off, musk
Because the previous tech meme aka VR already failed so you need the NEXT BIG THING to fill a bunch of mindless media outlets about things normies cannot understand
Throw buzzwords left and right and you have enough articles for the following years until the next tech meme

Because she's addictive.
Burning desire to make Tay real

>mindless meme spouting bot
We already have that. It's called /pol/. Though calling it "intelligence" would be some laughable marketing BS.
Because they don't know neighbor ask about AGI

Something I missed about AI recently? Aren't they still the same statistical tunner than always? Have they acomplished anything recently that I don't know?
>>60018624
Because AI is going to take everyone's jobs, with the exception of a few groups of specialists, most notably those working on making better AI.

No. Shit takes time.

This.
The industry needs something to jerk off about. Every few years there's THE NEXT BIG THING which turns out to be pretty boring.
Now that the web is boring because everyone has been assimilated by the Borg. Concurrency did not bring the technological singularity. The "internet of things" turned out to be DOA. Enhanced virtual reality was not what people wanted (apart from a few gaymers). Big Data turned out to be interesting for a very small set of problems.
We needed something different.
Something that isn't too difficult, but difficult enough to attract the geeks and overachievers.
Basically it's a marketing thing:
You attract good programmers by feeding them some delicious memes and in no time they are your senior devs bringing you some good money. And who knows? Maybe you can even hoax some customers with that shit and sell them your shit - or at least make them believe you are a high class company because you spend your time with pointless science shit instead of good old software engineering.

Underrated.
