ubuntu is a big deal.

KDE is a bunch of wank. Bugs aplenty, very poor design that looks like it was an afterthought, their 'Discover' application is just nauseating to look at and most of their 'flagship' apps are half-baked.

GNOME isn't perfect but it's certainly the most polished compared to KDE.

>>
>>59998353
Gnome is polished because it's been the default on Red Hat distros forever. It's got a lot of support.

Current KDE plasma works very well. There are very few minor bugs in the current stable branch. If KDE gets adopted by Ubuntu it will get even more support and therefore even more polished.
>>
>>59998401
I like Unity's HUD intenterface.

Honestly, fuck menus in menus. They're a waste of time now.
>>
>>59998440
How about instead of waiting on Ubuntu's support to motivate KDE to improve, KDE improves in order to earn Ubuntu's support?

KDE double-confirmed as waitfag DE.
>>
>>59998440
The fact remains that it's not up to standard. Canonical have made some retarded decisions in the past but using KDE as their flagship DE isn't going to be one of them.

Remember, Ubuntu's target audience is normal, everyday users.
>>
>>59998401
yeah because it's a good desktop that works
>>
Im using KDE for last 2 weeks or so and i have to say its pretty nice, I havent experienced any problems whatsoever and has some neat features like KDE connect, just right click on any file i download and off it goes to tablet. It has loads of features with no fuss. Well it remains to be seen if updates wreck it
>>
>>59998169
Why are KDE shill so butthurt? LMAO

They are like sjws of linux community, seeking their validation while looking like clowns.
>>
No, no way. No way in hell. Gnome at least runs ok on my machine. No way I'm going to have a desktop environment where enabling Vsync makes a huge dent in performance
>>
>>59998472
>sjws of linux community
that would be the GNOMEfags
>>
>>59998452
How can it improve without support of the community?
Red Hat uses gnome -> everyone uses gnome -> gnome has community support -> gnome is polished

Nobody uses KDE -> it has little support -> it's not that polished
It's not about motivation, it's about manpower and advertising.

>>59998453
KDE is a lot more user friendly and intuitive out of the box
>>
KDE is shit for first time linux users.

GNOME is easy to use and sleaker than Windows.

Seriously my grandmother literally uses GNOME and has no problem. She'd blow her brains out if I tried to give her KDE.
>>
>>59998480
Im not talking about developers of gnome here. But the users and fanboys. KDE is shit clone of windows 7 and nobody actually use it for professional development. May be it is why it is famous with wanna be hipsters who were using ubuntu/unity before.

fucking faggots
>>

>Current KDE plasma works very well.

You can' make this shit up...
>>
>>59998498
>KDE is a lot more user friendly and intuitive out of the box
That's your opinion and it's not shared by a lot of people. KDE's settings are a clusterfuck, the 'Start' menu is utter wank and you can't change the theme without some third-party hacks.

Not good enough.
>>
>>59998512
I've never used KDE, personally I think it's shit, just as any bloated DE, yet I still think this should happen.
GNOME is an unusable piece of shit, it's even worse than unity and it needlessly depends on systemd.
It should not have the monopoly on Linux desktops.
>>
>>59998201
Because KDE Neon exists
>>
>>59998515
Settings are a clusterfuck, I agree. Though defaults are pretty sane.
You can download and install themes literally from the settings.
There are three options for the start menu, one of which is a clone of traditional windows like start menu. Ubuntu can just set that as the default.

>>59998513
When was the last time you tried it? It was buggy like a bit more than half a year ago.
Almost all bugs are fixed now. Just try KDE >=5.8 or even 5.7

There's another problem... the 'Get Hot New Stuff' feature has never worked right... it relies on kde-look.org which has no standards so any attempts to install the theme via KDE usually prompts you to download a tarball or something which is not user-friendly.
>>
>>59998474
you can run the latest version of gnome on an Atom.

and wayland(which will be there by default) is way more lightweight
>>
>>59998453
>Remember, Ubuntu's target audience is normal, everyday users.
You mean people who are used to using Windows, but they shouldn't be using the DE that's the most similar to what Windows looks like?
>>
>>59998667
If KDE was up to scratch then yes, I'd advocate that. Alas, it's not.
>>
>>59998337
FUG yes it is, I've tried it multiple times in the last year, I have to tell myself that it's ok - but I keep getting into bugs and it feels sluggish.

I really don't know what DE to stick with, never tried XFCE tho because I remember people always complaining how it stutters but maybe it's the time now?

And GNOME - I used it with fedora FELT FUCKING unique and fun but in the same time it was not fitting - because most stuff were non-intuitive and felt very limited + the general feel was of being on a tablet / phone rather than on my computer.
>>
>>59998667
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/02/ukui-linux-desktop-environment-ubuntu-kylin

Then use the Chinese version of ubuntu
>>
>>59998667
The problem is that KDE actually makes Windows look good. It looks like a cheap windows knockoff. It will leave a bad taste in peoples mouths.

GNOME looks modern and isn't hard to learn (literally all you have to do is press the activities button and everything else is self explanatory).

Plus GNOME has the gnome-software-center, which is the most user friendly way of installing software on Linux. No other distro has a software center as friendly as GNOMEs and this matters.

If you can't figure out GNOME you're too stupid to use computers, and most people are too stupid to use Windows properly.

Maybe people will unironically consider KDE the day it stops having a couple million switches with the most pants-on-head retarded defaults where getting things right and comfy is a next to impossible task.

There's a reason why, for most distros, KDE is at best an afterthought to please the few loud turboautismos that like it.

Unity
was
fine

It was old, they didn't put many features on it, it wasn't exactly the most customizable thing, but it worked just fucking fine. And it was the only one with a goddamn global menu that didn't crash or decide not to show menus for half of the programs.
>>
>>59998169
nobody cares about canonical's toddler OS
>>
>>59999316
It was based off Compiz which is pretty much abandonware nowadays.

The only reason the global menu worked is because Canonical had to patch damn-near every single program to work with Unity.
>>
>>59998969
>css and javascript for desktop
just lmao. also it's ugly.
>>
>>59999357

What is this 2008? They don't have to patch shit since every program nowadays exports menu to dbus.

everytime I used anything kde it was buggy as fuck (except for opensuse which was acceptable), I think it's my laptop but idk. Anyway now i use elementaryOS with pantheon and it's gorgeous and it's not as resource intensive as I thought. They should go with gnome and tweak it to look like unity. pic related looks horrid.

If you need DE to 'rice' your OS, then use it.
Ubuntu shouldn't be about 'ricing', 'mah customization' etc.
It's about install and use it.

lol

They didn't just pick GNOME out of a hat and go with it, there was likely a very lengthy discussion about which DE to switch to already and how each one would help or hurt development, a petition isn't going to change the developers minds if they've already chosen GNOME. The same thing happened with Debian, after a long internal debate they settled on GNOME as default, they even provided a chart detailing why they chose it compared to other DEs (I can't find it right now unfortunately).

They chose GNOME for a reason and they'd be stupid to stop just because of some stupid petition.

KDE is a mess. It looks nice and is configurable, but the menus are fucking insane with long, indecipherable descriptions that are a nightmare to navigate and find the options you want. Tweaking requires multiple menu locations and it's baffling. And it doesn't have a unifying user experience goal in mind, it's just a Windows clone with everything and the kitchen sink thrown in, and I don't fucking want most of it.

GNOME is the right choice. Well designed from the outset, with a very specific user experience in mind. Tweak tool is a concise, simple way to configure, including themes and extensions. Out of the box, GNOME comes with simple options that most users will need, and no extras.
