I need help with my desktop. I use Debian with cinnamon and there are following issues:
1)Sometimes when I log out my icons get displaced randomly. Application icons were set in 2 rows, after log out this is what I saw
2)Icons captions overlap with each other. See home, backup_important_2 and notes folder. How can I set value for text wrapping and value for truncating too long text?
3)Are desktop icons served by file manager? If so how I can check which is used e.g. Nemo our Nautilus
4)Any better alternatives? I want to get as much windows xp/windows 7 desktop usability as it is possible.

Thanks anon.
Ok, now I'm 99% sure that desktop is using Nemo. I was checking configuration in dconf and changing following entries changed desktop look
org.nemo.desktop.text-ellipsis-limit
If text in icon is too long it will wrap the text n times. Still that is not what I want because text is still overlapping. I can just change how many rows will overlap. I still can't change the characters number in caption.
org.nemo.desktop.show-desktop-icons
self explenatory - unticking it hides icons. Thanks to that I found out that I use nemo. I just hope this value isn't shared with other apps because it would mean that other file manager might be used.
Editing /usr/share/applications and changing value of inode/directory did not helped to change default file manager. Other methods like .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list didn't helped either. I was studying linux gui architecture for the last few hours and I still don't know what to do. It's either unfixable or I should I try reinstall debian without gui and install every part manually. First xorg then some window manager like Muffin (default for Cinnamon).
But for now I give up.
