Help /g/urus! I need to get a VPN, but I dont know which are best. I'm willing to spend a little bit of money, but I need high speed downloads to remain consistent. Any help is appreciated.
>>
Rent a dedicated server, install OpenVPN.
>>
I use PIA. It's been awesome so far and it's pretty reasonably priced.
>>
One argument is no VPN can be trusted because how to make certain they're telling the truth when they're salling their service. So you have to do what >>60018398 says.

Another would be to just avoid the 15 eyes, or how many they're up to, based services that don't use third parties to track on their sites and you're golden.

A third would be what do you need it for? Just pay for Netflix faggot
>>
>>60018377

why

I'm pretty sure VPNs are like modern snakeoil

All great comments, but heres the deal. I pay for netflix, i live in canada but dont care to change my ip. I dont care for american netflix. I download movies,tv shows and games and keep getting "notice of notice" emails from shaw, my ISP. They seem to be coming in more, and more frequently despite my declining downloading. So i want to protect my internet anonymity.
>>
I live in the second world country called Germany, where even single users get fined hundreds of europoors for downloading movies. If I have a VPN can I safely torrent or is it still a problem?
>>
>>60019099
OpenVPN, but TunnelBear is good for a single computer if you're willing to pay a little bit to go over the 200MB cap.
>>
>>60019153
i download lots of movies, so i would definitely be going over 200 mb, well into the hundreds of gigs. I think Linus tech tips recommended tunnel bear. ill have to give er a google.
>>
>>60018377
I use nord vpn to get on reddit with the dorm wifi

I like pia.

Just get pia. Its cheap and fast. I use it for torrenting

The illusion of privacy
>>
>>60019183
lol dorm wifi restricts reddit? that's stupid.
>>
Anyone know something about this trust.zone VPN that extratorrent recommends?
>>
>>60019572
Yeah. 40 bucks a year and it always comes in handy. Use it on the work wifi and browse pol on my phone. Use it to evade ip to watch a girl i know cam whore. Torrent and never get letter. Evade region blocks whenever i want. Be warned the ips for pia are banned on 4chan. I use a 4chan pass and that allows banned vpns to post

The only thing i need privacy for is downloading movies. I could care less if they know what porn i watch. I realize region locks are a big deal for some people, but i just want movies/tv shows.
>>
>>60019733
Then just get whats ever is cheapest and has good speed. Any vpn will obviscate your ip while downloading a torrent. Pia is pretty cheap and fast though. I wouldnt buy something outside of the US because it will just be slower

the only problem with pia that i can see, is that it doesnt have a free trial. I cant compare it to tunnel bear, which was incredibly fast as far as i could see.

VPN'S DO NOT PROVIDE PRIVACY

Would it not be more accurate to say that because you cannot be certain a VPN provides the privacy they claim, you have to assume they don't

They do if you are in control of the VPN-server.

OVPN. You can choose whether you want to route your traffic via Sweden, Germany, Canada or the Netherlands. They will even tell you if you're leaking info via WebRTC.

Throwing in with PIA as well.

Has clients for Mac OS, Android, Windows, and Ubuntu (and others I'm sure but I don't use those), and I use all 4. Shitposting is fast and easy and download speeds don't seem to be effected so much as long as you choose a location relatively close.
>>
>>60018536
An EFF guy said that using a VPN was moving your trust from your ISP to your VPN. I don't have much to add.

UPDATE: so I subscribed to pia, but it seems my torrents are limited to about 1.2mB/s (total). The server is set to automatic, and is routing through Chicago. Any suggestions?
>>
I use Private Internet Access. Even though they're based in the US and that's a big No-No for many, they have a strict no-logging policy and it's been tested in court, where they couldn't hand over any info when legally required to because they didn't have it.

https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-providers-no-logging-claims-tested-in-fbi-case-160312/

Even after I became a customer of theirs, I got quite a bit more respect for them for running full page ads against S.J Res 34 and standing up for privacy.

So use Private Internet Access.
>>
>>60024393
Just curious, what server do you use and what speeds do you get on your downloads?
>>
If you're using PIA you need to replace the OpenVPN driver they provide (tap0901.sys along with the digital signature file tap0901.cat) because they use a version that limits throughput. Get this one from OpenVPN directly:

http://build.openvpn.net/downloads/releases/tap-windows-9.9.2_3.exe

and install it, then go into the TAP-Windows folder (assuming you're using Windows, that is, as this is only an issue with the Windows client), find the two necessary files that were just installed by the OpenVPN installer (tap0901.sys and tap0901.cat) and copy them (do not move or delete) to the pia_manager folder overwriting the files the PIA installer put in place.

Do that and you'll get the max speed PIA is capable of, don't do it and your speeds will be shit regardless of what torrent you're connecting to or how many seeders it has.

Learned this the hard way and found the solution and it works, but without this fix PIA just isn't worth it on Windows because their default installer still uses an older version of the TAP driver that caps the bandwidth for some reason.

>>60018408
>PIA
this is a CIA coverfront though
Use the ones located in eastern europe: Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova etc. I'd look the ones located in Panama as well.

Mullvad. 5 euros a month, with no information needed at all to make an account.

It also doesn't keep logs (and they are very transparent on what they keep) and isn't in the 14 Eyes.

There is no privacy anymore, you fucking moron, no security, hasn't been for a decade plus now, so just pick one, they're all being monitored 24/7 by governmental agencies, every fucking bit of data on the Internet is sniffed and stored so even if you don't get spotted right now today that just means in a few years they'll come after you retroactively.

This. I trust VPNs more because they have more competition. ISPs have regional monopolies and don't give a fuck about screwing you over because they know you have no other options

I have transmission running in a jail on my freenas server behind pia. I get about 3MB/s download, which is my network bandwidth without the vpn. The only issue with the vpn is latency, so it's not as good for real time things like video chat or gaymen.

Tl dr some autistic neckbeard was sending bomb threats and harassing a coworker of his etc. He used PIA for some of the activity and the FBI subpoenaed PIA for the activity logs and they were unable to comply because they didn't have any info. All they told the FBI was what region of the country the alleged IP's came from.

I had PIA previously. When it came time to reup, I tried TunnelBear to see if it was better. I hated everything about it.

Try TB for free. If you don't like the interface or how well it works, get PIA. It's feature rich, has a very dull and simple interface (which I like), and it comes with a proxy as well. I usually just use my proxy when torrenting and a VPN for region locks.

Will any of them work on 4chan? I got no reasons to ban-evade, but it would be annoying to toggle it off to post.

tried tunnelbear- doesnt support torrent instakill
pia seems to be worth the money thus far

The main problem i have is connecting to torrents. they download fast but i have to connect without pia to get the torrent started...
