How do you fämälämäzoids brew your coffee?

Is grinding your own beans worth it?

Aeropress & manual coffee grinder. I used to use a french press, nothing wrong with those either.

Different beans need to be ground finer or rougher, brewed for different lengths of time, and require different grind-to-water ratios.

I'm not a coffee snob but I find experimenting to be enjoyable, and it is tastier.

My setup is so non-electric hat it is hardly very /g/, heck I even often use an old-fashioned fire-based oven to heat it (during winter, since the oven helps keep the house warm)

manual coffee grinder + bialetti moka pot or whatever the correct expression is in english. I've two, the 3 cup one and the 6 cup one

my usual way of actually drinking it
-either like "espresso shots"
-or with some added hot water to get an "americano" (most common) (sometimes I add a little bit of fernet branca for a nice alcoholic coffee beverage)
-or sometimes I make ghetto "latte"s (I use a french press like this to generate foam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icjkLDaPH6Q )

good thing about my way: good coffee, cheap equipment, the bialetti pots are really fucking good-looking, some of the few chicken appliances I don't want to hide from sight

bad thing: kinda needs a lot of effort to generate a small amount of drink but I don't mind, I usually drink more tea and maybe a serving of coffee a day. sometimes I buy ground coffee if I'm not feeling like grindin' and there's some fresh quality ground coffee in the shop

out of a keurig.

I actually work for a coffee company, and grind about 80,000 lbs of coffee every time I work.
So in a sense I grind my own beans, but long before they get packaged into kcups and delivered to my door.

still tastes pretty damn fresh out of a kcup. its not the worlds best cup of coffee but some of the kcups i would say are in the top 10 percentile of good tasting cups of coffee.
critics might say its underextracted and they're probably right, but It tastes right to me.

I can say after working at a coffee company for 5+ years and getting elbow deep in fresh grounds on a daily basis, I'm still not sick of drinking coffee.

>>
I just bought a french press. Is it true that coffee goes stale a week after roasting?
>>
>>60005747
nah...
>>
>>60005747
stale is objective
the coffee loses a lot of gasses within the first 48 hours after roasting. grinding also releases a lot of gasses. If you consider coffee that has completely degassed to be stale, then yeah that shit is stale

most people don't consider degassed coffee to be stale, but it definitely loses something.

Day-job barista here, grinding your own coffee is great if you want to get some extra liveliness out of your cup. If you want the quick-and-dirty on the cheap, just get some nice pre-ground stuffs. I'll always advocate for something a little nicer.

Turks got it from Africa, Ethiopia in particular if my memory serves me. Then Turkey, then Italy, then the rest of Europe, etc.

Moka pots are great, although I've never had luck myself. Strong stuff, but no need to get anything really high quality, since it's an imprecise brew method imo.

I bought a a $10 walmart blade grinder, I'm happy with it.
What I don't understand is why manual burr grinders are so damn expensive, when it's a literal quality of life downgrade. The bare limit is $60 if you want one that isn't full of plastic parts that rattle and deposit literal metal shrapnel into your coffee as the burr grinder mechanism literally grinds itself to bits.

My regular mug is 16 fl. oz, I'd need 20g of coffee and it would take probably 10 minutes of hard grinding every fucking day, why do people even bother?

the question of the beans is really this:
are you willing to either grind by hand or spend some actual money on a proper electric grinder?

good hand models can be cheap, but it is really quite bothersome if you don't like to get that involved. I grind by hand but I do it only because I like that kind of manual activity

but good electric grinders, won't you have to drop more than, like, 100 moneys on one no matter what. at that point you really need to look at your whole setup, what level of coffee you're willing to buy, etc. grinding makes a difference but the difference is smaller than what you get from the rest of the process + the choice of coffee itself. you should definitely experiment a little before going grindin', try out a moka pot, try out a french press, why not aeropress, etc...
>>
>>60008205
Don't lie.
You could replace the hand crank with a power drill and it would still take at least a minute of non-stop grinding to grind 4 cups worth.

Grind consistency is such an overblown meme, the easiest way to make non-shit coffee is to brew below boiling temperature.

americano is my choice for a basic, no-milk coffee, tho, and I use moka pot at home but I consider that "almost espresso" (not the same, but closer to espresso than drip coffee, french press etc)

straight espresso is good but I find myself mostly desiring it with/after meals (nice to have a small cup, can still drink something else with the food and then the espresso without feeling too full of it)

I use an Aeropress and a Java Presse grinder. The Aeropress is great. The Java Presse works fine, although it doesn't seem to be really well made so we'll see how it holds up.

Can anyone recommend some good beans from Amazon? I just got an Amazon giftcard and feel like buying something.

got one of these, takes 5 full minutes of grinding action every morning but i'd say it's still worth it. automatic grinders are expensive and i only have one coffee a day.
>>
I drank preground medium or light roast for years and always needed sugar and cream or creamer but recently started grinding dark roast and have been enjoying it black, especially if I cold brew. Though sometimes I'll add cream or sugar

I'm still using one of those cheap blade grinders and a cheap french press, I'd like to invest in a burr grinder and a pour over station for when I want a hot brewed cup.
>>

If it's different and not absurdly expensive then it could be worth it for the experience. If I was particularly wealthy I'd try black ivory coffee but $50 for pretty good/interesting coffee is beyond my limit.

It isn't absurdly expensive to try, you should be able to get 100g for under $50 and smaller amounts can be bought, but it'd be pretty expensive to drink all the time.

^ This.

I use an electrical one, I had it for 10 years, still working just fine. I wanted to use pre-grinded bags at first, but they almost blew up my shitty coffee machine.

Since these "beans-to-coffee" machines cost a fortune - if you want to buy a good one - I just opted for this version. It works fine.

It's also cheaper than bags.

I make your mom sit on my beans until they are ground properly
>>
>>60003473
IS this a fucking question?

Ground coffee is dried up shit

The oils and gases need to stay tucked inside that bean until ready for optimal flavor

Also don't buy shitty store shelf beans. They've been collecting dust.

Get your whole beans from a local roaster or coffee shop who gets their beans local. A $10 coffee mate will be a fine grinder.

Lastly, use a French press! Clean it after using immediately!

Granulated sugar is fine, it dissolves more readily than raw shit. I just use half and half.

NEVER put flavored beans in your machine.

I buy the 2 lb bags of Melitta medium roast Columbian beans, best price/quality option for me that I've found, tried a local roaster but wasn't crazy about the taste and they are much more expensive. Sometimes I get Kicking Horse since they're the only whole bean coffee the closest store to me sell, but they're also much more expensive and I drink a fair bit of coffee.

I buy my coffee beans from a local roaster who roasts coffee to order and ships it overnight to you so you get it literally the day after it was roasted.

I use a Barzata Virtuoso electric burr grinder

I use a Bonavita electric temperature controlled gooseneck kettle

I use an electronic scale

And I brew using a pour-over method using a Chemex with unbleached filters.

After having tried French press, Aeropress, Chemex using a metal filter, serious espresso machine, and moka pot, this is the approach I have settled on as yielding the best tasting results.
>>
>>60014338
you can get an electric grinder for literally the same price as a hand grinder. there is no excuse.
>>
>>60020506
$10 coffee mate grinder is shit. Burr mill is the only way to get a consistent grind size. Manual (hand crank) burr mill is about $15. Electric can be under $40.

Except for the minor problem that particle size is directly related to how long it takes to dissolve the desired soluble compounds from the coffee onto the water as a matter of grade school chemistry, and thus self evidently grind consistency is of paramount importance in getting coffee that extracts at a relatively uniform rate.

a lot of people in this thread have strange or objectively wrong ideas
a burr grinder is really important for a decent cup of coffee, think about it in terms of surface area: the more consistent your grind, the more homogenous each bit's size is, the more uniformly they're exposed to water and thus extracted in the same amount of time. more on why that matters here https://baristahustle.com/blogs/barista-hustle/coffee-extraction-and-how-to-taste-it
if you want to get into making good coffee, a feldgrind or lido 2/3 is the bare(ish) minimum for this (they far outclass electric grinders priced above them, as you aren't paying for housing/motor, and they both grind very fast), the low-tier hand grinders (skerton/minimill et al) really aren't worth it once you start caring
for brew methods, french press is pushed a lot because it's older and simple, but I think a clever dripper is the best entry point. as long as you can dose beans and water by weight and control water temperature, you can experiment a lot
in terms of beans you want to find something roasted within a matter of days (coffee offgasses and loses orders of magnitude of aromatic flavors within two weeks, and a fair degree within one) with the roast date printed, and something from a single farm/location (clearer definition/notes rather than muddled inoffensive flavor). there's probably a roaster with these near you if you live in a city, else you can order beans online, but again, try stuff at cafes to get a feel before you make the plunge and buy a pound of something you don't enjoy

coffee's neither a black box or all bullshit, it's mostly simple ideas and experimentation masked by a (kind of self-imposed) image problem, but most baristas and roasters are pretty into it and would explain whatever to you if you seem curious and ask
it's pretty fun too

it's a clever dripper, if you can't find one there's also the bonavita immersion dripper along the same lines
the idea is that it's both immersion, like a french press, and drip/percolation brewing. the bottom bit is detached from the top but connected by a plug which stays down because of gravity, so you put a filter and grounds in, fill it with water, and leave it for a bit, then put it on your cup or something which pushes the bottom part and thus plug up, and lets the coffee filter out
>>
>>60026127
>Unless you're making espresso, grind particle uniformity is a massive fucking meme
yeah nah cunt even french press and the like turn out far better when you've got a nice consistent grind instead of shit that's half gravel and half powder
